Bra and briefs "invisible"

Auch wenn man bislang nicht viel davon gesehen hat, ich habe doch im Januar auch ein bißchen Unterwäsche genäht. Vor allem langweilige, aber ich will wenigstens zeigen, daß ich was getan habe. :D

Genau, das sieht langweilig aus, ist es auch, aber so ist es gedacht, nämlich unauffällige Unterwäsche unter helle Sommerkleidung.

Der Stoff ist von Elingeria (und zwar aus einer Zeit, als sie noch creative Dessous hießen), die Farbe hieß "milchkaffee), der BH-Schnitt ist mein bewährter Schnitt "Sophie" (auch den gibt es bei Elingeria nicht mehr) und das Panty ist ein genauso bewährter Schnitt, den Natalie mal von einem ihrer Panties abgenommen hat und den ich mir dann noch ein bißchen für mich angepaßt habe.

Even though there wasn't anything to see, I did take part in the "Motivationsmonat" January and I've sewn a bit of underwear. Not very interesting one, but I want to show that I have done something.

Also "plain boring" was the idea behind it. It is still winter but I never give up the hope to see summer again and then clear summer clothes need underwear that is mostly not visible.

And for that the fabric in the colour "café au lait" from Elingeria (bought so long ago that it still was called "creative Dessous" then) is just perfect. The bra pattern is my often used pattern "Sophie" (also Elingeria, discontinued) and the panty also is one of the patterns I probably can sew up blindfold. (Natalie traced the pattern from one of her briefs and I adapted it to my size.)

Experimental Bra

Nachdem ich mich sessoustechnisch wieder "warmgenäht" hatte, war mal wieder der Zeitpunkt gekommen, was neues auzuprobieren. Von dem sehr weichen Jersey des Unterhemds war noch Stoff übrig, der natürlich genau nicht mehr für noch ein Hemdchen reichte.

Schnitt ist mein bereits bewährter "Marie" auch von "Kreative Dessous" (heute Elingeria) und auch nicht mehr im Angebot.

As I had some fabric from my camisole left but not enough for another camisole or tank, I decided to use it for a more experimental version of a bra. (Meaning an experiment with a high risk of going wrong.) The pattern is "Marie", discontinued at Elingeria. This is one of my tested and adapted pattern.

Zweierlei wollte ich probieren: Einmal ob es genügt, einen weichen Stoff mit sich selber zu doppeln, um ihn BH-tauglich zu machen (bisher kam in solchen Fällen immer eine Lage Powernet zum Einsatz) und wie das ganze aussieht, wenn ich das Unterkörbchen mit einer etwas brachialen Methode vergrößere.

There were two things I wanted to try: How would it be to increase the height of the lower cup? (And can that be done with a quite "brute force" method?) Is it true, that you can use a soft fabric for a bra, if you just use two layers of it? (I've used soft fabrics several times, but always with powernet as a second layer.)

Resultat: Das Unterkörbchen vergrößern ist ein guter Ansatz, allerdings war meine Methode etwas zu brachial, das sollte ich wohl doch etwas "kunstgerechter" machen.

Resultat zwei: Einen weichen Stoff mit sich selber doppeln mag bei Körbchengröße A oder kleiner noch gehen, bei einem wenn auch nur knappen C Cup hält das nicht mehr viel. Zum Rumlümmeln auf dem heimischen Sofa trägt sich der BH bequem, aber viel halten tut er nichts. Künftig also wieder Powernet.

The answers: Altering the lower cups isn't a bad idea, doing that "brute force" brings not the best results. And using two soft layers might work if your cups are A or smaller, not on a B/C cup. Next time will be powernet again. The bra wears very comfortable for a sunday afternoon on the couch, but nothing else.

Mantelzwischenfazit

Da ich dieses Jahr nichts mehr nähen werde, gibt es jetzt wenigstens mal einen Zwischenstand meines (November)Mantels:

Erst einmal etwas, auf das ich wirklich sehr stolz bin.

Ich habe in der Tasche eine schmale Paspel mitgefasst. Dazu habe ich zuerst meinen Paspelstreifen auf die Tasche genäht, mit langen Stichen und danach, damit die Paspel nicht schmaler wird, exakt eine Fadenbreite neben den langen Stichen die Taschenpatte auf den Mantel genäht.

Und das hat diesmal hundertprozentig funktioniert, nicht ein Stich ging daneben. (Ja, man sieht es auf dem Bild kaum, weil die Stiche wirklich ganz nahe beieinander sind.) Ich strebe das immer an, aber daß es so gut klappt ist selten. Dazu kam, daß ich nicht hätte auftrennen können, weil das Paspelmaterial Löcher behalten hätte...

First something I am really proud of.

I made a very fine (2mm) piping when sewing the flap to the coat. First I machine basted my piping with a longer stitch to the flap, then I had to sew the flap to the coat exactely one thread width away from the first stitching with smaller stitches.

And it worked! Not one single stitch went wrong. That's what I always try but rarely achive. (Yes, it is hardly visible on the pic because the stitches are so close.) Plus I couldn't have ripped any stitches, because the material of my piping keeps the holes of stitching...

Dann habe ich eine schnelle und einfache Lösung für ein weiteres Problem gefunden.

Wie markiere ich den Abnäher? Mit Nähfaden geht im Prinzip, ist aber aufwendig und bei meiner dicht gewebten und glatten Popeline gar nicht so einfach. Kreide hält nicht und ist kaum sichtbar und Trickmarker hat die Tendenz, etwas durchzufärben.

Die Lösung ist ganz einfach: Quilters Tape. Im Prinzip ist das ein schmales Kreppband wie aus dem Baumarkt. Da meine Brustabnäher in diesem Fall gerade sind, markiere ich Abnäherspitze und den Anfang des Abnähers und klebe den geraden Streifen des Klebebandes auf. Genau entlang nähen, dann wieder abziehen. Fertig.

Then I found a quick and easy solution for a problem:

How do I make the markings for the stiching line for my darts? Threadtracing is an option but time consuming and on my densly woven and a bit slippery popeline not the best one. Chalk does not last long enough even to finish the line and trickmarker bleeds through.

So I remembered the quilters tape I've had for some time in my notions stash and that is just perfect. My darts are straight, so I only had to fold the dart, mark beginning and end and put a straight piece of taper from one to the other. Then machinestitch along the tape, removing the tape and you're there!

Das ist also der Mantel bisher: Die rückwärtige Mittelnaht ist genäht, im Vorderteil sind Leistentaschen eingearbeitet, die Brustabnäher geschlossen und die Schulternähte sind genäht. Auch die Windstoppermembran ist schon mit eingearbeitet.

Damit konnte der Mantel auf einem Kleiderbügel verstaut werden, ein Moment, den ich immer sehr zu schätzen weiß. Ab da wirkt es doch wie ein Kleidungsstück. Und alles Kappnähte, die auch ganz ordentlich geworden sind.

Die Falten sind größtenteils auf mangelndes Bügeln zurückzuführen, allerdings läßt sich der Stoff mit dem hohen Polyesteranteil nicht gut bügeln und die Membran ist ebenfalls hitzeempfindlich. Da werde ich noch etwas Geduld brauchen. (Die restlichen Falten kommen leider von den Taschen, die habe ich nicht ganz kräuselfrei hinbekommen.)

This is the coat so far. Middle back is done (flat felled seam), pockets and darts in the fronts and the shoulder seams (again flat felled) are done. the windstop membrane is already assembled with the fabric.

I always love the moment when I can store it away on a hanger and not folded somwhere, because it gives me the feeling to have more a garment than just fabric.

The wrinkles you see are mostly due to poor ironing. My polyester fabric does not like to be ironed and the membrane is not very heat resistant either. So this will need some patience. (The rest of the wrinkles come from inserting the pocket. Evidently I did not get them in perfectly.)

