We have pants! (Pants fitting shell, part 10)

Berechtigterweise tauchte kürzlich auch mal die Frage auf, was denn aus der Hose von Frau mhs geworden ist.

Nun, eine Hose!

Der Schnitt wurde das erste Mal auf einen tragbaren Stoff übertragen. Dabei hat Frau mhs die Beine von der Hüfte bis zum Knöchel etwas erweitert, weil die Fitting Shell am Knöchel doch etwas arg schmal ist. Taschen hat die Hose noch keine, aber ein korrekter Hosenschlitz vorne ist schon dran. Auf dem Bild ist nur der Bund noch nicht endgültig, den haben wir angesteckt, um die Bundhöhe an der Hose zu bestimmen.

Someone wanted to know some time ago what happend to the pants fitting process of Frau mhs.

Well..... pants did happen!

She used the pattern now on a wearable fabric. She altered the fitting shell a bit, making the legs wider from hipline to the ankles (the fitting shell is quite narrow on the bottom). There are no pockets yet, but she constructed a front closure. On the pic the waistband isn't sewn yet, only pinned, to determine the right heith on the pants.

Wir sind uns beide einig, das ist die bisher bestpassendste Hose, die sie seit Jahren hatte!

Zumindest so lange sie sich nicht bewegt.

Beim Laufen spannt nämlich der Stoff am Oberschenkel und wirft Falten. Mal sehen, ob wir das durch zugeben am Vorderteil an der inneren Beinnaht beheben können. In den Büchern steht zu diesem Problem nämlich teilweise, daß man die Schrittnaht verändern müßte.

Was wir ganz sicher nicht tun werden, denn die muß so aussehen, damit sie an Frau mhs paßt.

Aber wenn noch jemand Vorschläge hat, wie man dem Problem beikommen kann OHNE die Schrittnaht zu verändern.... immer her damit!

(Und ein bißchen länger muß die Hose noch werden....)

At least as long as she does not move.

Because when she walks the pants are to tight on thigh-level and make ugly wrinkles. We hope this can be fixed by adding to the inner leg seam of the front pant. Some of the books suggest to alter the crotch seam, which is definitely not an option. Because is took us some time to find the right form of the crotch seam to fit the body of Frau mhs.

Any suggestions what to change WITHOUT touching the crotch seam? We'd love to hear it!

(And the legs will have to be lengthened again a bit... but that's really a minor problem.)

Darts turned into Princess Seams

Erster Punkt bei meinem Kleid ist also der passende Schnitt. Da ich einen Kleidschnitt mit Abnähern habe, den ich schon mal (zumindest halbwegs) angepasst habe, ist es einfacher den in Teilungsnähte umzubauen als einen neuen anzupassen. (Hoffe ich zumindest.) Außerdem habe ich den Vogue Schnit mit den Abnähern schon, einen anderen müßte ich erst kaufen.

First thing I need for the dress project is the pattern. I already have the pattern of a dress with darts which I have altered to fit (more or less) some time ago. So it's easier to modify the pattern I have instead of starting again with an new pattern. (At least this is the plan.) Another advantage is that the Vogue pattern is already here, another one I would have to buy.

Hier ist der Vorderteilschnitt. Ich habe versucht, den Brustabnäher, den Taillenabnäher und den Brustpunkt einzuzeichnen.

Meine Teilungsnaht soll in die Schulter verlaufen, also ziehe ich eine Linie von dem Taillenpunkt des Abnähers durch den Brustpunkt zur Schulter. Bei diesem Schnitt kann ich das gut durch eine gerade Linie machen, wie das aufgelegte Lineal zeigt.

This is half my front pattern. I tried to mark both darts and the breast point in black.

I want my seam to go from the shoulder to the waist, so I'm connecting the waistpoint of the dart and the breastpoint and make it go into the shoulderseam. For this pattern I can do this with a straight line as the ruler shows.

Dann lege ich eine neue Folie auf und zeichne die Seitennaht des Schnittes nach und dann die Linie von der Schulter, durch den Brustpunkt und entlang der linken Kante des Abnähers.

An der Seitennaht habe ich die Markierungen übernommen, am ehemaligen Abnäher habe ich die Taille und die beiden Endpunkte markiert, sowie einen weiteren Punkt.

Schon habe ich ein seitliches Vorderteil. (Fast, der Abnäher muß ja noch weg.) Die Nahtzugabe an der neuen Teilungsnaht nicht vergessen...

I'm layering a new plastic sheet over my existing pattern. I'm copying the side- and a part of the soulderseam and I'm drawing a new line from shoulder through bust point and then along the left side of the vertical dart.

At the side seams I also copied the notches, on my new princess seam I make new marks on the line that was the vertical dart before.

The result is a front side pattern. (Nearly. there is still one dart to be removed.) And not forgetting to mark a seam allowance...

Das mittlere Vorderteil und die Teilungsnähte im Rücken werden analog gearbeitet. Die Längsabnäher dienen als Anhaltspunkt für die Teilnungsnaht.

