Waterproblems or Paris in Summer

Paris kann im Sommer doch recht heiß werden und wenn man so vom Eiffelturm zu Notre Dame läuft (oder woanders hin), dann kommt schnell das Bedürfnis nach Flüssigkeit auf. Im Prinzip ist das kein Problem, denn es gibt jede Menge Bars und Cafés die hier gerne Getränke aller Art servieren. An einem heißen Tag geht das natürlich schnell ins Geld.

Günstiger ist da die Flasche Wasser vom Lebensmittelgeschäft, die es nach wie vor an jeder Ecke gibt oder gleich von einem der größeren oder kleineren Supermärkte.

Aber es geht auch billiger, kostenlos, um genau zu sein.

Mit den Fontaine Wallace.

Diese Brunnen stehen in fast allen Pariser Arrondissements (dieser Wikipedia-Artikel listet auch die Standorte auf) und was dort zwischen den Karyatiden fließt ist Trinkwasser. Mehr als einen Becher zum drunterhalten braucht man also nicht.

(Der einzige Nachteil ist, daß das Pariser Trinkwasser meist mehr oder weniger gut gechlort ist, was nicht schädlich, aber eben geschmacklich etwas unangenehm ist.)

Summer can be quite hot in Paris and when you stroll from the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame (or somewhere else) you quickly feel the need for some liquid. Sure, there are plenty of Bars or Cafés who are willing to sell you any hot or cold drink you want. Only on a hot day that means you have to spend a lot of money.

If you buy a bottle of water at one of the many small groceries it's cheaper and even cheaper is it when you find one of the smaller or bigger supermarkets.

But you can have it still cheaper, for free.

Just find a Fontaine Wallace.

There are several of those in nearly all arrondissements (this wikipedia articel contains a list of all fountains) and what runs between the caryatides is normal tap water.You just need a cup to catch the water.

(The tapwater in Paris has perfect drinking qualities, the only thing that can disturb is the taste of chlorine, sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less.)

Das allerdings löst nur das halbe Problem, denn Wasser was in den Körper hinein geht, will auch wieder raus. Und da wird es dann richtig spannend...

Im Café oder in der Bar ist es natürlich kein Problem, die haben Toiletten, wenn auch nicht immer zum Sitzen und häufig klein. Außerdem verlangen manche Gaststätten tatsächlich Geld dafür. (Als Gast der etwas konsumiert hat fragt man in der Regel an der Theke nach "une piece pour les toilettes, s'il-vous plait" und bekommt dann normalerweise die passende Münze.)

Abgesehen davon wird es schon schwierig, die großen Kaufhäuser haben Toiletten, das sind aber genau vier (BHV, Galeries Lafayette, Le Bon Marché und Printemps), Supermärkte oder kleinere Kaufhäuser wie Monoprix haben in der Regel keine. Einkauszentren sind im Zentrum von Paris eher dünn gesät. In den Museen wird man fündig, aber häufig erst nach der Kasse.

This of course is only half of the problem. Water that goes in wants to go out after some time. And in Paris this can be the crucial point...

Of course a Café or a Bar will have toilets (often small and not always to sit). But some might want to charge you for using them. (As a paying customer you can usually ask the waiter at the counter for "une piece pour les toilettes, s'il-vous plait" and get a coin.)

Apart from that it's getting more complicated, only the for big department stores (BHV, Galeries Lafayette, Le Bon Marché und Printemps) have facilities, supermarkets or smaller stores as Monoprix don't. Shopping Malls in the center of Paris don't come in big numbers. And in museums it's often after the ticket box.

Natürlich gibt es auch dafür eine Lösung. Zumindest in der Theorie.

Nachdem die Feministinnen dafür gesorgt haben, daß die früher zahlreich vertretenen Pissoires abgeschafft werden mußten wurden stattdessen diese vollautomatischen und von beiden Geschlechtern zu benutzenden Toilettenhäuschen aufgestellt. Und seit einigen Jahren ist die Benutzung sogar kostenlos.

Da sie sich nach jeder Benutzung automatisch reinigen muß man sich wegen der Hygiene auch keine Sorgen machen. Allerdings dauert der Reinigungsprozess und wenn eine ganze Reisegruppe vor einem Häuschen Schlange steht, dann dauert das. Denn die Kabinen reinigen sich wirklich nach jedem Benutzer. (Was auch nicht vorgesehen ist, ist eine Trockung. Gerade im Herbst und Winter ist das dann zwar alles sauber, aber nass und kalt....)

Of course there is a solution, at least theoretically.

Since the feminists made sure that the old urinals had to go those fully automatized unisex toilet boxes were placed all over Paris. And for some years they are even free.

No worries regarding hygienics, because the boxed do an automatic cleaning cycle after each use. This cleaning cycle, of course takes some time. And if a tourist group wants to use one of the boxes that will take a good part of the afternoon. Because there is no way do shorten the cleaning cycle. (Another thing that has not been thought of is a possibility to dry the interior after the cleaning. So expecially in autumn and winter it may be clean, but it definitely is cold and wet...)

Während der Reinigung zeigt einem die Kabine übrigens das "besetzt" Zeichen.

Und noch eine kleine Widrigkeit tut sich auf (man beachte die kleine Schrift auf dem weißen Knopf), die Dinger haben tatsächlich... Öffnungszeiten. Bei den meisten ist schon zwischen 19.00 und 20.00 Uhr Schluß, nach 22.00 Uhr ist endgültig Sense.

While the cabin is cleaning it will show itself als "occupied".

But even if that is not the case there is another tiny downside (read the writing on the white button), the boxes have... closing hours. Usually between 7 p.a. and 8 p.m., after 10 p.m. it's over.

Und sollte es mal tagsüber sein, auch keine lange Menschenschlange davor stehen... dann zeigen sich die Kästen als echte Maschinen und zeigen das an, was wir von den Bahnautomaten auch gut kennen: "Außer Betrieb". :o)

But there are moments when it's daytime, not occupied and no long queues waiting... then the boxes will show you that they are real machines and show what we probably know well from any ticket maschine: "Out of order". :o)

(Aber im Moment werden alle diese Toiletten durch neuere und tollere ersetzt. Vielleicht funktionieren die dann auch mal zuverlässig.)

Fashion-Flash Paris, Spätfrühling 2009

Die letzten Tage des kalendarischen Frühlings habe ich mal wieder in Paris verbracht und natürlich auch da mal wieder geguckt, welche Modetrends denn im Moment so auf der Straße zu sehen sind.

The last days of spring I've spent in Paris and as always I was curious what fashion trends were in the streets.

Auffällig waren zunächst einmal die vielen schwarzen Kleider, verschiedene Schnittformen, aber immer etwa knielang und weder eng noch extraweit.

Dieser Plusschnitt aus der Juni Burda wäre da also ein perfekter Vertreter. (Und ich muß immer noch meinen Trenchcoat fertig nähen, bevor ich mir neue Projekte erlauben kann. *seufz*)

Very obvious were black dresses. Different cuts, but always about knee length and neither wide nor tight.

This plus sized pattern of the June BWOF would therefor be perfect. (And I still have to finish my coat before I can allow myself new projects....)