Tut mir leid, daß das erste Bild etwas unscharf ist, denn ich habe es ohne Blitz gemacht.

Der Blitz verrät nämlich noch eine Besonderheit: Die Paspel, die ich an den Taschen eingesetzt habe, ist aus Reflexband. Das habe ich irgendwann mal bei Scherzkeks-Stoffe gekauft und es war noch was übrig. Da ich doch auch oft nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit unterwegs bin fand ich ein bißchen mehr Sicherheit ganz gut.

Obwohl wirklich nur 2mm breite Streifen des Bandes sichtbar sind, ist der Effekt doch mehr als deutlich...

Because the flash shows another special feature of the coat: The "piping" I inserted to the pockets is made from reflective material I purchased quite some time ago at Scherzkeks-Stoffe and had some of it left. I'm often outside when it's dark so I tought a bit more of security might be a good thing.

And even though the visible part of the piping isn't larger than 2mm the effect is more than visible...

Positiv ist die Bilanz an der Kleinteilefront.

Gürtel, Gürtelschlaufen und die Riemen für die Ärmel sind genäht, gewendet und zweimal abgesteppt. Wenn der Mantel also mal so weit ist, dann müssen sie nur noch angenäht werden.

Positive the view to the small parts: Belt, beltloops and the "belts" for the sleeves are sewn and topstiched (twice). So once the coat is nearly finished they will just have to be attached.

Bis ich so weit bin, müssen allerdings erst noch einige größere Teile verarbeitet werden.

Die Ärmel sind zusammengenäht (Kappnähte) und dabei die Membran mitgefasst. Ich will versuchen sie auch als Kappnähte zu arbeiten, im Buch Shirtmaking von David Coffin habe ich eine Technik dazu gefunden, die vielleicht auch an dem Mantel funktionieren könnte.

Kragen und Kragensteg sind jeweils zusammengenäht, wo bei der Kragensteg des Unterkragens auch Reflexband aufgenäht hat. (Die Idee ist, daß ich den Kragen hochschlagen kann und dann eben im Dunkeln das Reflexband sichtbar wird.

Die Belege sind immerhin mit Vlieseline bebügelt.

Before I can attach the small parts there are other bigger works to do.

The sleeves have one seam that is done (flat felled), the windstop-membrane is caught in that seam. I'll try to attach them to the coat with a flat felled seam, in David Coffins Shirtmaking I've found instructions that might also work with my coat.

The collarstands are sewn to the collars and as you can see on the pic I've used more from that reflective material. The stripes are on the stand of the undercollar and the idea is, that I can put up my collar when it's dark and the stripes appear.

About the facings there is nothing interesting to say, they are cut and the iron on interfacing is on.

Und das Futter... tja, das ist gekauft.

Den Rücken und den Unterärmel habe ich auch schon zugeschnitten, aber ich bin allmählich etwas knapp an Stecknadeln. Teilweise, weil in den anderen Teilen des Mantels noch recht viele drin stecken, die die Windstoppmembrane festhalten.

Das Fehlen der anderen verrät etwas über die Anzahl der Ufos bei mir, die auf die Fertigstellung warten... Meine Motivation im Januar wird wohl weiter "fertig nähen" sein.

The lining... well... I have it.

Back and one part of the sleeve are cut, too, but I'm running out of pins. Partially because there are quite a amount of them left in the already sewn part of the coat, to hold the windstop in place.

The other part of pins I can not use now tells a lot about the number of unfinished sewing projects I have here... My "Motivationsmonat" for January should be more finishing...

Frustrating buttonholes

Eines war schnell klar, mein Mantel sollte Paspelknopflöcher bekommen. Am Wochenende habe ich mich also dran gemacht. Ich mache nicht ständig welche, aber es ist auch nicht das erste Mal. Und ich habe auch eine Technik gefunden, mit der sie ganz gut gelingen.

Dachte ich bisher.

Ich habe sogar brav ein Probeknopfloch genäht, schon um die richtige Größe zu ermitteln. Das sah auch ganz gut aus. (Nicht ganz so schön wie in Wollstoffen, aber das konnte ja an meinem Stoff liegen. Baumwolle mit viel Poly läßt sich nicht so gut bügeln.)

Woraufhin ich die Knopflöcher am Vorderteil des Mantels genäht habe und sie alle versaubeutelt habe.

Jedes einzelne.

I had quickly decided to make bound buttonholes on my coat. So that was on my schedule for the weekend. I'm not making bound buttonholes everyday, but it wasn't the first time either. And I know a technique that works fine for me.

That's at least what I thought so far.

I made a test buttonhole to check the right size which also looked quite nice. (Not as nice as in woolen fabrics, but I thought this was due to the poly-cotton fabric, that does not iron so well.)

Then I took the front of my coat and made the buttonholes. Messing up all of them.

Every single one.

All four of them.

Na gut. Zwei Tage Denkpause. Vielleicht paßt meine Methode ja nicht zum Material.

Aber in der aktuellen Threads ist ja eine totsichere Methode zum perfekten Paspelknopfloch gezeigt. Die hat zwar viel Ähnlichkeit mit Methoden die schon früher nicht funktioniert haben. Aber einen Versuch ist es auf alle Fälle wert....

Tja, die Paspeln sind wunderschön gleichbreit und gut geformt.

Dummerweise überlappen sie sich aber im Knopfloch. Das war also auch nichts.

But the latest issue of Threads features another technique for perfect bound buttonholes. It reminds me a lot of techniques that have not worked for me in the past, but who knows...

Well the lips are well formed and of even width. Only they do not fit into the opening, they overlap... Back to square one.

Na gut, vielleicht Augenknopflöcher? Von Hand kann ich die auf dem Stoff definitiv nicht schön, aber meine Maschine macht das ja auch.

Wenn sie nicht immer diesen komischen Gradstich machen würde, bevor sie um die Kurve geht.

Okay, I give in. Maybe an eylet buttonhole? I'm sure that I do not master the technique of doing it by hand on this fabric, but my machine knows how to do that.

If it would not make this funny long stitch before starting the eyelet part...

Ich bin gerade ziemlich genervt...

Ich werde also ein Vorderteil neu zuschneiden (glücklicherweise habe ich so viel Stoff gekauft) und werde dann, wenn alles fertig ist, ganz normale Knopflöcher nähen. Es sei denn, die Janome von Frau mhs kann schönere Augeknopflöcher.

Aber diese Entscheidung eilt noch nicht. Ich werde den Mantel im November nicht mehr fertig stellen und werde auch im Dezember kein neues Projekt beginnen, sondern ich werden den Monat nutzen, um möglichst viele Ufos vor Weihnachten noch fertig zu stellen.

I am quite annoyed now.

What I'm going to do is cut one front again (luckily I have enough fabric), sew my coat and then in the end sew just normal buttonholes. Or as Frau mhs whether her new machine does the job better.

But this decision will not have to be taken soon. I will not finish my coat this month. Neither will I start a new project in december. Instead I'll try to finish as many projects as I can before christmas.

Meine Reisen und mein Reisemantel

Travelling and my travel-coat

Ein Reisemantel ist ja eine feine Sache, aber wenn man ständig herumreist, ist es etwas schwierig, die Zeit zu finden ihn zu nähen. Immerhin habe ich in Paris meine Zutatenliste weiter abgearbeitet.

A travel coat is a great thing, but with all my travelling it's difficult to find the time to sew it. At least I bought some of the necessary notions in Paris.

Zuerst war ich bei Entrèe des Fournisseurs (was sich anbietet, weil er ja quasi um die Ecke ist) und habe dort Knöpfe in zwei Größen gefunden. Metalloptik, aber angesichts meines leichten Stoffes aus Kunststoff.