The middle front and the seams in the back are constructed the same way. The vertical darts help to decide where to place the seams.

Jetzt muß der Brustabnäher aber noch raus, das ist auch nicht schwer.

Der Abnäher wird eingeschnitten, durch die Abnäherspitze durch bis auf die Teilungsnaht. (Wir erinnern uns, an dieser Stelle läuft die Naht genau durch den Brustpunkt, auf den kommt es an.)

Only there is still the dart to be removed, which is easy.

I do cut the dart through the point of the dart to the seam. (We remember, the seam goes through the bust point which is the important point.

Schließlich wird der Abnäher einfach weggefaltet.

Die beiden roten Linien werden aufeinander gelegt und das ganze festgeklebt.

Dadurch ergibt sich auch automatisch eine Rundung der Teilungsnaht.

Finally the dart gets folded away.

Just overlap the dart, lining up the red lines. (Then tape it in place.)

So the seam gets the right curve automatically.

Bevor ich meinen Stoff zuschneide nähe ich natürlich ein Probemodell aus meinem bewährten Streifenstoff. :o

Ein paar Änderungen sind danach noch nötig, aber letztlich ging es schneller als einen neuen Schnitt anzupassen.

Some alterations were needed after that, but it was much quicker than fitting a new pattern.

Jetzt haben wir eine ganz gut angepasste Hosenbasis, aber das macht ja nun noch keine Hose. Also müssen die Änderungen wieder zurück auf das Schnittmuster.

Now we have a nicely fitting shell, but that doesn't make a pair of pants. So all we altered had to go back to the pattern.

Das letzte Mal haben wir uns bei Frau mhs getroffen, die hat einen größeren Tisch als ich . Das war praktisch.

Der Übertrag ist nicht schwierig. Ich habe zuerst die Nähte auf dem Stoff mit einem Filzstift nachgemalt, bevor Frau mhs die Hose wieder aufgetrennt hat.

Danach wird das Stoffteil auf den Tisch gelegt (eigentlich sollte man es vorher bügeln, aber das Bügeleisen war bei den Malerarbeiten wenige Tage vorher in einer Kiste gelandet und noch nicht wieder aufgetaucht) und der Folienschnitt kommt drüber.

Ich achte darauf, daß der Fadenlauf und die anderen Kennlinien, die ja auf dem Stoff und auf dem Schnitt eingezeichnet sind, genau übereinander liegen. Auf dem Bild zeichne ich gerade die Nahtlinien vom Stoff auf der Folie nach. Das geht mit Folie natürlich besser als mit Papier.

Last time we met at Frau mhs place, her table is bigger than mine, that is quite useful.

It's not difficult to mark the changes back to the pattern. I used a felttip to mark along all seamlines on the fabric, then Frau mhs ripped all seams.

After that the fabric should be pressed, but Frau mhs had her flat repainted and the iron was somewhere in a box and not available yet. So we just laid the fabric flat on the table and but the pattern over it.

Now it's important that the grain and all other marks and marked lines I have on the pattern and on the fabric are properly aligned. After that I just need a pencil for plastic sheets and I mark our new seamlines on the pattern. That is why I prefer transparent plastic foil.

Kerstin, du wolltest die neue Schrittkurve sehen... hier ist sie. Rot sind die neuen, "richtigen" Linien.

Auffällig ist, daß die Kreuznaht viel tiefer legt, als der ursprüngliche Schritt, sogar unterhalb der geplanten Oberschenkellinie. Laut der Vogue- Anleitung hätten wir natürlich noch mehr Länge einfügen können, aber nur hinten und außerdem wäre die Taille dann irgendwann über den Busen gerutscht...

Also kam die Änderung nach Palmer/Pletsch zum Tragen, auch die Form der Schrittkurve hat sich deutlich verändert.

That is our new back center seam, the red line.

The crotch line now is way lower than the original one, even lower that the thigh line. According to the Vogue instructions we could have added more length to make the crotch lower, but the front was okay, it was only the back that was wrong.

So that was the moment when we used the Palmer/Pletsch method, that also changed the shape of the crotch seam.

Ein Stück Leinen wartet schon darauf, eine Hose zu werden. Wir sind beide gespannt...

I think she's got it! (Pants fitting shell, part 8)

Nachdem wir noch kräftig mit der Form der Schrittnaht gespielt haben war es so weit, die Hose kann in Position gebracht werden, so daß die Hüftlinie auch über der Hüfte verläuft. Und schon sind die Falten hinten weg.

Da die Hose am Oberschenkel vorne noch etwas eng war (zumindest beim Bewegen) haben wir an der inneren Schrittnaht noch einiges zugegeben, mehr an der Vorderhose als an der Hinterhose. (Denn diese Änderung war dann schön in "Pants for any body" beschrieben."

After we altered the shape of the back crotch line several times it is done: The pants can be pulled up into a position where the hipline matches the hip all around and voilà, the wrinkles are gone!