Auch omnipräsent waren Leggins, von 3/4 bis extralang, mit Spitze oder ohne, entweder nur unter einer langen Tunika oder einem weiten knielangen Rock. Meist schwarz oder grau.

Jeans waren ebenfalls immer noch zu sehen. (Ja, für Paris ist das ungewöhnlich) Auch wenn sie sich allmählich wieder auf die unter 30jährigen beschränken. Und dunkel müssen sie sein.

Another omnipresent trend were leggins, from calf- to full length, mostly black or grey, plain or with lace. Worn either with a long tunic or under a wide skirt.

Jeans also are still there. (Yes, for Paris that is unusal.) But they seem to be restricted to the under 30th. At least they have to be dark in colour.

Auch immer wieder sichtbar waren Hosen mit leichter Überlänge, die am Knöchel mit einem Band oder Gummi zusammengefaßt waren. Aber nicht pluderig fielen, sondern im Gegenteil recht elegant aussahen. Ich habe gerade mal gesucht, aber dafür habe ich bei den Schnittherstellern kein Beispiel gefunden. Entweder ist der Trend noch zu neu oder zu klein.

Another thing I spied severals times were pants with a bit of overlength that were tied at the ankle with drawstring or an elastic. But they did not look like clown-pants, but quite elegant. I just checked but couldn't find a pattern for that. Either this trend is to new yet or to local to make a pattern.

Und natürlich war ich auch neugierig, ob der überall angepriesene Trend zum Maxikleid auch sichtbar wäre. (Hier ein Beispiel aus der aktuellen Juli Burda.)

Bis Samstag Abend hätte ich gesagt: Nein. Ich hatte in den vier Tagen vorher drei Kleider in Wadenlänge gesehen und zwei Maxikleider an Touristinnen. (Eine sprach spanisch, die andere englisch.) Doch dann kam der Sonntag und eine brennende Sonne und auf einmal tauchten sie auf, lang, bunt und offensichtlich auch an einheimischen Frauen. Vielleicht sollte ich meinen grünen Sari verarbeiten...

And what about the Maxidress, everyone is talking about? Well until Saturday I would have said No, not in Paris. In four days I had seen three calf length dresses and two in ankle length. The latter on tourists (one speaking spanish, the other english).

But then came sunday and a hot burning sun and maxi dresses in colourfull prints appeared. Not in big number, but noticable and also on Paris women and girls.

Und die Schuhe?

Zwei Möglichkeiten: ultraflach oder Highheels. Und wer wenig Geld ausgeben will: plastik Flipflops in rauhen Mengen.

And for shoes?

Two options: ultraflat or highheels. And if you are on a budget: plastic thongs, type beach thong.

Flipflops übrigens auch an Männerfüßen. Und eine für Paris ebenfalls ungewöhnliche Anzahl kurzer Hosen, manche kniebedeckt, andere auch etwas kürzer. (Ich habe jetzt nicht gesagt, daß das immer gut aussieht...) Und einige davon sogar aus bunten Druckstoffen. Pinke Riesenblüten auf weiß war da die gewagteste Variante die ich gesehen habe....

Ein Glück, daß ich die alten Shorts aus den 80ern von meinem Herzblatt mal weggeworfen habe. Nicht daß er auf die Idee kommt, die noch aufzubrauchen... *gg*

Thongs were for men also. And very unusal for Paris shorts, either calf length or even showing the knees. (I didn't say that it always looked good....) Luckily only a minority of those shorts were made of colourfull cotton prints. Can you imagine huge pink flowers on white? I couldn't, but I had to see it...

Luckily I throw away my sweethearts shorts from the 1980th, elseway he might have thought this a good time to use them... *gg*

Coffee and cake in Paris: Couderc Montmartre

Typisch deutsch ist sicher die Vorstellung von Kaffee und Kuchen am Nachmittag. Wer aber in Paris in ein "Café" geht, wird da meist ganz bitterlich enttäuscht, mit einem deutschen Café hat das so gar nicht viel zu tun. Aber trotzdem müssen Liebhaber süßer Kleinigkeiten nicht darben, das richtige Stichwort heißt nur "Salon de Thé".

Und ein besonders leckerer Vertreter dieser Kategorie befindet sich am Montmartre, nur wenige Meter von den Stoffgeschäften entfernt kann man auf blauen Polstern Platz nehmen und fühlt sich um ungefähr hundert Jahre zurückversetzt. Der Life-Pianist, der einen Nachmittag in der Woche aufspielt trägt seinen Teil dazu bei.

Die leckeren französischen Patisserie-Teilchen kann man an einer Theke aussuchen, wenn man also nicht weiß wie es heißt, ist das egal, draufzeigen reicht. Ich war schon mehrfach dort, das Gebäck war immer frisch und immer hochdelikat, seinen Preis also wert. (Ebenso der Kaffee, mit Tee habe ich es noch nicht versucht.)

Und wer es lieber salzig mag, Mittags gibt es auch Quiches, Salate und andere kleine Gerichte.

Beeing German having coffee and cake in the afternoon is a tradition that is not easy to maintain in Paris, because when you enter a "Café" it's far from what you expect, they do not even always have pastry or cakes. But still it's possible to get sweet pastry and a cup of coffee in Paris, all you have to do is enter a "Salon de Thé".

An extremely delicious of those is on Montmartre, only some steps away from the fabric stores. You enter and you feel like 100 years ago when you sit down on the blue upholstered chairs where you can listen to a piano player (at least once a week...)

All the pastry is on display (behind glass and well cooled) so even if you do not know, what it is called you can point on it. I've been there several times and the pastry was always fresh and highly delicous. So it's worth the money. (Same for the coffee, I haven't tried the tee so far.)

And if you don't like sweet, they also offer salads, quiches and other small dishes for lunch.

40 Jahre Strick und mehr: Sonia Rykiel

40 years knit and more: Sonia Rykiel

Regen in Paris ist ja eine perfekte Gelegenheit, in eine Ausstellung zu gehen. Mein erster Versuch war Sonntag, aber da ging die Warteschlange vor dem Musée des Arts Décoratifs etliche Meter weiter, als ich im Regen warten wollte. Also kam ich Dienstag gegen Mittag wieder und wurde sowohl mit einer fehlenden Schlange als auch generell mit einer ruhigen Ausstellung belohnt. (Abgesehen von einigen Studentinnen und Omas mit Schulkindern im Schlepptau - es waren ja noch Schulferien in Frankreich, also müssen die Großeltern ihre Enkel bespaßen.)

Rain in Paris is a perfect occasion to see an exhibition. My first try was Sunday, but there was already a queue waiting in front of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, longer than what I was willing to wait outside on a rainy day. So I came back Tuesday late afternoon and was not only rewarded by a non existent waiting time but also with a calm exhibition. There were not many visitors, except for some students and grandmas with kids - school holiday in Paris means that the grandparents have to entertain the children.

Eigentlich bin ich kein Fan von Sonia Rykiel, im Gegenteil, ihr Stil gefällt mir nicht besonders und außerdem steht er mir gar nicht. Er ist schön an langen, dünnen bis mageren Frauen mit wenig Form und das war ich nie. Aber andererseits gibt es nicht so viele Designer, die sich vor allem mit Strickmode befassen, also war ich doch neugierig.