Danach zog ich gen Montmartre auf der (erfolglosen) Suche nach Jersey für ein anderes Projekt. In einem der kleinen Kurzwarengeschäfte dort fand ich immerhin eine Gürtelschnalle. Dabei viel mir ein, daß ich an den Ärmelriegeln statt Knöpfen eigentlich auch lieber Schnallen hätte, also habe ich kleine Schnallen auch noch mitgenommen. Jetzt habe ich die kleinen Knöpfe übrig... denn an den Taschen brauche ich keine, denn die mache ich anders. Allerdings sind die Schnallen glänzend, also werde ich versuchen, sie noch matt zu bekommen.

First I went to Entrèe des Fournisseurs (it's just around the corner) and bought the buttons in two sizes. They look like metal, but are lightweight plastic, more suitable for my fabric.

Then I went on to Montmartre on a (futile) quest for jersey knit for another project. But in one of the smaller shops for notions I found a belt buckle. Looking at it I decided I preferred buckles for the sleeves instead of buttons and bought smaller ones, too. What did I buy the small buttons for? The buckles are shiny I'll try to find a way to make it matt.

Und weil der Laden auch Einlagen hatte, habe ich noch Gewebeeinlage gekauft.

Denn ich wollte mich diese Woche nicht nur an das Aufbügeln der Einlagen machen, sondern auch anfangen zu nähen. Mindestens die Knopflöcher, denn es sollen Paspelknopflöcher werden.

Tja... dann fiel mir allerdings ein, daß die Adventszeit vor der Tür steht und ich zu allermindest dringend die Honigleckerli und die Pommeranzenbrötchen machen sollte, denn die müssen erst einige Wochen liegen, damit sie weich werden.

The shop also had interfacing, so I bought woven interfacing, too.

The plan was to start sewing this week, like the bound buttonholes. (If you have no time, make the pattern more complicated and time consuming. One of my most favourite rules... )

Until I recognized how close the advent time is. And that baking "Honigleckerli" (a kind of gingerbread) and "Pommeranzenbrötchen" was getting urgent. Because they have to be stored some weeks before they are soft enough to eat them.

Und heute wollte mein Schwiegervater wissen, welchen Schnellkochtopf ich jetzt zu Weihnachten möchte, also mußte ich in die Stadt. (Ein paar andere Sachen waren auch aus...) Da ich die no name Einlage immer noch nicht vorgewaschen hatte, habe ich gleich noch bewährtes G785 gekauft, das ich stattdessen verwenden werde. (Falls sich noch jemand fragt, wo meine vollen Stoff und Zubehörkisten herkommen... *g*)

And today my father in law wanted to know what model of pressure cooker I wanted for Christmas, so I had to go to town. (Okay, there were other things I also needed...) As I hadn't found the time to preshrink my no name interfacing I also bought G785 that I'll take instead of the woven interfacing. (If anyone still asks how my stash builds... *g*)

Motiviert für den Reisemantel

Und natürlich ist die Zeit wieder knapp.

Travel-coat for the "Motivationsmonat" with a limited time budget, as ever...

"Wind und Wetter" ist das Thema für diesen Motivationsmonat und da der Monat schon deutlich fortgeschritten ist, muß ich jetzt auch mal heftig loslegen. Ich brauche einen neuen Mantel. Oder einen zusätzlichen. Die letzten zehn Jahre hat mich mein australischer DrizzaBone Mantel gut begleitet, aber so allmählich ist er doch recht abgeliebt und aufgescheuert. Also brauche ich einen Nachfolger. Oder so was ähnliches.

Da ich ja viel herumreise möchte ich einen Mantel in neutraler Farbe, der zwar winddicht ist und einen kleinen Regenschauer abhält, aber nicht viel wiegt, nicht knittert und waschbar ist. Außerdem soll er auch über meiner Fleecejacke noch passen, dafür aber kein eigenes wärmendes Futter haben, damit er im Sommer und auch bei kühlem Wetter getragen werden.

"Wind and weather" is the topic of this Motivationsmonat and as the month is nearly half over its more than time to start. My australian DrizzaBone coat kept me good company the last ten years but a lot of wearing and travelling didn't make it better. So it's time for a replacement.

As I'm traveling a lot I want an allround coat: neutral colour, protection against wind and a light rain, doesn't have much weight, doesn't wrinkle (to much) and can be machine washed. And it should also fit over my fleecejacket but not have a warm lining so I can wear it on a rainy summerday but also in colder weather.

Obwohl ich den ersten Teil des Monats in Berlin war und danach mit Arbeit eingedeckt, war ich nicht ganz untätig.

Zuerst einmal suchte ich einen Schnitt. Er mußte weit sein, damit die Fleecejacke auch drunter paßt und insbesondere auch ausreichend weite Armausschnitte haben. Ich habe einige Hefte durchgesehen, ein paar Schnitte ausgemessen und bin letztlich bei dem Trenchcoat aus der ersten ottobre woman von 2006 gelandet. Zumindest als Basis, ohne Änderung geht bei mir ja nix. *g*

First I searched my magazines and my pattern collection for a pattern. It had to be wide enough to fit over my fleece jacket and especially the sleeves had to be wide enough for that purpose, too. After measuring several patterns I decided that the trenchcoat from the first ottobre woman von 2006 would be a good start. With some modifications, of course.

In Berlin war ich eigentlich für eine Fortbildung, doch ich war ein bißchen früher angereist und konnte so dem Rat einer Berliner Nähfreundin folgen und bei Hüco Stoffe auf die Jagd nach einem passenden Stoff gehen. Und siehe da... ich wurde fündig. Eine helle Popeline, Baumwolle mit hohem Kunstfaseranteil, dünn, aber dicht gewoben.

Und da das alleine vielleicht doch noch etwas mehr Wind durchläßt, als mir lieb ist, habe ich vom Computer in der Hotellobby noch einen Notruf an Annette gestartet, die mir eine Windstoppermembran besorgt und geschickt hat. (Das Päckchen kam sogar noch vor mir Zuhause an...)

My stay in Berlin was for a seminar but I had come earlier so I cold follow the advice af a sewing friend from Berlin and direct my steps to Hüco Stoffe where I found indeed the perfect fabric. It's a lightweight but firmly woven popelin in a neutral beige. A bit of cotton but mostly polysomething to keep wrinkles away and make it quickly drying.

Still I thought I wanted more protection against wind so I used the free internet terminals in the hotel lobby to send a "sewing SOS" to Annette who knew where to get a wind stop membrane and sent it to me in no time. (It arrived even before I was back home.)

Inzwischen ist der Schnitt auch kopiert, die Knöpfe möchte ich am Wochenende kaufen, vielleicht bekomme ich auch Vlieseline. Denn nächste Woche möchte und sollte ich dann mal kräftig loslegen...

Meanwhile I've traced the pattern. I want to buy the buttons this weekend and maybe I can get my interfacings, too. Next week I hope to be able to do a lot of sewing...

Jersey: ein Bügeltrick

Knit fabrics: pressing hems made easy

Einen habe ich noch... Was ich gerade bei Jerseys immer mühsam fand, war das umbügeln der Saumlinie. Abmessen und Stück für Stück umbügeln. Lästig. Und noch dazu bei einem Kunstfaserjersey, der sich durch das Bügeln nicht gut fixieren läßt. Und an meinem Shirt muß eine Seite des Ausschnittbeleges umgebügelt werden, ein sehr langer Ausschnittbeleg...

I have one more... What I always found painful on knit fabrics was pressing hemlines. Measuring, marking and pressing step by step. Time consuming. Even more on a poly jersey, that will not keep it's form well when pressed. And this top does not only have seams to press but a veeery long neckline facing....

Und so geht es: Das Abmessen überlasse ich der Nähmaschine.

Ich möchte 1,5 cm von der Schnittkante entfernt umbügeln. Also nähe ich eine Naht, 1,5 cm von der Stoffkante entfernt. Markieren muß ich nichts, denn ich habe ja eine entsprechende Markierung auf der Stichplatte.

That's how I go: I let my sewing machine do the measuring and the marking in one step.