The pants then were still a bit tight on the front thighs so we added width on the inner leg seam, more on the front. (This alteration is described in "Pants for any body")

Bleiben dann nur noch kleinere (?) Probleme: die endgültige Bundlinie bestimmen und eine Möglichkeit zu finden, den Bund so zu arbeiten, daß die Hose auch an dieser Stelle bleibt. (Falls es außer dem Gebrauch von Hosenträgern eine solche gibt...)

Frau mhs hat wohl recht, der entscheidende Punkt für diese Anpassung waren vermutlich nicht die aufwendigen Schritte aus der Vogue Fitting Shell (oder nicht nur), sondern daß die Probehose eine Markierung für die Hüftlinie hatte. So konnten wir immer überprüfen, wo die Hose hin muß. Und die letzten Schritte dann mit der "Pants for any body" Methode durchführen. Die wir früher schon erfolglos angewandt hatten, aber vermutlich einfach nicht an der richtigen Stelle.

So there remain minor (?) problems: finding the desired position for the waistband and finding a technique to make that waistband in a way that it keeps the pants actually there. (If that technique exists other than using suspenders...)

I think Frau mhs is right when she states that the crucial point was not (or not only) all the way through the vogue fitting shell, but to have the hip line marked on the musslin. So we always could see where the pants were supposed to sit on the body. And then the steps from "Pants for any body", that we had tried on other patterns before and which had not worked then, could make the pattern work. Probably because we used those alterations then on the right spot this time.

Bevor wir uns wieder an die Hose machten, habe ich noch mal den Punkt kontrolliert, den ich beim letzten Mal etwas aus den Augen verloren hatte. Nämlich wo die Hüfte sitzt. Und da war das Ergebnis recht eindeutig, die Hose muß hinten tatsächlich noch weiter hoch, damit die Hüftlinie der Hose auch auf der Hüfte von Frau mhs sitzt.

Also haben wir die recht einmütigen Kommentare (vielen Dank noch einmal!) beherzigt und an der inneren Beinnaht oben noch einmal 2 cm zugegeben.

Wie das Bild zeigt, reicht das aber immer noch nicht.

Before we decided how to continue with the pant I checked something I had nearly lost out of sight the last time: the hip level. The result was quite clear, to get the pants on hip level we had to raise it even more in the back middle, to match the hipline of the pants with the hipline of Frau mhs.

The hints in the comment section (Thanks a lot!) were clear, so we did what was recommended, adding another 2cm to the back pants on crotch level.

This is still not enough, as the pic shows.

Doch jetzt habe die Falten eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit einer Abbildung aus Pants for any body. Da uns die Vogue Anleitung ja inzwischen völlig im Stich gelassen hat, habe ich Frau mhs überredet, doch in diese Richtung weiter zu machen. (Zugegebenermaßen einfach aus meiner Sicht, ich habe die Arbeit damit ja nicht.) Das bedeutet, die Schrittkurve am Hintern muß noch tiefer ausgeschnitten werden. Und eine etwas andere Form bekommen soll.

Jetzt kann ich auch nur die Daumen drücken, daß das funktioniert.

But now the wrinkles resemble those on one of the illustrations of Pants for any body. As the Vogue instructions are of no help any longer I convinced Frau mhs to go on with that. (I have to admit that it's easy for me, because she will have to do the work.) This means the crotch curve has to be cut deeper again. And the shape should change also.

I really do hope, that this brings the desired result!

What next? (Pants fitting shell, part 6)

Nach einer längeren Pause habe wir uns diese Woche wieder ma-sans Hose zugewandt.

Beim letzten Mal hatten wir ja eine neue Nahtlinie für die Schrittnaht bestimmt und sie hatte die Hose inzwischen so wieder zusammengenäht.

Nun, irgendwie sind die Falten zwar weniger geworden, aber die Hüftlinie verläuft immer noch etwas schräg.

This week we finally went on with ma-san's pants.

Last time we had tried to find a new seamline for the crotch seam and she meanwhile assembled the pants with the new crotchline.

Well... there are probably less wrinkles, but the hipline of the pants isn't straight yet. (You can see that the checks are not straight.)

Aber wenn man die Hose hinten hochzieht, so daß die Hüftlinie wieder gerade ist, dann verschwinden die Falten.

Dummerweise schneidet die Schrittnaht dann wieder ein, also muß sie wohl noch tiefer ausgeschnitten werden.

But if you pull the pants up in the middle back, the hipline is straight again and the wrinkles are gone, too.

But this makes the crotchseam to tight again. So we should sew even deeper...

Die Schrittnaht noch tiefer zu nähen macht es noch etwas besser, aber es bleiben Falten. Außerdem fängt die Hose an, vorne auch etwas seltsam auszusehen, weil die Schrittnaht auch vorne ein Stück an den neuen Verlauf angeglichen werden muß.