Und wurde letztlich nicht enttäuscht. Die Ausstellung geht über zwei Etagen, die Ausstellungsstücke sind größtenteils hinter Glas, aber relativ locker gestellt, daß man doch viele Details erkennen kann. (Wie üblich bei Textilausstellungen ist das Licht natürlich gedämpft.) Die Ausstellung hat den üblichen Aufbau, teilweise chronologisch, teilweise dann nach wiederkehrenden Themen sortiert, zum Abschluss dann Werke anderer Designer als Hommage an die Künstlerin.

Ergänzt wird das ganze durch diverse Videopräsentationen, teilweise an Fernsehern, kleinen Bildschirmen und einer großen Projektion auf eine Leinwand.

I'm not a fan of Sonia Rykiel, on the contrary I don't like her style at all. Plus it doesn't look good on me. It's flattering for long and thin (to meagre) women without curves and I never was that. But on the other hand there are only quite a few designers who are specialiced in knit, so I was curious enough to see it.

And it was worth it. The exihibition goes over two floors, the exhibits are mostly behind glass but not to close together so you can see quite a lot of details. The light, as always on textiles, is low, of course. It starts chronologically then it changes and most of the things are grouped together under topics and themes typical for the designer. It ends with creations from other designers as hommage to Rykiel.

In addition to the textiles there are videos from fashion shows or interviews.

Ich habe mir die Ausstellungsstücke recht intensiv angeguckt, sowie einen großen Teil des großen Videos, das sich hauptsächlich mit den Defilees befaßte, und war trotzdem nach kaum zwei Stunden durch. (Was für eine Ausstellung absolut okay ist. Das Ticket berechtigt auch zum Besuch des restlichen Museums, wer das noch nicht kennt, kann die Gelegenheit also nutzen.) Dabei habe ich mir einige Anregungen mitgenommen und auch festgestellt, daß mir Rykiels Modelle vor der Zeit ihres eigenen Labels besser gefallen, als ihr "typischer" Stil.

Die Präsentation war eigentlich ganz gut, abgesehen davon, daß die Nummern der Ausstellungsstücke teilweise etwas chaotisch waren und die vorgesehene Reihenfolge der Vitrinen einzuhalten nicht ganz leicht fällt.

Weniger gut haben mir die Videos gefallen. Die Qualität der Leinwandpräsentation war so schlecht, daß meist ein Großteil des Bildes überbelichtet war und kaum etwas zu erkennen. Ob das an der Einstellung des Projektors oder an einer miesen Qualität des Ausgangmaterials (in den 80ern waren Videokameras noch nicht so gut wie heute) lag, war nicht festzustellen. Definitiv eine Fehlplanung der Aussteller war die Position der Präsentationen: Die Projektion lief unten an der Wendeltreppe, ein weiteres Video direkt darüber, so daß die Tonspur des jeweils anderen gut zu hören waren. Störend.

Als Fazit aber dennoch: Besuchenswert.

I took my time and examined anything interesting as long as I wanted also I watched a good deal of the video about the fashion shows on the big screen and still it didn't take me more than two hours. (Which is absolutely okay for an exhibition. The ticket allows you to see the whole museum, so if you haven't been there yet you can spend some more hours there.) I got some inspiration for myself and also learned, that I liked the things she did before she had her own lable more than her "typical" style.

The presentations was quite good, even though the numbers on the pieces sometimes were a bit at random order and it was not always clear how they expect you to move to see the things in the order they were supposed to be seen.

What I liked less were the videos. One problem, expecially with the big presentation of the fashion shows was the poor quality. Often everything was just white on the screen, not possibility to really see something, not to talk about details. I cannot say whether the original videos are of such a poor quality or if the projection is done so poorly. What definitely is bad planning of the museum is to place two video areas, one on top and the other on the bottom of an open staircase. Whatever you want to watch, you'll always hear the sound of both videos. Disturbing and not a good idea.

Still I don'r regret having seen the exhibition!

Die Ausstellung läuft noch bis zum 19. April 2009, das Museum ist Montag geschlossen und Donnerstag gibt es eine verlängerte Öffnungszeit bis 21.00 Uhr. Der Eintritt liegt bei 8 EUR.

The exhibition will be on until the 19th of april 2009, the musuem is closed on mondays, on thursday they have proöonged opening hours until 21.00. Entrance fee is 8 EUR.

And what I did bring back...

China, Tokio,... nein, so weit war ich gar nicht.

Paris reicht. *g*

Und diese beiden Postkarten aus dem Shop des Musee des Arts Decoratifs mußten natürlich zu mir.

Paris is far enough for such exotic views, too. *gg*

Aber nicht nur die Karten habe ich gefunden, in der großen Abteilung über Modebücher stolperte ich über dieses Gradier-Manual. Ist billiger als ein Konstruktionsbuch und oft reicht es ja, einen schönen Schnitt in die richtige Größe zu bekommen.

Bei den Stoffen war ich, wie man sieht, sehr gemäßigt.

Meine schwarzen Shirts sind ja nach wie vor mehr dunkelgrau, also habe ich schwarzen Baumwollinterlock mitgenommen. Und weil er so schön daneben lag.. ein dünner Wolljersey, eine Qualität die man je eher schwer bekommt und wenn, dann teuer.

Die kleine Schleife über den Montmartre durch Sacrés Coupons Coupons hat sich also rentiert. Das ist dann aber erst für den nächsten Winter.

But I did not only buy those cards, the shop has also an interesting department of books about fashion and pattern making. And there this grading manual waited for me. It's cheaper than a pattern making book and often its enough, to be able, to grade a beautiful pattern to the right size.

As far as fabrics are concerned I was very reasonable. I only got a black cotton interlock. My black shirts still are more dark gray (somehow they don't get better...) so this will be usefull. And then there was that finde, black woolen single jersey. A quality hard to find in Germany and usually very expensive.

So strolling on Montmartre through Sacrés Coupons did pay. But the fabrics will be more for next autumn and winter,

Sehenswerte Krinolinen

Den letzten Parisbesuch habe ich natürlich auch für kulturelles Programm genutzt und war im Museum. (Zumal es dort wärmer war als im Freien.) Ins Musée Galliera wollte ich schon länger mal, da es aber nur für temporäre Ausstellungen geöffnet ist, hatte das noch nicht geklappt. Aber die Ausstellung Sous l’Empire des crinolines zog mich diesmal hinein.

Last time I was in Paris I did not only shopping, I also went to see some exhibitions. (Also inside is warmer than outside in winter...). I had always wanted to go to Musée Galliera but somehow never made it. But this time the exhibition Sous l’Empire des crinolines helped me finding a way in this time.

Natürlich beginnt die Ausstellung mit opulenten Ballroben und zugehörigen Accessoires wie Fächern und Schmuck. Was mir bei aller Bewunderung auffiel war, daß man damals auf den Musterverlauf offensichtlich herzlich wenig Wert gelegt hat. Auch schienen mir viele Abnäher an den Corsagen eher gefaltet, als genäht zu sein. Wenig verwunderlich, denn Stoff war teuer und ich nehme an, man konnte Dinge leichter umarbeiten.