Here I want to press a 1,5 cm seam. So I stitch 1,5cm away from the fabric edge with a quite long stitch length. No marking needed, because I already have the marks on my throat plate.

Und damit habe ich nicht nur meinen Saum markiert, der Stoff läßt sich auch verhältnismäßig leicht an der Naht umbügeln.

Und da die Nähmaschine ja gerade näht, ist auch der Saum automatisch grade.

Nach dem Bügeln kann man den Hilfsfaden wieder herausziehen. Oder auch drin lassen, bei einem Jersey wird er früher oder später reißen, auch dann kann man ihn noch rausziehen. :o

Außerdem funktioniert der Trick nicht nur bei Jersey, sondern auch bei Webstoffen. Und nicht nur bei gerade, sondern auch bei gebogenen Säumen.

Now my hemline is not only marked, it also folds relatively easy along the stitches.

And as the sewing machine sews straight... the hemline is straight also.

After pressing (or after hemming) you can remove the stitches. Or not. In knits it will break anyhow sooner or later, because the stitches are not stretchy. Then you can still remove the thread. :o

The trick will also work with woven fabrics and also with curvy seamlines.

Jersey without a serger: closed seams

Bleiben noch zwei Nähte zu schließen: Die Seitennaht (bzw. zwei davon) und die Ärmeleinsatznaht. Hier bügle ich die Nahtzugaben nicht auseinander. An der Seitennaht weil es mich da nicht stört und es anders schneller geht und an der Ärmeleinsatznaht, weil es da keinen Sinn macht.

So there are two other seams to do, the sideseam and the seam that connects the sleeve to the body. In both cases I finish both seam allowances as one. On the side seam because it doesn't disturb me there and it's quicker and on the sleeve because it's the better option.

Für die Seitennaht wähle ich die faule Variante: den eingebauten Overlockstich meiner Nähmaschine. Ich habe sogar zwei davon, dieser nennt sich "geschlossener Overlockstich". Leider paßt das Nähgarn hervorragend zum Stoff und meine Kamera kann kontrastarme Sachen gar nicht gut darstellen. Deswegen habe ich das Stichbild über einige Stiche hinweg nachgezeichnet, damit jeder gucken kann, ob er auf seiner Maschine auch so einen Stich hat.

Auch die Seitennaht braucht bei einem Shirt nicht wahnsinnig viel Dehnbarkeit, vor allem so viel, daß sie den Stoff nicht "einhält" und kürzer ist als das restliche Shirt. Der Overlockstich ist dafür mehr als ausreichend, er ist weniger elastisch als eine echte Overlocknaht, aber für die meisten Einsatzzwecke mehr als ausreichend. Ich habe auch schon Badeanzüge damit genäht. Wer die Seitennähte lieber auch auseinanderbügeln will kann genauso einen Zickzackstich benutzen, etwa in der gleichen Einstellung wie hier für die Ärmel beschrieben.

Fot the side seams I choose to be lazy and sew them with the build-in overlockstitch of my sewing machine. My sewing thread matches the colour of my fabric very well and my camera is not good taking pictures with low contrast. So I tried to "redraw" some of the stitches so you can check your machine for a stitch like that.

The side seams of a top also do not need an extreme amount of stretch, it has to be enough that the the seam can stretch as much as the fabric, not less. The overlock stitch of a sewing machine is not as stretchy than a real serger seam, but for most uses it's absolutely sufficient. I have even sewn swimsuits with the overlock stitch. But if you don't have a stitch like that or want your seam allowances ironed flat you can use a zigzag stitch, like described for the sleeves.

Danach wird der überstehende Stoff der Nahtzugabe einfach neben der Naht abgeschnitten.

Then you cut back the seam allowance close to the seam.

Die Ärmelansatznaht sollte ebenfalls dehnbar sein. Da ich sie besonders flach möchte, wende ich noch mal eine andere Technik an. (Wobei ich aber auch schon Shirts nur mit dem Overlockstich genäht habe, vor allem, wenn es schnell gehen soll.)

Auch das ist nicht schwierig, ein kleiner Zickzackstich, etwa 1,8 mm lang und 1,5 mm breit. Oder wie die Dehnbarkeit eben bei eurer Maschine hinkommt. Und dann einfach mit gleicher Einstellung noch mal 6 mm von der Naht entfernt auf der Nahtzugabe nähen. Danach wird die Nahtzugabe schön flach gebügelt und knapp neben der zweiten Nahtlinie abgeschnitten. Die Ziehfäden vom Ärmel einhalten ziehe ich erst danach raus.

Das ist es auch schon.

The seam that connects the sleeve with the body of the garment should also be stretchy. I could use the overlock stitch (I have sewn complete tops with that stitch, no problem), but I want it even flatter. So there is another technique.

Also very easy: You stitch on the seam line with a zigzag stitch. Stitch length about 1.8, stitch width 1.5. Or whatever works for your fabric and your machine. Then you stitch again 6mm from the seamline on the seam allowance. Then I press the seam allowance flat and cut the rest of the seam allowance close to the second stitching. My last step is taking out the threads which held in the sleeve cap.

Knits without a serger: seams with open seam allowances

Von gekauften Shirts sind wir es gewöhnt, daß sie mit der Overlock genäht sind und die Nahtzugaben infolgedessen zusammengenommen versäubert sind. Das erzeugt allerdings recht dicke Nähte und die mag ich persönlich nicht an allen Stellen.

Ganz besonders mag ich sie nicht an der Schulter und auch nicht unbedingt an der Ärmelnaht. Aber das Nette am selbermachen ist: Ich kann es anders machen.

An diesem Shirt arbeite ich an drei Stellen mit flachgebügelter Nahtzugabe: Die Schultern, die Ärmelnähte und die Teilungsnaht des Einfassbandes für den Ausschnitt. (Das ist die, die das Bild hier zeigt.)

When we look into a purchased shirt we are used to seams where the seam allowances are overcast together with a serger. This of course creates quite bulgy seams, something I do not like everywhere on a shirt.

I hate them on shoulder seams and I do not like them to much on the sleeveseams (depending on fabric and cut). But the nice thing about DIY: I can do it in a different way.

At this shirt I'm using flat seams (seam allowances ironed flat to both sides) on the shoulder seams, the sleeve seams and the seam that connects the two pieces of the band along the neckline. (That's the seam shown on the pic above.)

Ein Vorteil ein Overlocknaht ist natürlich, daß sie sehr dehnbar ist. Eine normale Steppnaht der Nähmaschine ist das hingegen nicht.

Allerdings... selbst an einem Shirt will man gar nicht bei allen Nähten, daß sie dehnbar sind. Das Paradebeispiel dafür ist die Schulternaht. Hier näht man oft sogar einen Streifen Nahtband oder Stoff mit ein, um der Dehnung entgegen zu wirken. Also könnte man einfach eine gerade Steppnaht nähen und das Problem ist erledigt. Allerdings bleibt der Stoff dehnbar und durch die Steppnaht wird er an der Stelle relativ stark belastet, so daß die Gefahr besteht, daß auf Dauer der Stoff Schaden nimmt.

Also verstärke ich den Stoff an einer Seite mit Vlieseline. Normalerweise würde ich da Formband nehmen, ich könnte auch schwören, daß ich da noch 5m von habe, aber irgendwie... finde ich das gerade nicht. Also muß G785 herhalten. Mit der Zackenschere geschnitten, damit sich keine Ränder abzeichnen. Und... äh... fürchterlich schief geschnitten. Aber die Naht trifft die Einlage überall. Also egal.

Darüber nähe ich dann nicht mit einer Steppnaht, sondern mit einem minimalen Zickzackstich. Stichlänge 2,3, Stichbreite knapp 1. Das sieht aus wie eine "wackelige" Steppnaht, ist aber tatsächlich schon etwas elastisch. Gerade genug, um etwas Belastung vom Stoff wegzunehmen.