Zudem wird die Hose über dem Po etwas eng, denn es verschwindet ja eine Menge Stoff in der Schrittnaht.

Also geben wir an der Seitennaht der Hinterhose 2cm zu.

So we've sewn the crotch seam even deeper. This improves the situation, but wrinkles remain. Also the front of the pants start to look a bit strange, because we also had to change the front crotch seam a bit, to fit the changes on the back part.

Also the pants become a bit tight over the back, because sewing the crotch seam deeper and deeper takes away width.

Therefore we are adding 2cm to the side seams but only on the back of the trousers.

Und wieder bleiben Falten in der Hinterhose...

Wieder könnte man die Hose hinten so hoch ziehen, daß die Falten verschwinden, aber allmählich rutscht die Schrittlinie auf die Hüfte hoch... der Oberschenkel der Vorderhose wird immer enger. (Vor allem beim Bewegen.) Und die Schrittnaht hinten noch weiter ausschneiden?

Das Bild zeigt eine andere Variante: Die Hose runter ziehen. Auch das verbessert die Falten. Und der Oberschenkel paßt auch weitgehend wieder. Aber... es bleiben Falten.

Und nun? Irgendjemand eine Idee, was wir noch tun können? (Ich entschuldige mich für die schlechte Qualität, aber ich mußte ohne Blitz photographieren, denn mit Blitz waren die Falten nicht mehr sichtbar. Und es war schon dunkel...)

After those alterations there were still wrinkles...

We tried to pull up the pants even more, that made the fabric straight, but the crotchline was moving up, nearly on hip level. Also the front part of the pants got to tight on the thighs (only when moving). And should we really cut out the crotch line deeper again?

The pic shows what we tried then: pulling the pants down, not up. The wrinkles got better, also the thighs do fit again. But still... wrinkles on the back.

I am runnig out of ideas. What can we do? Any ideas anybody? (I apologize for the pic, but I had to take it without the flash, because the flashlight shows different wrinkels and it was already getting dark when we finished...)

Seitennaht raus, Kapuze weg

Getting rid of side seams and hood

Mit dieser Kombi habe ich vor etwa einem Jahr schon ein Baby (oder dessen Mutter) beglückt. Und da mal wieder ein neuer Erdenbüger zu begrüßen war, habe ich mir die Jackenschnitt noch mal vorgenommen. Allerdings mit einigen Änderungen.

Von diesem Shirt hatte ich noch genug Stoff übrig und da dieser Sweatshirtstoff auf beiden Seiten interessant aussieht, will ich die Jacke diesmal nicht füttern, sondern über eine Blende beide Stoffseiten zur Geltung bringen. Außerdem soll die Kapuze weg, so viel Stoff ist es nämlich nicht mehr.

Und weil ich nicht füttern will, soll auch die Seitennaht weg, dann muß ich mir nämlich auch keine Gedanken machen, wie ich die versäubere.

Auch wenn man großflächige Stickereien oder Applikationen umterbringen will oder ein Stoffmuster nicht unterbrechen will ist diese Änderung praktisch. Sie ist einfach, ich zeige, wie das geht. Und wie man selber einen Besatz zeichnet.

The jacket and pants on the pic above I did about one year ago for a baby. As another new baby arrived for another friend I decided to use the pattern of the jacket again. But with modifications.

I want to use the restover from this shirt, a sweatshirt knit which has two interesting sides and I want to show both of them. So I decided to make no lining, but use facings on the outside to emphasize both sides of the fabric. Also I don't want the hood, as there isn't enough fabric to make one.

No lining means all seams are visible. Eliminating the side seams of the jacket means one problem less. It is not a difficult operation I'll show you how to do this. And how to draw facings, another usefull an easy alteration. (Eliminating side seams can also be interesting, if you want to create a all over design, a large applique, an all over embroidery or if you do not want to disturb the print or pattern of your fabric.)

Der erste Schritt besteht darin, das Vorderteil und das Rückenteil nebeneinander zu legen.

Zu beachten sind nur zwei Dinge: der Fadenlauf von Vorderteil und Rückenteil müssen parallel sein (bei mir helfen die Linien im Laminat) und die Teile müssen unter dem Arm genau aneinanderliegen.

Jetzt muß man noch einen Blick auf die ursprüngliche Seitennaht werfen. Hier werden die beiden Teile oft nicht genau aufeinanderliegen. Ist ein Abstand dazwischen, wird die Jacke etwas weiter. (Will man das nicht, müßte man mit Abnähern gegenarbeiten, aber wenn man ein körpernahes, stark geformtes Kleidungsstück haben will, dann läßt man die Seitennähte besser gleich drin.) Überlappen sich die ursprünglichen Seitennähte wird die Jacke enger, dann muß man noch mal nachmessen, ob die Weite am Ende reicht.

In meinem Fall liegen die alten Seitennähte etwas auseinander, das paßt also. Eine Babyjacke hat ohnehin keinen so ausgefeilten Schnitt.