Viele Details waren natürlich mehr als einen Blick wert. Was mich aber absolut fasziniert hat, ist dieser Saum. Es ist Seide und die Blätter sowie Rosen sind offensichtlich geprägt. Und dann? Einfach ausgeschnitten? Da ist nichts umgenäht, nichts rolliert, kein Saum, sondern eine Schnittlinie, die den Blättern exakt folgt und es franst nichts aus! Hat jemand irgendeine Ahnung, wie das gemacht wurde? Das Kleid stammt immerhin aus der zweiten Hälte des 19 Jahrhunderts, da war noch nichts mit Lasercut.

(Die Farbe war übrigens ein freundliches, klares rosa. Aber ohne Blitz kann das meine Kamera nicht besser.)

Of course the exihbition starts with sumptous ball gowns. Even though many of them were breath taking with those fabrics, lace, detailed embroidery,... I recognized that matching the fabric design, even stripes, was not the main concern of the 19th century seamstress. If she cared at all. Also some "darts" that shaped the tops seemed more merely folded and nut cut out. As fabric was expensive and it was, as far as I know, common practice to alter or redesign gowns they probably tried not to damage the fabric more than necessary.

Many overwhelming details to look at. But what stunned me most, I think, was this hem. It's silk, embossed with roses and leafs. And then? The cut follows precisely the leafs, there is no hem, nothing sewn, still it does not ravel. Has anyone any idea what tools they might have used to achieve that? Lasercut wasn't an option then. (The colour of the pic is not true, it was a friendly clear pink, but without flash in dim lights my camera couldn't do better.)

Neben den Ballkleidern gibt es aber auch Tageskleider, Reisekleidung, Sommerkleidung,... zu sehen. Dazu Schuhe, Sonnenschirme, Täschchen, Spitze,... selbst einige Crinolinen sind nackt zu sehen und ein Oberteil war mit der linken Seite nach außen gelegt, um die Verarbeitung zu erkunden.

Zusätzlich gab es noch einiges an Informationen, etwa wie die aufkommende Industrialisierung die Kleidung beeinflusste (z.B. indem Stoffmotive so gedruckt werden konnten, daß sie parallel zum gerundeten Rocksaum verliefen) oder wie sich das Ideal der weiblichen Figur gegenüber heute verändert hat. Das beschränkt sich nämlich nicht auf die damals geschnürte Taille.

Also they show a variety of day dresses, for summer, for travelling,... along with shoes, umbrellas, lace... even some "naked" crinolines to study the metallic structure and one top is shown inside out to see a bit of the way it was sewn.

And of course a lot more information like how the beginning industrialisation influenced fashion (e.g. it became possible to print fabric designs in a way they would be parallel to the rounded hemlines) or how the ideal female shape changed from then to today. (There are far more differences than waist stay or not.)

Sylvester habe ich ja in Paris verbracht und es war.... kalt. Aktivitäten in geschlossenen Räumen waren somit von großen Interessen (eine neue Stoffgeschäftbeschreibung und ein Ausstellungesbericht folgen).

("Glagla" ist das was Franzosen machen, wenn ihnen kalt ist.)

Schnee blieb uns weitgehend erspart (ab der dritten Flocke bricht in Paris dann eh das Chaos aus), aber es reichte, um Brunnen schneller zufrieren zu lassen, als man ihnen das Wasser abgedreht hat.

The turn of the year I spent in Paris. And it was... freezing cold. (Inside activities became more interesting, so I plan to write a review of an exhibition and another shop review.)

We didn't see much snow (which is good because it takes like three snowflakes to create complete chaos in Paris) but it was cold enough to have fountains frozen before someone could stop the water and drain it.

... zumindest in Paris

Christmas is near... at least in Paris

Wobei es diesmal ja eine gewisse Berechtigung hat, denn der erste Advent ist tatsächlich schon am übernächsten Wochenende. Also Zeit für einen kleinen Überblick über die diesjährige Weihnachtsdekoration der Kaufhäuser.

"Printemps" hat sich schon wieder neu eingekleidet, Kosmische Träume sind das Thema und so ist die Illumination wieder relativ schlicht, aber ein bißchen spacig.

Die tanzenden Puppen in den Fenstern hingegen waren auch etwas... sparsam. Und uninspiriert. Das hat man schon mal besser gesehen.

At least the "Grand Magazin" in Paris brought out their Christmas decoration. If I come to think about the fact that the first advent will be in about ten days, therefor still in November timing can be considered okay now. So here is my overview.

"Printemps" made a complete redo, everything new and shiny, relatively calm though. Cosmic dreams were the topic, so they aim for something kind of "space something".

While the outside is nice (better than what my poor picture could capture) the dancing puppets in the windows were... uninspired. I know they can do better.

Keine Zurückhaltung hingegen bei den Galeries Lafayette, prächtig protzig überstrahlen sie die Straße.

Ein vertrauter Anblick, denn letzten Jahr, vor zwei Jahren und noch ein bißchen länger hat sich da nicht viel getan. Die Deko hat vermutlich das Budget für ein ganzes Jahrzehnt verschlungen, von den Stromkosten gar nicht zu reden. ;)

Plain "bling" for "Galeries Lafayette", their christmas decoration could replace the street lights.

A very familiar view, by the way. Like last year, two years ago... and I don't remember for how long they are using the same decoration. Evidently buying it must have used up a ten year budget. Not to talk about the electricity bill... ;)

Der Weihnachtsbaum erstrahlt dafür ganz neu und pink in diesem Jahr, wie auch die tanzenden Puppen in den Fenstern. (Wegen der vielen davorstehenden Kinder leider kein Bild.) Die sind dieses Jahr auf alle Fälle interessanter als beim Nachbarn.

(Wenngleich natürlich das neue pinke Outfit nicht mehr so recht zur alten Lichterpracht paßt...)

Everything new inside... the christmas tree and the decoration shows a lot of pink, as do the shop windows with the dancing dolls. Much more interesting than those next door.

Das neue Farbschema erstreckt sich auch nicht über die Straße bis zur Haushaltswaren und Möbelabteilung, trotzdem sind deren Schaufenster einige Blicke wert.

Viele Designer und Modeschöpfer durften sich nämlich an den WLAN-Hasen (die einen ganz coolen Namen haben, den ich mir aber nie merken kann) austoben... :)

The colour scheme doesn't stretch over the street to the household and furniture department, still their windows are worth several looks, too.

(Fashion)Designers were invited to let their imagination play and find outfits for those WLAN-rabbits (which have some ultracool name that I can never remember...).

Bon Marché habe ich mal wieder weggelassen, denn er liegt einfach so gar nicht an meinem Weg, aber BHV ist so nah an meiner Wohnung, daß es eine Schande gewesen wäre, nicht wenigstens mal vorbei zu sehen.

Der Fassadenschmuck ist hell und nett, aber nicht sehr aufregend...

Bon Marché didn't make it into my selection just because it's usually far off my route. But "BHV" is so close to my Paris home, that it would have been a shame, not to have a look.

The facade has light and quite a lot of it, but nothing thrilling...

Der Charme erschließt sich erst, wenn man an den Schaufenstern enlang geht, die einen mit Einhörnern und Drachen mit klimpernden Wimpern ins Land der Legenden enführen wollen und dabei unter einem strahlenden Baldachin entlangschreitet...