One big advantage of a serger is that the seams are elastic. A normal straight stitched seam with your sewing machine is not.

But even on a shirt we do not want all of the seams to have to much elasticity. The shoulder seams normally are sewn with some none elastic woven ribbon. So you could just straight stitch with your sewing maschine and that's it. Okay, nearly. You can do this and you will get along with it on may fabrics, but there remains a risk that sooner or later the fabric will break, because the seam holds the still elastic fabric too much.

To prevent that I'm using some light fusible, usually on the back piece of my pattern. Normally I'd use Vlieseline Iron On Bias Tape and I am so sure I still have quite a lot of it but I cannot find it at the moment. So Vlieseline G785 had to do. Cut with my pinking shear to make sure no edge will show on the right side. And... yes... the cutting is quite not so straight at all. But the seam hits the interfacing, so it's okay.

For sewing I change my straight stitch to a minimal zigzag, like stitch length 2.3, stitch width a tad less than one. The result looks like a wonky straight stitch, but has minimal stretch, enough to take away the stress from my fabric.

Um den Unterschied zu zeigen habe ich hier noch mal eine Probenaht mit hellem Faden genäht: Die untere Naht ist der normale Steppstich, die obere, etwas ungleichmäßg aussehende, ist in Wirklichkeit ein Zickzackstich.

Here the difference: the lower stitching line is the normal straight stitch. The upper one, that looks a bit irregular, is a zigzag stitch.

Auch die Ärmelnaht nähe ich mit diesem Stich. Zumal mein Stoff in Längsrichtung ohnehin nicht sehr elastisch ist.

Braucht man eine elastischer Naht, etwa bei Kindern die unsanft am Ärmel ziehen oder bei Sportbekleidung die stärker dehnbar sein muß, dann muß man den Zickzackstich "steiler" machen. Kürzer und ggf. etwas breiter. Meine Maschine hat dafür eine Art "Sägezahnstich" für hochelastische Stoffe (Blick ins Handbuch der Maschine lohnt immer), man kann diesen aber durch einen Zickzackstich mit Länge 1-1,2 und einer Breite von 1,2-1,5 ersetzen. Einfach ausprobieren, was die gewünschte Wirkung hat. Solche Nähte kann man auch noch gut auseinanderbügeln, auch wenn sie nicht ganz so flach werden, wie eine normale Steppnaht.

For my sleeve seams I am using the same stitch. My fabric doesn't have much stretch in the lengthwise direction anyhow.

If you need more elasticity in the seam (clothing for children who may pull on their sleeves or on garments for sport) you make the stitch steeper. Shorter stitch length, maybe a bit longer stitch width. My machine has a kind of "saw tooth" stitch for highly elastic fabrics build in (check the manual of your machine). Elseway you can set your zigzag stitch to length 1-1.2 and width 1.2-1.5. Just try what creates the stretch you need. Seams like that can not be ironed as flat as a straight stitched seam, but they are small enough to iron the seam allowances to both sides.

Don't be afraid of knits: Stretch and cutting

Immer wieder ist im Forum die Frage zu lesen, wie man denn mit Strickstoffen und Jersey umgeht, ob man das nur mit einer Overlock nähen könnte,... und nicht nur Anfänger, auch manche Näherin mit Erfahrung schreckt davor zurück. Deswegen beschreibe ich an meinem Motivationsshirt vom September ein bißchen genauer, wie es genäht habe. Ganz ohne Overlock.

Aber da gute Vorbereitung der Schlüssel zum Erfolg ist, erzähle ich erst mal noch ein paar Grundlagen.

Questions about how to sew knits are not so rare in the Forum. And not only beginners but also sewers with quite a bit experience with wovens are afraid when it comes to knits. But there is no reason for fear, and to prove that I'll describe some of the steps of the construction of my "September motivation" in detail. No serger required.

But as often good preparation is the key, so I'll start with some basics.

Die erste Frage die sich bei Strickstoffen stellt ist, wie dehnbar muß er sein? Hier sollte der Schnitt Hinweise geben. Ich habe Glück, denn mein Schnitt von Vogue liefert an der Kante der Schnittüte sogar eine Lehre zum Testen mit.

Der Stoff wird quer gefaltet, an die Kante gelegt und an den beiden Pfeilen mit je einer Hand festgehalten. Die linke Hand bleibt wo sie ist, die rechte dehnt den Stoff bis zu dem zweiten angezeichneten Pfeil. Kann ich den Stoff ohne brutale Gewalt so weit dehnen, stimmt die Dehnbarkeit. Die geforderte Dehnbarkeit hier ist eher moderat.

One of the first questions when working with knits is the question: How much stretch do I need? Here the pattern should tell you something about. My vogue pattern has the most comfortable way to test the amount of stretch.

There are marks on the edge of the pattern envelope. You fold the fabric crosswise, align it with the marks and hold the fabric. Left hand on one mark, right hand on the other. The left hand remains, the right hand stretches the fabric to the second mark. If you can do so without overstretching the fabric, the amount of stretch is just right. (My pattern needs only a moderate amount of stretch.)

In der Regel geht es um die Dehnbarkeit quer zur Stoffbahn, den Gestricktes ist in erster Linie quer dehnbar. Geht es um die Längsdehnung, sollte das explizit beim Schnitt vermerkt sein. Manchmal ist auch gefordert, daß Stoff bi-elastisch ist, also in beide Richtungen dehnbar. Dann können auch zwei unterschiedliche Angaben vorhanden sein.

Leider machen es einem nicht alle Schnitte so komfortabel. Gelegentlich sind Prozentangaben vermerkt, so wie "10 Prozent Dehnung" oder auch mal (bei Stoffen für Sportbekleidung) 100 Prozent Dehnung. Dann macht man den Dehntest wie geschildert mit einem Maßband oder malt sich diese Lehre selber. (10 Prozent Dehnung bedeutet, daß man den Stoff im Abstand von 10 cm anfasst und auf 11 cm dehnt. Bei 100 Prozent Dehnung müssen sich 10 cm auf 20 cm dehnen lassen.)

Unangenehm wird es erst, wenn der Schnitt nur von "moderater Dehnung" oder "starker Dehnung" spricht. Dann hilft leider nur raten und Erfahrung.

Usually the stretch is across the fabric, that is where knits naturally stretch. If lengthwise stretch is needed, then it should be indicated with the instructions. If the fabric has to stretch lenghtwise and crosswise this also should be indicated. Here you might also find a different amount of stretch needed for each of the directions.

Not all patterns make testing the stretch so easy. Sometimes you will find something like "10 % stretch needed" or even "100 % stretch needed" (some patterns for swim- or sportwear require that). Then you can test your fabric with tape measure or ruler in hand. Or you make those marks yourself on a piece of paper. (10 % stretch means that 10cm of fabric have to be stretched to 11cm, 100% would mean stretching the 10 cm of fabric to 20 cm)

And sometimes indication will just say something like "moderate stretch", the you have to guess.

Bei mir stimmte die Dehnbarkeit übrigens perfekt, also der ideale Stoff für den Schnitt.

(Kann ein Stoff eigentlich auch zu stark dehnbar sein? Intuitiv würde man sagen, nein, kann nicht. Das stimmt aber nicht ganz. Denn nicht jede Stelle an einem Kleidungsstück soll sich gleichermaßen dehnen. Und wenn der Stoff sich stärker dehnt als benötigt, kann der Sitz ebenfalls verändert werden. Man denke nur an Schulternähte, die sich auf einmal bis auf den Ellenbogen dehnen. Es muß nicht immer negativ sein, aber man sollte im Kopf behalten, daß es anders wird.)

In my case the stretch just fits perfectly the requirements of the pattern.