Die Schnitteile werden dann mit Tesafilm in dieser Position auf dem Boden fixiert.

First step is to position the patterns for front and back of the jacket next to each other. There are only two things you have to observe: the straight grain of both pattern pieces has to be parallel. And they have to touch exactly in the armpit.

Then check the original side seams. If there is a gap between them the jacket will be a bit larger. (If you don't want this you'll have to add shape with darts, but if you want a close fitting, very shaped garment then better keep the side seams.) If they overlap then measure, if the jacket is still wide enough.

In my case there is a gap, no problem. A baby jacket is not a very structured garment.

Then I use adhesive tape to attach the pattern pieces on the floor.

Dann kommt eine weitere Schicht Folie darüber, wird mit Klebeband festgeklebt und ich zeiche mein neues Schnitteil nach. Dabei habe ich hier auch gleich noch die vorderen Kanten neu geformt, einen runden Saum statt der relativ geraden Kante der ursprünglichen Jacke.

Wichtig ist hier, alle Paßzeichen zu übertragen und unter dem Arm ein neues Paßzeichen hinzuzufügen: Da wo die Schnitteile zusammengelegt wurden brauche ich jetzt ein Paßzeichen für die Ärmelnaht.

Then I'm adding a new layer of plastic sheet over the original pattern and attach it with some more adhesive tape to the floor. Now I can easily trace my new pattern, without side seams. And I reshaped the front opening, a bit more rounded than the original.

It is important to trace all marks and the grain. And to create a new mark in the armscye: The position where the original patterns did touch. Because that will have to match with the sleeve seam.

Fehlt nur noch die Blende, das geht auch ganz einfach. Erst mal kommt eine dritte Schicht Folie drüber.

Dann überlege ich mir, wie breit die Blende werden soll. In meinem Fall 4cm. Und ob sie eine weitere Nahtzugabe braucht oder offenkantig aufgenäht wird. (Bei mir ist letzteres der Fall.)

Danach zeichne ich von Halsauschnitt, die Vorderkante entlang, den Saum entlang bis zur hinteren Mitte eine Linie parallel zur Kante meines Schnitteils in 4cm Abstand. Und das gleiche passiert am Halsloch hinten. (Grüne Bereiche.) Beschriften nicht vergessen (Stoffbruch, Fadenlauf,...), schon fertig.

Last step are new facings. So I add a third layer of plastic. Then I decide how wide I want my facings to be (4cm) and if I want a seam allowance or not. (In my case not.)

Then I'm drawing a line parallel to front opening and hem, 4 cm distance to the seam line and the same for the back neckline. (Green areas in the pic.) Don't forget to note and mark everything important (what to cut on fold, grainline,...) and that's it.

Erste Anprobe oder Hosenanpassung mit System, Teil 5

Pants Fitting Shell Part 5

Frau mhs war fleißig und so konnten wir am Donnerstag die Hose mal als Ganzes anprobieren. Einen Verschluss hat sie vorne nicht, sie wird nur zugesteckt.

Das erste was uns bei der Anprobe auffiel war, daß das, was wir nach der letzten Anprobe an der Seitennaht zugegeben haben, als "Beutel" an der Seite abstand.

Außerdem ist es praktisch unmöglich, die Hose auf der Taille zu halten, wenn der Hosenbund knapp 4cm Zugabe hat. Das Konzept überzeugt mich nach wie vor nicht so recht...

Frau mhs finished the pants and we could check the fit. There is no front closure, you just pin it.

Last time we had, according to the instructions, let out a bit on the side seams. Well... this amount sticks out at the sides as little bags.

Also it is impossible to make the pants stay on the waist line, when the waistline ease is nearly 4 cm. This amount of ease does not really convince me...

Aber sonst sieht die Vorderseite gar nicht so schlecht aus für einen ersten Versuch. Die Hüftlinie ist gerade und parallel zum Boden und der Bauch paßt im Großen und Ganzen rein. An der Länge hatten wir ja viel zugegeben, das war aber tatsächlich nötig.

But apart from that, for a first fitting the front didn't look to bad. There is basically room for the tummy and the marked hipline on the pants is straight and parallel to the floor. And the legs have the right length, which still surprises us, because we had lengthened them quite a bit and Frau mhs is normally petite.

Die Rückseite hingegen.... das vertraute Bild mit den lustigen Falten und Schrägzügen. (Wie man die herausbekommt kommt in der Anleitung der fitting shell auch nicht vor.)

Außerdem fällt auf, daß die Pobacken sehr unterschiedlich sind. Links haben wir zu viel Stoff, rechts ist es eher knapp.

Aber wo der Schritt sitzt ist nicht festzustellen. Denn die Hose hält ja nicht in der Taille.

The back on the contrary... wrinkles and sagging as we know that. (And those wrinkles and folds ar not explained in the fitting shell.)

We also noticed, that Frau mhs back side is very asymmetrical. On the left there is to much fabric, the right side is a bit snug.