But you feel its charme when you walk along the windows, watching unicorns and big and/or ultra cute dragons that want to take you to the Land of Legends. Then you walk under this radiant canopy...

Winterchic für Pfosten

Was trägt der Pfosten von Welt im Winter?

Gestricktes, zumindest in Paris.

Ich habe diese Strickschläuche an einigen Orten gesehen, nicht nur an Wegweisern, auch an Regenrohren und anderen Dingen.

Ich erinnere mich, irgendwo mal von so einer Aktion in New York gelesen zu haben, aber leider weiß ich nicht mehr wo und auch nicht, was es bedeutet. Aber wer beim nächsten Parisbesuch die Augen offen hält, findet vielleicht noch ein paar mehr.

What do signposts wear in winter?

Knit, of course. At least in Paris.

I've noticed those mega cozies at several places, not only on signposts, but on other vertical columns, too.

I remeber vaguely, having read about something like that in New York, but I can't find it again. Neither do I know what it means. But if you keep your eyes open next time you visit Paris, you might be able to spot some more.

Und da sagen die Leute immer, für Tierbeobachtung müßte man in die Natur gehen.

Von wegen, in Paris geht das auch prima.

Und die Raben fühlen sich dort auch sehr wohl, denn auch sie wissen die Segungen der Zivilisation zu schätzen, ein Selbstbedingungsrestaurant etwa, das aus der mühsamen Futtersuche einen einfachen Auswahlprozeß machen.

Some people say for bird watching you have to go out into nature.

But why? It works perfectly well in Paris.

Because also ravens enjoy the advantages of civilisation.

Und was lernen wir aus dieser Naturbeobachtung?

Raben können Farben unterscheiden. Denn wie man deutlich sieht, bemühen sie sich alle nur um den grünen Sack, nicht um den gelben.

Raben haben verstanden, was Mülltrennung bedeutet. Denn der grüne Sack enthält gemischten Restmüll. Gelb steht für Verpackungsmüll. Und wer will schon Verpackungen?

Und Raben haben scharfe Schnäbel. Bis der Sack offen war dauerte es nur wenige Minuten.

So what teaches us that about birds?

Ravens can distinguish colours. At least green and yellow. Because, as you can see easily, they are only interested in the green bag not at all in the yellow one.

Ravens understand the pricipal of waste separation. The yellow bag contains packages, the green one the rest. An who wants tha package?

And ravens have sharp beaks. It only took them minutes to get through...

Schlaflose Nächte in Paris

Gut, die kann man in Paris immer haben, wenn man mag, aber die Nacht von Samstag auf Sonntag war eine spezielle.

Kunstinstallationen sozusagen einmal quer und längs über die Stadt, mehr als man bis sieben Uhr morgens wirklich besuchen kann.

Und es gab sogar eigenes Absperrband... ;-) (Eine "Nuit blanche" ist keine weiße, sondern ganz prosaisch eine schlaflose Nacht.)

You can always spend your nights sleepless ("nuit blanche" means a sleepless night) in Paris, but the night from Saturday to Sunday was a specially organized one. There were art projects and installations all over the city, more than one could really visit untill seven a.m.

Zu den städtisch organisierten Projekten öffneten auch andere Institutionen mit mehr oder weniger künstlerischer Absicht ihre Pforten. Und da ich neugierig bin, besuchten wir zuerst die große Loge der Freimaurer in Paris, die ihr Haus (bzw. einen Teil davon) in dieser Nacht mit interessanten Führungen für ein allgemeines Publikum öffneten. Jetzt weiß ich, wie Freimaurertempel von innen aussehen. Wodurch sich Freimaurer letztlich von anderen, weniger geheimnisvollen Institutionen wie den Rotariern abheben ist mir nach wie vor nicht ganz klar. Aber jedem Tierchen sein Pläsierchen.

Kunst hatten sie zusätzlich ausgestellt, einmal von der Sorte "nicht mein Geschmack, aber ich glaube, es hat was" (Michel Levy), einmal von der Sorte "dekorativ ist es, aber ist es deswegen schon Kunst?" (Name habe ich vergessen.)

The event was organized by the city of Paris, but a lot of private institutions had opened their doors and organized something for that night, too. I took the chance to visit the "Grand Loge de Paris" of the freemasons. They had opened their building to the public for the first time and offered interesting guided tours. So now I know how that looks from the inside. What really distiguishes them from other a little less "secret" organisations like the Rotary Club did not become completly clear to me, but I guess it's sufficient if they know...

Oh, and they also had two artistic expositions, one was of the "not really my taste, but I think there is something in it" kind (Michel Levy) the other one was the "decorative, but does that automatically mean it's art?" type. (forgot the name of the artist)

After that we moved on to Cardinet, for a short glimpse of a video installations and another large art installation. It was... well... big.

The we decided to have the 22.00 dinner and taking the metro in direction of concorde, where a nearly normal Paris night was going on.

Nach den Freimaurern tappsten wir noch Richtung Cardinet und warfen dort ein paar unispirierte Blicke auf eine Videoinstallation (seit jeder mittelgute Heincomputer Videobearbeitung erlaubt, sieht man sich doch recht schnell satt) und eine andere große Kunstinstallation. Die war... naja, groß halt.

Also entschieden wir uns für das 22.00 Uhr Abendessen und nahmen dann die Metro Richtung Concorde wo uns der beinahe normal Pariser Nachtbetrieb erwartete.

In den Tuilerien wurde es dann feurig. (Die Digicam kann das leider nicht wirklich wiedergeben.) Feuertöpfe am Boden, auf gestellen und auch von einem Kran hängend in der Luft oder auf den Wasserbassins schwimmend. Sehr eindrucksvoll und stimmungsvoll.

Fire in the Tuileries. (I tried, but finally its beyond what my camera can do....) Burning pots on the floor, swimming on the water bassins and even in the air, hanging from a crane. Very impressiv and creating a really great feeling.

That was of course not all, we only saw a fraction of the things, there was a poetry slam in front of the Comédie-Française, big screens with light installastions on the Place du Palais Royal, another video projection on the outer walls of St Eustache,... and what I really liked was the computer light and sound concert inside the church St. Merry. That was something extremely impressive.

Wir haben natürlich nur einen Bruchteil aller Aktionen gesehen, es gab poetry slam vor der Comédie-Française, große Bildschirme mit Lichtinstallationen auf der Place du Palais Royal, eine andere Videoprojektion an die Außenwend der Kirche St. Eustache... und was mir wirklich gut gefallen hat, war das Computergraphik Licht und Ton Konzert (ein passenderer Name fällt mir nicht ein) in der Kirche St Merry. Das war etwas wirklich eindrucksvolles, was ich zu gerne mal wieder sehen würde.