(Can a fabric have to much stretch? First thought might be "no". But that is not the whole truth. Not everything on a garment is supposed to stretch the same amount. And if the fabric has more stretch than needed, then this can alter the fit of the garment. Just think about the shoulder seam. If a garment has to much stretch there, the shoulder of the garment ends up halfway down the arm... More stretch does not have to be bad, but keep in mind that it will be different.)

Der nächste Punkt an dem sich Jerseys und Strickstoffe von Webstoffen unterscheiden ist die Ermittlung des Fadenlaufes. Zum einen hat ein Strickstoff streng genommen keinen Fadenlauf sondern einen Maschenlauf.

Falte ich einen Webstoff für den Zuschnitt, kann ich die Webekanten aufeinanderlegen und den Stoff glatt streichen. Ist er nicht in sich verzogen, dann liegt er auch gerade.

Bei einem Strickstoff ist das nicht der Fall. Dazu muß man wissen, daß Strickstoffe in der Runde gestrickt werden (quasi wie gigantische Schläuche) und dann aufgeschnitten. Durch das Stricken in der Runde läuft die Stoffbahn aber automatisch etwas schräg. Will ich also sauber im Maschenlauf zuschneiden, muß ich auch genau im Maschenlauf falten. Und muß dazu gucken, wie meine Maschen laufen. (Man kann natürlich auch einlagig zuschneiden, aber auch dann muß man den Maschenlauf finden, und zwar für jedes Schnitteil.)

Da mein Stoff interlockartig gearbeitet ist, verlaufen auf der Rückseite rechte Maschen als Längslinien. Ich suche mir so eine Maschenreihe und falte genau daran entlang. (Ich habe versucht, das Bild etwas zu bearbeiten, daß man das so halbwegs erkennt.)

Before you can cut a knit fabric you have to find the grain. That is a bit different from wovens.

For a woven you can fold it, bringing the selvedges together, then you straighten the two layers and if the fabric is straight in itself, the your fold will be on the grain. For knit fabric this cannot work. Knit fabrics are normally knit in rounds, like a giant tube. Then they are cut open, so they can lay flat. But this also means, the stitches do not run straight but are a pit slanted. Therefor, to fold exactely on the grain, you have to search the grain and fold along it. (Another option is of course, to cut the fabric in one layer, but then you will have to search the grain for each piece of the pattern.)

My fabric is a bit like interlock, so there are knit stitches on the wrong side of fabric. I just have to identify one "column" of stitches and fold along that. (I've changed the picture a bit, hoping that this makes the way the stitches run a bit more visible.)

Hier sieht man (mehr oder weniger) den Unterschied zu einem Webstoff. Das was den Schnittkanten entspricht liegt nicht gerade aufeinander, wenn der Stoff sauber im Maschenlauf liegt.

Der schwarze Strich an der linken Seite zeigt die obere Stofflage, der rote Rand ist die untere Stofflage.

The last picture shows the fabric folded on the grain.

Here you can see (more or less...) the difference to a woven fabric: that what is equivalent to the selvedges of a woven fabric is not aligned, when the fabric is fold correctly on the grain.

The black line on the left side shows the upper layer of the fabric, the red part that reaches a bit beyond that is the lower layer of the fabric.

Listen what you fabric says...

... das ist eine Erkenntnis die ich eigentlich vor langer Zeit schon hatte. Der Stoff spricht, er sagt dir, wofür er verarbeitet werden will und wie. Und das Leben ist so viel einfacher, wenn man darauf hört.

.. that's a lesson I learned a long time ago. Fabric talks, he tells you what it wants to become and how it wants to be treated. And life is so much easier, if you listen.

Deswegen habe ich das auch getan, meinem Stoff zugehört.

Und der sagt, daß er nur für einen der Schnitte wirklich geeignet ist. Alles andere wäre Murks.

Also habe ich den Schnitt heute kopiert. Und zumindest einen der beiden anderen werde ich im Kopf behalten und mir bei Gelegenheit einen passenden Stoff dafür kaufen.

So that's what I did, listen to the fabric.

And the fabric told me, that it is only suitable for one of the patterns. Anything else would be... second best.

So I traced my pattern today. But I will keep one of the other patterns in my mind and one day buy a suitable fabric for that.

Und weil Susanne es wissen wollte: Bei uns gab es heute zuerst ein Salat aus Eichblatt und Cherrytomaten mit Senfdressing, danach gekochten Weizen (so eine Art ebly, nur von Carrefour) mit gebratenen Zucchini mit Thymian und anschließen etwas Käse. Kein Nachtisch. (Bei uns wird abends gekocht.)

Soll ich eine Woche lang jeden Tag unseren Speiseplan posten, Susanne? ;)

Susanne wanted to know what we had for lunch today. In my case it's dinner because I'm not cookinf for lunch, but I think this will be okay: We had salad from green salad (well... not typical green salad, but I do not know what it's called in English) and cherry tomatoes with mustard dressing, main course was cooked wheatgrains (like "ebly", only from anoter company) with baked zucchini with thyme, after that a bit of cheese. No dessert.

I only have one knit fabric...

...deswegen ist die Stoffwahl für den aktuellen Motivationsmonat schon mal einfach. (Normale Jerseys habe ich jetzt mal nicht mitgezählt.)

Leider erkennt man außer der Farbe rot leider nichts auf dem Bild, ich gebe es zu (die Grenzen des eingebauten Blitzes). Der Stoff ist fein gestrickt, hat aber so eine Art winziges "Lochmuster" aber keine richtigen Löcher, eher so Waben.

Den Stoff hat mir jemand von einem Fabrikverkauf mitgebracht, und zwar von einer Firma die Unterwäsche herstellt. Er fühlte sich nach dem Waschen (was ich gerade gemacht habe) relativ trocken an, ist vermutlich Kunstfaser und ist zwar fein, aber gleichzeitig dicht und relativ fest. Kein Elasthan, denke ich.

.. so my choice for this months "Motivationsmonat" is easy. (I do not count the jersey knits.)

I am sorry for the bad picture, there you see the limitations of a compact camera with a build in flash.,, It's a finely knitted fabric and has a kind of ajour-structure. But no real holes, more like a kind of micro-honeycomb.

The fabric is from a grab back someone purchased for me at a factory sale. The company makes underwear and night wear, it might have been for skiing underwear or something like that. I just got it out of the washing machine and it feels relatively dry, so I guess it's some polywhatever fiber. It's thin but dense and relatively firm the same time. Not very stretchy.

Bleibt aber, den passenden Schnitt zu finden. Der Stoff lag ja auch deswegen so lange in meiner Truhe, weil ich keine Idee hatte, was ich draus machen könnte.

Kandidat Nummer eins ist der Vogue Schnitt für ein eine Art gemogeltes Wickeltop. Mit langen Ärmeln wäre es ein praktisches Teil für meine Bürogarderobe. Vielleicht mit einem etwas kleineren Ausschnitt.

Ein weiterer Vorteil ist, daß ich Vogue nicht so viel ändern muß und ich ohne Probeteil loslegen könnte. (Und wenn es schief geht... mein Stoff liegt 2 Meter breit, da bleibt Raum für Fehler...)

Ich bin mir allerdings nicht sicher, ob mein Stoff stretchig genug ist... und auch noch in beide Richtungen. Das muß ich testen, wenn er wieder trocken ist.

So I only have to pick a pattern for my fabric. Maybe not so easy, because one of the reasons why that fabric was in my stash for a long time is that I couldn't find a pattern for it...

Number one is this Vogue pattern. It's faux wrap top. The version with longer sleeves could make a versatile piece for my office wardrobe. (After raising the neckline a bit...) Another advantage is that Vogue patterns fit me quite nicely, so I could get away without a musslin. (Did I mention? The fabric width is 2 m... lot of room for errors.)

But I'm not sure whether my fabric has enough stretch. I will have to test it, once the fabric has dried.

Der nächste Schnitt ist aus dem französischen Heft "Idees Coutures Broderie". Obwohl ich normalerweise keine außen liegenden Nähte mag, gefällt es mir hier sehr gut.