But we cannot find out where the crotch seam is positionned, because with 4 cm ease on the waist the pants do not stay up...

Also haben wir erst mal die Taille enger gesteckt, die beuteligen Zugaben von der "Halbanprobe" größtenteils wieder rausgenommen und dann die Rückseite noch mal genauer in Augenschein genommen.

An der Seitennaht sitzt die Hüftmarkierung noch da wo sie sein soll. Aber zur hinteren Mitte hin fällt sie ab. Und die Schrittnaht kneift, wenn man versucht, die Hose so hoch zu ziehen, daß die Hüftlinie gerade ist.

So we first took the waistband in to make the pants stay on the waist and we took out most of what we had added last time after the "one leg fitting". Then we took a closer look at the back.

At the fronts and on the side the hip line is on the hips and straight. But it goes down V-like to the back middle. And if I tried to pull the pants up, to make the hipline right, the crotch seam gets extremely... tight. Way to tight.

Vogue sagt, wenn die Schrittnaht zu hoch sitzt, dann soll man rundum einen Stoffstreifen einfügen. Etwa 2cm wären wohl nötig. Dadurch würde aber die Schrittnaht vorne viel zu tief, denn da paßt sie so wie sie ist. Außerdem würde die Hüftmarkierung dann nicht mehr auf der Hüfte sitzen, sondern 2 cm darunter.

Also muß man wohl die Kurve der Schrittnaht ändern.

Das sieht die Anleitung aber nur für vorne vor. Hinten kommt das nicht vor. So weit zur Theorie. Das Problem für die Praxis lautet: Wie also die richtige Kurve finden?

We studied the instructions with care just to find out that this fitting problem is just not there.

The instructions tell you to insert a strip of fabric, about 2cm. But this would make the hip line come to low on the body. And the crotch would be to low on the front, there the crotch heigth is quite right now.

So it is quite evident, that we have to alter the shape of the crotch seam.

Only the instructions tell you only how to do that on the front. Changing the shape on the back is evidently a non existing problem. In theory. Reality is somewhat different.... So how to find the right shape for the back crotch seam?

Ich habe dann letztlich an der angezogenen Hose die Schrittnaht etwa von der Kreuznaht bis weit über die Hüfte hinauf aufgetrennt. Und dann die Nahtzugabe Am Po immer weiter nach innen gebogen, bis die Hose so weit nach oben gezogen werden kann, daß die Hüftmarkierung parallel zum Boden ist.

Ob das funktioniert wird man sehen. Bis zu unserem nächsten Treffen wird Frau mhs diese neue Nahtlinie an beiden Hinterhosen markieren, wieder eine Stütznaht nähen und die Hose so neu zusammen nähen. Außerdem wird sie an den Seitennähten zugeben, denn die Hose verliert dadurch über dem Po natürlich an Weite. Zudem haben wir schon gesehen, daß an den Oberschenkeln auch noch etwas Weite fehlt.

Vermutlich werden wir uns erst am Gründonnerstag wieder sehen, so lange heißt es jetzt also Geduld zu haben.

Und ich werde morgen meine zweite Runde über die h&h drehen. *Aua* sagen meine Füßte... *g*

Finally I took the seam ripper and opened up the back middle seam from between the legs and up, until about halfway between hipline and waistline. Then I folded in the seam allowance step by step, until the pants could be moved high enough, to make the hipline on the pants straight, parallel to the floor.

We don't know whether this will be the solution. Frau mhs will use the fold as new seamline, will transfer it to the other side, make a staystitch and sew the seam. She will also let out the side seams, because the new back seam reduces the width over the bottom. Also we already could see that there also is not enough width for the thighs.

Our next meeting will be very probably Thursday before easter, so I'll have to be patient until then to see whether this was the solution.

Half-Fitting or Pants Fitting Shell Part 4

Wir sind ein wenig weitergekommen und als nächstes stand ein Schritt auf dem Programm, den ich recht ungewöhnlich finde. Eine halbe Hose wird anprobiert, also quasi ein Bein.

We made some progress on the pants. The next step was something quite strange for me. A fitting with one leg... half the pants.

Sinn dieser Anprobe ist, einmal den Umfang an Taille und Hüfte zu kontrollieren und zum anderen die Schrittnaht zu überprüfen.

Ich muß gestehen... das Konzept überzeugt mich nicht so ganz. Einmal ist es zumindest bei Menschen mit nicht ausgeprägter Taille nicht so einfach, die Hose mit dem Gummi in der Taille zu befestigen. Oder die Taille überhaupt wiederzufinden.

Und wie tief der Schritt ist, sieht man eigentlich auch nicht. Weiterhin ist es doch recht schwierig, die vordere und rückwärtige Mitte einer halben Hose an der richtigen Stelle zu positionieren.

I have to admit, that I am not convinced by this concept. It is, at least on people with a not very clear waist, not easy to attach the pants to the waist with the string. Or even find the waist to start with.