Naja, irgendwann in den frühen Morgenstunden sind wir dann doch mit schmerzenden Füßen ins Bett gekippt. Den was wir bei der Planung übersehen hatten: Unser Zug ging bereits Montag Mittag und wir mußten zeitig aufstehen, um nicht nur zu packen, sondern die Wohnung auch wieder zu putzen und auf Vordermann zu bringen, für die nächsten Gäste... :o)

Finally we went home. Bevor 7 a.m. But late enough to be tired the next day. What was not part of our planning: Our train on Sunday left at noon. And before we did not only have to pack our things, we also had to clean the appartment, ready for the guests that will be coming next week... :o)

Anything else in Paris? Oh, I think the Prêt-à-Porter fashion shows were going on, too. (The time of the year when you can see in Paris indeed all that fancy dressed people whom The Sartorialist likes to photograph....) We were stumbling over people queueing up in front of the grand Palais, when we were going form the "Design contre design" exhibition over the Seine to dinner.

Noch was los in Paris? Ach ja, ich glaube es waren Prêt-à-Porter Schauen. (Die Zeit, zu der man in Paris tatsächlich gehäuft Leute in hyperschicken Sachen rumlaufen sieht, wie der Sartorialist sie gerne photographiert...) Wir stolperten da über so eine anstehende Menschenmenge vor dem Grand Palais, als wir nach der "Design contre design" Ausstellung über die Seine Richtung Abendessen liefen.

Sommer in Paris

Bezüglich des Wetters glich der diesjährige Pariser Sommer unserem durchaus... Regen, Regen, Regen. Zumindest bis zum letzten Wochenende, als er nach französischen Maßstäben allerdings schon so gut wie vorbei war.

In Bezug auf das Wetter hatten wir bei unserem Besuch also großes Glück.

Allerdings hat der Pariser Sommer auch ein paar Besonderheiten, über die ich auch ein wenig erzählen will.

As far as the weather is concerned summer in Paris was (after our friends) like our summer here: rain, rain, rain. And it wasn't even warm rain... So when we went there last weekend we were really extremely lucky with the weather.

But summer in Paris has some... particularity... I'm gonna tell about today.

Basically... in summer Paris is closed.

Visitor usually don't believe it, until they're there... but it's true. After the fête nationale (July 14th) everybody goes to holiday. Usually to one of the many coastal regions of France and of course all together in their cars on the same motorways, the same day.... And those who don't leave in July will leave in August.

What rests in Paris are tourists and waiters. And those who don't have the money to go away. And a few other people who have to work. But the streets are remarkably empty, compared to the rest of the year. (The tourists can't fill the gap, they are there the whole year round...)

And as there is no one left... shops and restaurants will also close in August. The supermarkets may open later or close earlier, on the markets half of the normal greengrocers aren't there either. Also some public service my just be closed. So if you find an open restaurant in August you can be nearly sure it's a very touristic place. (And food might be expensive and not so glorious.) The exeptions of that rule exist, but not easy to find.

Was Besucher meist für einen schlechten Scherz halten: Paris schließt im Sommer.

Nach dem Nationalfeiertag am 14. Juli begeben sich alle geschlossen (am selben Tag und auf der selben Autobahn...) an irgendeinen Strand. Und wer es im Juli nicht schafft, der fährt aber allerspätestens im August.

Zurück in Paris bleiben Touristen und Kellner. Und die bedauernswerten, denen das Geld für den Urlaub fehlt. Und noch ein paar andere bemitleidenswerte Gestalten, die aus anderen Gründen arbeiten müssen.

Aber die Straßen sind spürbar leerer als den Rest des Jahres. Die Touristen können die Lücke nicht füllen, die sind das ganze Jahr da. Im Sommer fehlen nur die Touristen.

Und niemand mehr da ist (oder niemand, der in Pariser Augen zählt) schließen auch Geschäfte und Restaurants. Oft für einen ganzen Monat. Supermärkte verkürzen ihre Öffnungszeiten, auf den Märkten fehlt die Hälfte der üblichen Händler... auch öffentliche Dienstleistungen finden teilweise einfach nicht statt.

Wenn man also im August ein offenes Restaurant findet, dann ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit recht hoch, daß es eine ziemliche Touristenfalle ist, wo die Preise eher hoch, die Qualität des Essens eher überschaubar ist. Natürlich gibt es Ausnahmen von dieser Regel, aber sie zu finden erfordert Erfahrung.

Doch hat der Pariser Sommer auch ein paar Vorteile: Es gibt leckeres Eis, eine recht neue Mode, daß man in der Innenstadt an vielen Ecken italienisches Eis findet. (Teurer als in Deutschland, aber alle werben damit, daß sie nur mit natürlichen Zutaten und ohne Farb- oder Aromastoffe arbeiten. Und so schmeckt es auch... unvergleichlich!)

Und.. die Parkplätze am Straßenrand sind im August kostenlos! Und dann passierte auch noch das Wunder, daß wir tatsächlich direkt gegenüber unserer Haustür einen fanden. (Der blaue ist unserer.) Das muß natürlich dokumentiert werden, denn wer weiß, wann das wieder vorkommt. Jedenfalls schon mal ein guter Beginn unseres Wochenendes...

(Kleiner Nachteil dieses Platzes direkt vor der Eisdiele war, daß unsere Motorhaube ein gerne genommener Sitzplatz beim Eis essen wurde. Aber wer sich über so was aufregt, sollte sein Auto auf keinen Fall mit nach Paris nehmen...)

So Paris appears to be a place not to be in summer... Wrong, there are advantages, too. One is the great icecream. A quite recent trend, I have to admitt. It's only about three years, that you find excellent italian ice cream at nearly every corner. (In the center of Paris, at least.) Not cheap, especialle when one is used to German prices, but of really very, very good qualitiy. Without artificial colours or flavors.

Next advantage: Parking on the streets is free in August! And when we arrived we directely found a parking just over the street from the house our appartment is in! A small wonder but an excellent start into a summer weekend in Paris. I took a picture to remember that occasion. The blue car is ours... ;-)

(The small disadvantage in parking directely in front of the "gelateria" we discovered over the next days: People liked to sit on the front of our car while they were eating their ice-cream. But if you want a 100% scratchfree car, don't bring it to Paris....)

We arrived Friday night and Saturday we had to do some shopping. Shopping in fabric-stores. To bei precise. I convinced my husband that the IKEA-chairs with their grey seats hat a neutral but not pleasant look. And that we wanted to put something more colourful over it. :o)

So first we went to Toto, where I picked some Toile de Jouy for a competition I'll probably not have the time to take part, but if I would be ultra-annoyed not having the fabric. And there was another red home-dec fabric with a kind of "alpine" folcloristic print that somehow jumped over my muttering darling directely in my bag. :o

As we didn't find anything for our chairs we had to walk over to Deballage St Pierre. Is that just my impression or did they reduce the fabric for clothes and have more home dec now? Well, for that days purpose it suited us fine. And we found some colourfull stripes. (We haven't put them on the chairs yet, but I think I will like it more than the dark grey they have now.)

Freitag waren wir in Paris angekommen und Samstag mußten wir dann erst mal Einkaufen, Stoffe kaufen, um genau zu sein. Ich hatte mein Herzblatt davon überzeugt, daß die dunkelgraue Sitzfläche unserer IKEA-Stühle kein so schöner Anblick ist und daß wir da was Netteres drauf haben wollen... :o)

Zuerst ging es zu Toto, wo ich ein bißchen Toile de Jouy gekauft habe. Ich habe da eine Idee für den Kissenwettbewerb. Ich werde fast sicher keine Zeit haben, diese umzusetzen, aber falls doch, wäre ich megasauer, den Stoff dann nicht zu haben. Und dann war da noch so ein netter folkloristisch-alpenländisch angehauchter Druck in rot, der irgendwie über meinen Schatz drüber direkt in meine Tasche gehüpft ist...