Nachteile: Ich habe noch nie aus dem Heft genäht, weiß also nichts über die Paßform. Außerdem müßte ich den Schnitt wenigstens eine Größe vergrößern. Gut, ein einfacher Schnitt und die Tatsache daß ich reichlich Stoff habe wäre natürlich eine gute Gelegenheit, es zu testen.

Allerdings sieht man an dem Kragen die linke Stoffseite und die ist bei mir glatt rechts, ob das dann noch so gut aussieht? Und es bleibt die Frage, was ich mit den außenliegenden Stoffkanten mache. Die Anleitung sieht eine Overlock vor, die ich nicht habe. Auf dem Bild sieht es ja eher so aus, als lägen sie einfach offen...

Next pattern is from the French magazine "Idees Coutures Broderie". I really do like the look.

But I've never sewn anything from that magazine, so I have no idea about the fit. Plus I would have to scale it up at least one size. On the other hand... it's a simple pattern and I have a lot of fabric, so maybe a good possibility to try. Another problem is what to do with the visible seam allowances on the right side. The instructions say to use a serger which I don't have. On the other hand.. on the pic it looks as if they were just left unfinished.

Und dann ist da noch diese Jacke aus der August Knip. Die hat mir auch spontan gut gefallen. Und einen passenden Chiffon für den Ausschnitt hätte ich auch.

Allerdings ist die Jacke wohl aus Interlock und so fest ist mein Stoff dann doch nicht. Glaube ich. Kann man Strickstoff so verstärken, daß man nicht füttern muß, er aber gleichzeitig dehnbar genug bleibt?

Und es bleibt wieder das Problem, daß ich keine Erfahrung mit der Paßform habe und den Schnitt wohl vergrößern muß. Und kürzen, denn Knip ist für 172 cm große Frauen.

Number three is this jacket from the Dutch "Knip". I loved it on the first sight, Ieven had a fitting Chiffon for the neckline.

But I think they used Interlock knit and I think my fabric has not the same structure. is thinner. Is there an invisible way to interline knit? Also when it is supposed to remain stretchy.

And also the problem that this is my first Knip I have never sewn anything from that magazine and know nothing about the fit. Also here I would have to scale it up one size. And shorten it, because knip makes patterns for 172cm women.

Tja... Vorschäge wie immer sehr willkommen... in den nächsten Tagen muß ich mich wohl entscheiden.

Suggestions again more than welcome... I'll have to decide one of these days.

Bärenglücks supereinfaches Ärmelcape

Bärenglücks easy-peasy shawl with sleeves.

Pünktlich zum Ende des Motivationsmonats (so wie es aussieht wohl der letzte... es hat niemand mitgemacht und für September hat Anne keine Abstimmung mehr online gestellt und außer mir vermißt es wohl auch keiner) habe ich es auch geschafft dieses super einfache Projekt fertig zu stellen.

Erfunden habe ich den Schnitt nicht, sondern ihm im im Forum gefunden. Bärenglück hat ihn gezeigt und auch Bilder eingestellt, wie man das Teil näht. Eigentlich ist es ganz einfach, aber da ich mit reinen Bildanleitungen ohne Text immer etwas Probleme habe (ich sehe immer irgendwelche Details, die eigentlich gar nichts zu bedeuten haben und die mich von den wichtigen Sachen ablenken) gibt es hier jetzt eine Anleitung mit Text. Für diejenigen, die auch Worte brauchen. Und für totale Anfänger, denn in meiner Variante (war ja klar, daß ich was verändern muß...) ist es perfekt als erstes Stück.

August is nearly over and I managed to finish my "Motivationsmonat" project. And to put it online.

The pattern is not my invention. I*ve found it on the Hobbyschneiderin board. It was Bärenglück who showed it there and she had also put on some pics how to make it. I always have problems with "picture only" instructions, because I'm always distracted by irrelevant details and easily miss the important ones. So here is my tutorial, for those who prefere words. And also for people who are completely new to sewing, my version is perfect for a first item. (Of course I made some changes...)

Die erste Veränderung ist der Stoff: Ich wollte etwas, um mich im Winter auf der Couch einzukuscheln, also habe ich Fleece genommen.

Und der erste Schritt ist der schwierigste, man braucht ein sauber geschnittenes Rechteck. die Nahtzugaben werden links und rechts abgeschnitten und der Stoff denn entsprechend oben und unten begradigt. (Es war damals das Endstück vom Ballen, das ist selten gerade.)

Ich habe den Stoff nicht gefaltet, sondern einlagig gearbeitet und Metallineal und Rollschneider hervorgeholt. Eine größere Schneidematte wäre gut gewesen... ein Lineal das länger ist als 50 cm wäre auch praktisch gewesen... oder ein größerer Tisch, statt auf dem Boden rumzukriechen... das gerade hinzubekommen war wirklich der schwierigste Schritt. Letztlich ging es aber.

Ergebnis ist ein Rechteck, 140 cm breit und 100 cm lang. (Noch eine Änderung zum Original, ich habe es gekürzt. Ich habe ein bißchen rumprobiert und festgestellt, daß es mir kürzer besser gefällt. Außerdem will ich es ja zum Lümmeln auf dem Sofa, da ist kürzer eh praktischer.)

My first change was, that I've used fleece fabric, as I wanted something to cover on winter nights on my sofa.

The first step is the most difficult one: cutting a precise rectangle. I've used my roller blade and a metall ruler and cut of the selvage. Then I straightened the cut edges. (It was the rest of the bolt I had bought so this was very far from beeing straight...)

I didn't fold the fabric for cutting and things like a longer ruler, a bigger cutting mat and a bigger table instead of cutting on the floor would have made it easier, but in the end I succeeded. So I have a rectangle of fleece fabric, 140 cm wide and 100 cm long. (Another change, bärenglück had made hers longer, but I didn't like that on me. Also I want it mainly to sit on the sofa with, so shorter is more comfortable.)

Damit es nicht ganz so langweilig wird habe ich aus meiner Sammlung diese schöne graphische Borte von Kafka geholt. Die gabe es glaube ich mal als Geschenk auf einer Messe. Und das Grün der Ringe ist genau der gleiche Farbton wie das Grün des Stoffes.

Zwei Stücke, etwa 33 cm lang jedes. (Ich habe mich vor allem nach dem Musterrapport gerichtet.)

Then I searched in my "collection" and found a bit of that woven ribbon from Kafka, the green of the rings matches the green of the fabric. (I think I got it as a give-away on a trade fair.)

Two stripes, about 33 cm of length each. (Determined by the pattern, I counted then dots...)

Um nette Enden zu bekommen klappe ich erst mal die Ecken des Bandes als Dreiecke nach hinten um. Und einfach mit einem Streifen Wondertape festkleben.

Das ganze vier Mal, beide Enden an beiden Streifen.

The cut edges of the ribbon would fray, so I'm folding them to the left side as the pic shows. A bit of Wondertape keeps it in place.

Repeat this three times, both ends of both ribbons.

Jetzt wird das Dreieck noch mal nach innen geklappt und mit Wondertape fixiert.

Dadurch sind die Ecken ganz sauber und es gibt gleichzeitig keine zu starke Verdickung am Ende des Bandes, man kann hinterher gut drübernähen.

Then again you fold the triangle to the left side and attach it with Wondertape.

So we create very neat ends and the edge will not be tu bulky to sew over it neatly.

Dann werden die Webbänder mittig auf die Längskanten des Stoffstückes gelegt und festgenäht. Mit Wondertape festkleben ist auch hier nützlich, es geht schneller und einfacher als Stecknadeln.

Die linke Seite des Bandes liegt auf der rechten Seite des Stoffes und ich lege das Band so an, daß es einen oder zwei Millimeter über die Kante übersteht.