And then you do not really see well how deep the crotch is. Also it is not easy to attach the front and back middle on the right place on the body if you have only half a pant.

Da die Hose, obwohl sie laut den Maßen eher weit sein sollte, recht eng anlag, haben wir (wie die Anleitung vorgesehen) an der Seitennaht noch zwei Zentimeter rausgelassen. Und das meiste davon wieder zurückgenommen, weil dadurch vor allem eine Beule in der Seitennaht entstand.

Ich denke, was hier fehlt, wird wohl eher durch die Abnäher zugegeben werden müssen.

Was aber besonders spannend ist, ist die Rückansicht: Hier zeigt sich nämlich, daß das Hosenbein "hängt", genau wie wir das von anderen Versuchen kennen. Aber... da die Hüftlinie angezeichnet ist fällt auf, daß diese hinten abfällt. Zieht man die Hose so hoch, daß die Hüftlinie parallel zum Boden ist, verschwinden die Falten. Allerdings ist dann die Schrittnaht zu kurz.

Laut Anleitung sollte man jetzt einfach noch mal mit einem Stoffstück Länge einfügen. da die Länge der Seitennähte jedoch durchaus paßt und zudem der Schritt nur an der Hinterhose kneift, haben wir uns hier entschlossen, die Anleitung zu ignorieren und diesen Punkt später über die Form der Schrittnaht zu korrigieren.

According to the ease of the pattern and the measurements the pants should be quite wide. Which they were not. So we added 2cm via the side seams, as the instructions tell to do. Just to take out most of it in the next step, because this only created a bump on the side seam.

So what is missing there will probably have to be corrected by letting out the darts.

But what I found more interesting was the back view. Here we found (as we know that from other pants) the back leg sagging. But the marked hipline on the fabric shops, that this also is not parallel to the floor. If you pull the pants up, until the hipline is straight, the sagging disappears. Only then the crotch becomes uncomfortably tight.

The instruction tell to add length by inserting a straight piece of fabric. But the length of the side seam is okay, we do not need more fabric there. Also the front is fine, we only need more room on the back. So we decide to skip the fitting instructions here. We will (hopefully) correct that later via the shaping of the crotch seam.

Beim nächsten Mal haben wir dann hoffentlich eine ganze Hose zur Anprobe, dann werden wir sehen...

Next time we'll have (probably) the whole pants for the first fitting, then we'll see...

Pants fitting shell, part 3 (a very short story)

Da ich letzte Woche in Paris war, haben wir erst heute mit der Hose weitergemacht. Und auch nur wenig spannende Schritte, aber trotzdem steckt ja immer einiges an Arbeit drin. (Die Frau mhs gemacht hat.) Da ich aber weiß, daß einige hier den Fortschritt mit Spannung verfolgen, gibt es trotzdem eine kurze Zusammenfassung:

Der Stoff ist zugeschnitten und alle wichtigen Markeirungslinien sind teilweise mit dickem Filzstift aufgemalt, teilweise durchgeheftet, damit man sie bei der Anprobe dann auch auf der rechten Stoffseite sehen kann.

Das rechte Hosenbein ist von Hand zusammengeheftet. Frau mhs wird das dann noch mit der Maschine nachnähen, ausbügeln und den Bund aufsetzen. (Ich hoffe, ich denke dran, davon das nächste Mal Photos zu machen, denn der Bund wird nicht wie ein normaler Hosenbund angenäht.)

Außerdem muß die Schrittnaht zur ersten Anprobe vorbereitet werden, denn die erfolgt erst mal nur mit einem Hosenbein.

As I've been in Paris last week we only went on with the pants today. Nothing to thrilling happenned, but still there is quite some work in those steps. (Work for Frau mhs, nor for me.) But I know that some people are curious about the ongoing of this project, here a very short summary:

The pattern is finished and the fabric cut. Frau mhs will sew that with machine, she will press the seams and she will do the waistband. (I hope I think about making pics the next time, because the waistband is not sewn on as a normal waistband.)

Also the crotch seam has to be prepared for the first fitting, which will happen with one leg only.

Pants fitting shell, part 2

Weiberfasching haben Frau mhs und ich (und ihre Tochter) vergnüglich verbracht (oder so) nämlich indem wir an dem Schnitt weitergearbeitet haben. Sie war über die Woche fleißig gewesen und hatte das Schnittpapier sorgfältig gebügelt und dann auf Malerfolie übertragen.

Erster Punkt ist messen. Brav die Klamotten abgeworfen, die Schuhe aber anbehalten. Frau mhs ist mutig und hat mir erlaubt, ihre Figur als Silouhette hier zu zeigen. (Daß die Konturen so krakelig sind, hat mit meinen mangelnden Bildbearbeitungsfähigkeiten zu tun... aber die Grobrichtung sollte klar werden.) Wir haben einen Gummi um den Laib geknotet und erst mal etwas Gymnastik gemacht, um die Taille zu finden. Die Position ist jetzt höher als da wo sie sonst ihre Hose trägt, aber wir haben uns entschlossen, strikt nach Anleitung vorzugehen und die Taillenhöhe später zu verändern, wenn wir den Rest des Schnittes angepasst haben.