Für unsere Stühle hatten wir allerdings immer noch nichts, also ging es noch zur Deballage St Pierre. Wenn ich das richtig sehe, dann haben sie die Bekleidungsstoffe reduziert und die Möbel-, Vorhang-, und Heimtextilien(Stoffe) abteilung vergrößert? Naja, kam unseren Wünschen an diesem Tag zu gute. Wir haben jetzt bunte Streifen für die Stühle. Mal sehen, wie das aussehen wird, wenn sie auch drauf sind.

Sonntag gingen wir nach dem Frühstück erst mal auf unseren Lieblingsmarkt Auguste Blanqui. (Ich glaube, der hat einen eigenen Eintrag verdient, unter Shopping....) "Unser" Käsestand war da und beim Obsthändler fand ich zwei kleine, reife Flugannanas für 3 EUR! Geschenkt, würde ich sagen...

Und was ist das perfekte Vergnügen für einen Sonntag-Sommer-Nachmittag? Na klar, in den Park gehen. Der Parc André Citroën ist einer der neueren Pariser Parks und definitiv einer meiner Lieblingslocations für einen warmen Nachmittag.

Was ich dort besonders mag, ist, daß eigentlich für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei ist. Eine große, sonnige Liegewiese, aber auch viele geplflanzte Ecken und Winkel, in denen man den Eindruck hat, irgendwo in der Natur zu sitzen und die vielen Menschen, die auch da sind, gar nicht so bemerkt. Außerdem ist es auch bei Hitze noch relativ kühl, weil von der Seine her fast immer ein leichter Luftzug spürbar ist. Wie das Bild zeigt, kann man sich natürlich auch im Wasser abkühlen.

Leider hatte ich meinen Laptop dabei und mußte zuerst ein wenig arbeiten, aber dann konnte ich den Nachmittag ausklingen lassen. Und was wäre perfekter, als im Parc André Citroën in Schatten zu liegen und dabei Léo Malets "Les eaux troubles de Javel" zu lesen? (Das Buch spielt nämlich genau in dieser Gegend von Paris, allerdings zu einer Zeit, als da noch kein Park, sondern eine Autofabrik war.)

Summer-Sundays also have their special pleasures in Paris. After breakfast we went to our favourit market along the boulevard Auguste Blanqui. And we were really lucky, our usual cheese merchant was not on holiday! And I got two really ripe ananas für three euros. Depending on where you live that may not be something special for you, but in Germany you hardly ever get really ripe ananas. Usually they come "green" and sort of get "ripended" artificially. Only this makes a huge difference in taste! Mearly like two different kind of fruit. (And if you find ripe ones they cost around 8-10 EUR one. Just to give you an idea of my happiness. Because ten euros is not really affordable... but three definitely is!)

And the perfect place for a Sunday afternoon is a park. We decided for a rather modern park, the Parc André Citroën, one of my favourite parks.

This one is a really great place to be in summer. You can lay on a big lawn in the sun or you get yourself a rather calm spot, surrounded by plants. Where you can nearly forget, that you are surrounded by a huge amount of other people, because all that greenery (don't ask me what plants... I'm not good at gardening. Plants are plants.) is planted so smartly, that it creates a lot of smaller an rather hidden places. And as the park opens to the Seine, there is even on hot days always a light breeze, to cool you. If you prefere not to jump in the fountain...

Well, I did not jump into the water, I had my laptop with me and had to start the afternoon with a bit of working. But I could end it, laying in the shadow and reading "Les eaux troubles de Javel" from Léo Malet. (The story takes place in exactly that part of Paris. Only 50 years ago, when there was not parc, but a factory for cars.) So, evidently... we had a perfect weekend in Paris. ;-)

(In case your French might not be so good: The sign says, that it is forbidden to be in the fountain... :o)

Ach ja, für den Fall, daß euer Französisch etwas eingerostet ist... das Schild sagt, daß der Aufenthalt im Brunnen verboten ist... :o)

Paris and me

"So, you live in Paris intermittently?"

Very good question, Isabelle... do I?

Maybe... I'm gonna tell the whole story, if somebody is interested. If not... stop reading and wait for the next post. :o)

The first time I came to Paris was in 1998 on our honeymoon. (After five days of cycling in Burgundy and then, escaping the rain, another week in the Limousin.) It wasn't more than some hours to see Notre Dame and the Seine, because the main purpose of our visit was finding an appartment around Orsay (a bit south of Paris) and preparing our move there.

My husband then moved there in September (as a PostDoc), I followed end of November, because I had to "hand over" my clients to another therapist. We started sight seeing in Paris on Sundays.

One day in December I went to Paris all alone for the first time. I took the RER B and got out at St. Michel-Notre Dame. The moment I stepped out in the daylight the yellow winter sun was shining, I was surrounded by a crowd of busy people... and felt just as if I'd belong there. As if I was at home.

So my husband and I do not only share the love for each other, but also for Paris.

When we had to leave in 2000 to start working in the "real world" (for my husband after years in the academic world) and "working again" (for me after two years of housewife with lots of time to explore Paris) we settled in the western part of Germany. Close enough to Paris to come back as often as possible. (The Thalys train makes it in less than four hours.)

And that's what we are doing since then. And spending a lot of money in chep hotels. (Our choice has always been "more nights and less comfort" for the same money. ;-) )

Until my husbands grandma died and left him a small house in Bavaria. Which we sold to buy an even smaller studio in Paris last year (rest of the apparment belongs to the bank... Paris is really, really expensive). (In the Marais, just some steps from BHV and Hotel de Ville.)

Since then we feel at least at home there. Even if we sometimes rent it, its our place. We also do a lot of shopping in Paris, because I still know shopping facilities in Paris better than here in my German town. And some things are just more to my taste in France than in Germany. (Shoes, for example. And of course cheese. :-)) Still I'm not sure, whether we can be considered as "living" in Paris...? We spend a lot of time there (last year about two months in total for me, a little less for my husband - I an not empoyed so I can load my work on my laptop and off I am...), on the other side... we don't work there. So we have, of course, not a real "normal" Paris life. On the other side... we have a French bank-account and we have the most important thing of all: "Facture EDF", the electricity bill... (any foreigner ever been in the cycle of needing an appartment and hence having an electricity bill to get a bank account and needing a bank account to get french cheque-book to get an apprtment knows what I'm talking about... ;-) )

Anyhow... I love it. :-)

Gute Frage... tue ich das?

Vielleicht ein guter Anlaß, mal meine ganze Paris-Geschichte zu erzählen. Für die, die es wissen wollen. Der Rest bricht einfach hier ab und wartet aufs nächste Post. ;-)

Das erste Mal kam ich 1998 nach Paris, auf unserer Hochzeitsreise. Damals reichte es allerdings nur zu einem Abend Kurzbesichtigung von Notre Dame und einer Pizza im Quartier Latin. Denn der Hauptgrund für den Teil der Reise war Wohnungssuche. Mein Herzblatt hatte eine Stelle als Postdoc in Orsay, etwas südlich von Paris. Die trat er im September auch an und ich kam Ende November nach, nachdem ich meine Klienten an meine Nachfolgerin übergeben hatte.