Not I position the ribbon on the fabric. Left side of the ribbon on the right side of the farbric, on the length sides and in the middle. Also I let the edge of the ribbon overlap the fabric by one or two millimetres.

Again Wonder Tape is your friend, it's quicker and easier than pins. Then sew it close to the edges of the ribbon.

Dann wird das Stoffstück der Länge nach (was die kürzere Seite ist...) rechts auf rechts gefaltet und an den beiden Seiten genäht. Und zwar unterhalb der aufgenähten Borte.

Die oberen 15 cm ab dem Stoffbruch werden nicht genäht, 35 cm werden knappkantig zusammengenäht. Da Fleece nicht ausfranst reicht auch ein halber Zentimeter Nahtzugabe.

Then you fold the fabric lenghtwise ("length" is the shorter side here...) right sides together. Then you pin the short sides and sew them, leaving the part with the ribbon open.

On the pic the fold is on top and the 15 cm from top remain open, the lower 35 cm get sewn together. 0.5 cm seam allowance are enough because fleece doesn't fray. (But you can make it a little larger if that is easier for you).

Im Prinzip wäre der Umhang auch schon fertig, Fleece, wie gesagt, franst nicht, man muß sonst nichts mehr machen.

Ich habe mich entschlossen noch einmal an der Kante rundum mit Zickzackstich zu nähen, einfach um optisch noch etwas mehr Abschluss zu haben.

Ich hatte noch Stickgarn (Mettler) in dem Rotton der Borte, habe einfach zwei Fäden zusammen durch die Nadel (Stärke 90) gefädelt und bin mit einem Zickzackstich an der Kante entlang gegangen, Stichlänge 3, Stichbreite 4.

Then you are already finished. Fleece, as mentioned before, does not fray, so you needn't do anything with the edge. I found some machine embroidery thread (from Mettler) matching the red of the ribbon so I decided to sew along the edge (After the seaming you have only one edge going all around.) with a zigzag stitch (length 3, width 4). To make it more visible on the thick fabric I threaded the machine treating both threads as one (needlesize 90).

Und so sieht das ganze dann fertig aus.

Leider mal wieder nur mit Selbstauslöser, unfrisiert und auf die Schnelle.

Und die Sonne war auch wieder weg, bis ich die Kamera geholt hatte.

Aber der Monat ist fast vorbei, also kann ich nicht mehr länger warten.

Einmal offen und einmal geschlossen. Es wird sicher gemütlich auf meinem Pariser Sofa diesen Winter.

Needless to say, that the little bit of sun we had today vanished once I got the camera...

Nach vielem Brüten über den Motivationsmonat habe ich eine Entscheidung getroffen.

Und wie immer ist es weder ein Schnitt noch ein Stoff von den bisherigen Vorschlägen...

Ich hatte ja mein Projekt auch im Hobbyschneiderin-Forum vorgestellt. Und da wies mich Sieglinde alias haa1959 auf ein Projekt von bärenglück (alias Hannelore) hin.

After a lot of brooding over the Motivationsmonat I've taken a decision.

And as always... it's neither one of my ideas nor one of the fabrics I had planned before.

I had also introduced my project in the Hobbyschneiderin-Forum. And there Sieglinde alias haa1959 pointed out a project from bärenglück (alias Hannelore) to me.

Und so ein Ärmelschal soll es auch werden. Allerdings nicht für elegant, sondern zum Rumlümmeln auf dem Sofa. Ich habe noch einen Rest Fleece, aus dem ich damals die Kuscheldecken für die Pariser Wohnung gemacht habe. Da habe ich nämlich gleich den ganzen Rest vom Ballen gekauft...

Jetzt muß ich nur noch verstehen, wie es gemacht wird. Es gibt zwar keine Anleitung, aber Bilder.

And that easy kind of shrug is what I want. But not as an elegant garment, I want something to hang around on my sofa. When I made the fleece blankets for our Paris appartment I had bought the whole rest of a bolt and there is some left. Not enough for a sweater... but perfect for that shrug.

I just have to figure out, how it is done. There are no explanations provided, but several pictures.

(Und falls ich es verstehe, mache ich auch eine Anleitung mit Text.)

Jetzt gucken wir mal, wie oft ich meine Meinung noch ändere. So lange weder zugeschnitten noch genäht ist, weiß man ja bei mir nie... :o

(And if I figure out how it is done I can make a tutorial with explanations.)

Now let's see whether I stick to that. As long as there is nothing cut or sewn I still can change my mind... :o

Neues aus der Stofftruhe

Heute war der große Ausflug in meine Stofftruhe... da waren in der Tat einige Stöffchen die sich eignen könnten. Denn wenigstens will ich keinen neuen Stoff kaufen.

I'm back from my excursion into my fabric trunc.

Hier wären einmal Bauwollstoffe, die in ausreichender Menge für die Tunika vorhanden wären.

Here two cotton fabric, enough for the the tunic.

Also dieser Schnitt... Ich glaube hier würde ich den afrikanisch bedruckten Stoff bevorzugen. Denn ich bin mir so gar nicht sicher, ob der Schnitt auch nur im entferntesten gut aussieht.

Und in dem Stoff wäre es auf alle Fälle ein bequemes Nachthemd. Und von dem Rosenstoff habe ich eine ganze Menge und ich liebe Rosen... da möchte ich doch lieber was tragbares draus machen.

Just to remember, that was the tunic pattern... I think I'd prefer the african print for that, because I have big doubts whether this pattern can look good.

And with that fabric it would definitely be a night shirt. From the print of roses I have more than needed. And I like the roses so much, that I'd prefere to make something more wearable out of it.

Aber auch dicke Stoffe habe ich gefunden.

But there are also some thicker fabrics in my "collection".

Von der Menge her würden sie alle für die kurze Variante genügen.

Am meisten Spaßt würde mir eigentlich der Dalmatiner Plüsch machen. Wenn schon verrückt, dann richtig.

Leider würde das maximal für Größe S reichen und ich kenne niemanden, der ein Minicape in getüpfeltem Plüsch haben wollte. (Wenn hier jemand ist, der so was gerne in Größe S hätte... ganz schnell hier schreien... bevor ich was anderes zugeschnitten habe. *g*)

Those are the fabrics that would be enough for the mini cape.

Most fun to sew would be the faka fur. If crazy.. then really weird.

But here the fabric would only be enough for a model in size "S" and I don't know anyone in that size who'd like to wear that. (If you are size "S" and you'd like to have a small cape in dalmatian fur... raise yor hand quickl.., before I start cutting something else. *g*)

Der schwarz-weiße Stoff ist ein schwerer Wollstoff von dem ich etwa 2m habe. Ohnehin zu wenig für eine Jacke oder einen Mantel. Und man konnte ihn sicher irgendwie besticken, befilzen oder anderweitig dekorieren.

The black and white fabric is a rather heavy wool. I only have 2m of that, not enough for a jacket or a coat. And it would be a nice canvas for embroidery, felting or another decorative technique.

Der rote Wollstoff ist hingegen recht leicht und weich. Der Rest eines Abendkleides. (Das kommt davon, wenn man nach eigenen Schnitten arbeitet... grob verkalkuliert.. :o) ) 1.30m sind zu wenig für irgenwas sinnvolles.

Allerdings würden sie für diese niedliche Pelerine reichen. Zumindest in Größe 42... Und über einer grau-melierten Strickjacke könnte das tatsächlich niedlich aussehen. Allerdings habe ich weder eine solche Strickjacke, noch bin ich mir sicher, ob es in MEINER Größe auch niedlich aussieht. Oder nur lächerlich?

The red woll on the contrary is light, soft and drapeble. The leftover of an evening gown. (The problem with selfdraftet patterms... miscalculation of fabric needed.) 1.30m had never been enough for something usefull.

But it would indeed be enough for that cute burda thing. At least in Size 42. And over a grey cardigan it could look cute. But I don't have a grey cardigan. And I am far from sure whether it also looks cute in MY size?