Im Dezember fingen wir dann an den Wochenenden an, Paris zu besichtigen.

An einem Dezembertag fuhr ich das erste Mal alleine ohne meinen Mann nach Paris. Ich stieg an der RER-Station St.Michel-Notre Dame aus und als ich in das gelbe Licht einer tiefstehenden Wintersonne hinaustrat, umgeben von geschäftigen Menschen auf dem Bürgersteig stand, hatte ich plötzlich das Gefühl, angekommen zu sein. Hier hin zu gehören.

Und so verbindet mein Herzblatt und mich nicht nur die Liebe zueinander, sondern auch die Liebe zu Paris.

2000 kehrten wir nach Deutschland zurück, ins "richtige" Arbeitsleben zurück, allerdings so westlich und nahe an Paris wie möglich. (Dank Thalys weniger als vier Stunden.) Und wir kamen wieder und immer wieder, gaben viel Geld für billige Hotels aus. (Letztlich wenn wir die Wahl hatten... dann war es immer das billigere Zimmer und dafür eine Nacht mehr. Oder zwei... *g*)

Bis die Großmutter meines Mannes starb. Oma ihr klein Häuschen wurde verkauft und dafür gab es ein noch kleineres Zimmer in Paris. (Den Rest gab die Bank... Immoblienpreise in Paris sind richtig, richtig teuer... Daß die Wohnung im Marais liegt, nicht weit vom Hotel de Ville entfernt, macht die Sache nicht besser.)

Seither fühlen wir uns dort zu Hause. Auch wenn wir das Appartment auch vermieten, es ist unsere Wohnung. Ich kenne auch nach wie vor die Einkaufsmöglichkeiten in Paris besser als hier in Deutschland, so machen wir eine Menge Einkäufe dort. Trotzdem.. ich binmir nicht sicher, ob das als "in Paris leben" zählt. Wir verbringen viel Zeit dort. Auf der anderen Seite ist es für uns immer Freizeit. wir arbeiten nicht dort, diesen Teil des Pariser Alltagslebens teilen wir nicht... aber wir haben ein französisches Bankkonto und, das wichtigste von allem, eine Stromrechnung. (Jeder Ausländer in Frankreich, der schon einmal den Teufelskreis aus ich brauche eine Wohnung, um an eine Stromrechnung und damit auch an ein Bankkonto zu kommen und ich brauche ein Bankkonto um französische Schecks zu haben und damit die Kaution für eine Wohnung bezahlen zu können kennen gelernt hat, weiß wovon ich rede... :o) )

Doch wie auch immer... ich liebe es!

Parken in Paris

Es gibt ja Leute, die der Ansicht sind, in Paris Auto zu fahren wäre schwierig: Viel Verkehr, mehrspurige Kreisverkehre, die nicht mal eindeutige Spurmakierungen haben (wo sechs Spuren vorgesehen sind haben locker zehn Autos nebeneinander Platz...), Einbahnstraßen und die oftmal phantasievolle Interpretation der Verkehrsregeln durch die einheimischen Fahrer.... dazu noch eine Portion Ortsunkenntnis... das macht vielen Angst.

(Nicht ganz zu Unrecht, wenn man auf unbeschädigten Lack großen Wert legt. Der Rest ist Gewöhnung... )

Dabei ist das Fahren noch die einfachere Übung für einen Autobesitzer in Paris.

Spannender ist die Frage, was eigentlich kommt, nachdem man den Motor abgestellt hat... :o) Ein Smart paßt tatsächlich in die kleinste Lücke, aber das Durchschnittsauto ist größer.

Wohin also mit dem Auto, wenn man in Paris angekommen ist?

(Meine Empfehlung ist ja generell, mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln anzureisen... aber manchmal muß oder will man den eigenen PKW wählen.)

Der Hotelparkplatz ist eine gute Idee. So das Hotel einen hat. Auch bei teureren Hotels ist das in Paris keineswegs üblich und schon gar nicht für jedes Zimmer einen. Der Parkplatz (wenn es ihn gibt) sollte also bei der Buchung schon mitgebucht werden. Er ist auch in der Regel nicht im Zimmerpreis enthalten. ("Service" bedeutet nur, daß eine Sache möglich ist. Nicht daß sie kostenlos ist.) Ein großer Vorteil dieser Lösung ist auf alle Fälle, daß man das Gepäck nicht sehr weit tragen muß.

Dann gibt es natürlich Parkhäuser bzw. Tiefgaragen. Auch in der Pariser Innenstadt sind diese recht reichlich vorhanden. Für einen Tag parken dort muß man allerdings mit Preisen bis zu 34 EUR/Tag rechnen. (Das ist das teuerste, das ich bislang gefunden habe) Um die 25 EUR sollte man pro Tag im Budget auf alle Fälle veranschlagen.

Was es, besonders in den inneren Arrondissements nicht gibt, sind kostenlose Parkplätze am Straßenrand. Und auch keine, auf denen mal länger stehen bleiben dürfte. Zumindest nicht, wenn man keinen Anwohnerparkausweis besitzt. (Zahlen muß man auch dann, aber man darf länger stehen bleiben. So man einen freien Platz gefunden hat.) Samstags und Sonntags sind die Parkplätze dann zwar kostenfrei... aber eben belegt.

Am Stadtrand von Paris gibt es eher mal noch kostenlose Straßenparkplätze, aber da auf einen Freien zu rechnen ist mehr als optimistisch. Und je enger die Gasse, desto größer die Chance, Kratzer im Lack zu gewinnen oder einen Außenspiegel zu verlieren. (Dellen oder Kratzer im Lack erzeugen bei einem französischen Autofahrer nicht mal ein schlechtes Gewissen... die gehören in seinem Weltbild zur Standardausstattung eines Autos dazu.)

Wobei das Auto auf einem "payant" Parkplatz an der Straße abgestellt nicht deutlich sicherer steht. Bewacht sind diese Parkplätze dennoch nicht. Außer durch die städtische Parküberwachun, was mit einem Strafzettel quittiert wird.

Allerdings... die Strafzettel sind nicht teurer als ein Tag im Parkhaus. Bewegt man sich etwas von der "inneren Innenstadt" weg sogar günstiger. (Ab 11 EUR ist man dabei.) Und so lange man tatsächlich auf einem legalen Parkplatz steht und auch niemanden behindert... wird auch nicht abgeschleppt. :o)

Wandgarten

Platz für einen Garten ist immer, zumindest wenn es nach Patrick Blanc geht.

Der Biologe begrünt nämlich Wände. Und da in Paris in der Tat Bodenfläche teuer ist und so eine bewachsene Wand gleichzeitig einen faszinierenden Blickfang darstellt, hat sich auch der BHV zur Eröffnung des neuen "Männerkaufhauses" eine gegönnt.

Und wir hatten, als wir die Bauarbeiten sahen, noch gedacht "Komisch, sieht aus, als würden die da was pflanzen. Aber an die Wand...??"

Schön geworden!

Könnte man in anderen Städten doch auch machen, oder? ;)