The Thursday of Carneval Frau mhs and I (and her daughter) had fun another way, we worked on the fitting shell. She had ironed the paper of the shell and had copied everything very carefully to plastic sheet.

First thing was measuring. So taking of the clothes, keeping on the shoes. Brave Frau mhs allows me to show her silouhette. (That the contours are a bit scrawly is due to my low abilities in image editing...) We knotted a string of elastic around her body and then made some gymnastics to allow the string to find her waist. The position now is much higher than where she likes to wear her pants, but we decided to work strictly after the instruction sheet. And we will alter that later, once the pants are fitted.

Die Anleitung zum Messen ist ausführlich und es war fast problemlos, dem zu folgen. Interessant fanden wir beide wie die Schrittlänge gemessen wird.

Schwierig waren zwei Punkte: Einmal der Hüftumfang. Frau mhs hat keine ausgeprägte Hüfte, von daher mußte ich mich beim Messen auf mein Gefühl verlassen. Der Abstand Taille-Hüfte den ich angenommen habe entsprach aber der Tabelle. Da lag ich wohl richtig.

Ansonsten entsprach nichts der Tabelle, was aber keine große Überraschung war. Wir hatten Größe 18 genommen und die Körpermaße oszillieren um die Standardtabelle herum, einige kleiner, die meisten größer. Überrascht hat uns, daß die Beine verlängert werden müssen, denn Frau mhs ist eigentlich etwas kleiner als der Schnitt vorsieht. Aber gut... diesmal ist unser Motto: Nicht denken, die Anleitung abarbeiten.

Die andere Schwierigkeit war die Sitzhöhe zu messen. Zum einen habe ich schlicht und ergreifend keinen Stuhl mit einer geraden festen Sitzfläche, zum anderen ist das Messlineal letztlich so weit vom Körper weg, daß man eigentlich nur peilen kann.

The instructions how to take the measures are detailled and it was easy to follow them. The way to determine the crotch length was very interesting.

We had only two points that were somehow difficult. One were the hips. The pics show, that she has not very pronounced hips, so I had to guess. But the distance between waist and hips was inside the parameters of the table, so I probably guessed right.

Apart from that nothing was really according to the table of measurements, but that was not a big surprise. The fitting shell is size 18 and the body measurements were either bigger or smaller than the standard measurements. What came out a little surprise was that we had to lengthen the pants. Frau mhs is normally petite so that was very unusual. But we decided not to think, just to follow the instructions.

The other measurement that was difficult to take was the crotch heigth. First I just have no flat and hard surface to sit on and secondly the ruler to measure with is quite far away from the body so I had to fix it from a distance.

Danach haben wir dann genauso stur den Schnitt verändert.

An einigen Stellen mußte noch etwas Folie untergelegt werden, an anderen reichte die ausführliche Nahtzugabe von 2,5 cm.

Da Frau mhs ein Kurvenlineal und einen Schneiderwinkel hat, haben wir an einigen Stellen nur die Punkte markiert und sie wird sie Zuhause zu Linien verbinden.

Die neuen Schnitteile sehen definitiv... interessant aus. Aber es sind einige Veränderungen dabei, die wir bei unseren bisherigen Versuchen so noch nicht probiert haben.

Also sind wir mal hoffnungsvoll. Je nach dem, wie weit Frau mhs kommt, geht es beim nächsten Mal vielleicht sogar mit einer zugeschnittenen Hose weiter. Mal sehen...

Then we used the measurements to alter the pattern.

On some places we even had to use more plastic sheet to make the pattern big enough. We mostly only marked the new points and did not trace the sewing line. Frau mhs has a tailors curve at home so she'll do it with that.

The altered pattern pieces look quite different from any pants pattern we had ever seen. And there were alteration that we never have tried before. So this inspires hope...

So if everything turns out well, we might already have a cut fabric the next time...

Diesmal mit System! (Hosenanpassung Teil 1)

This time we'll do it systematically! (Pants that fit, part 1)

Gelegentlich mag es in einem Nebensatz schon angeklungen sein... Frau mhs (aka ma-san) kämpft seit zwei (oder sind es schon drei?) Jahren um einen wirklich passenden Hosenschnitt. Und ich känpfe mit.

Wir haben ungefähr alles versucht, die Palmer-Pletsch Methode, eine Anleitung aus Threads, The Perfect Fit, ein Hosenmaßschnitt von Burda,... nichts gelang wirklich. Wenn wir an einer Stelle die Falten weg hatten, dann kamen an anderer Stelle neue. Der eine oder andere Schnitt ließ sich so anpassen, daß er halbwegs ging, aber wirklich gut ist anders.

My sewing-friend Frau mhs (aka ma-san) is fighting for a really fitting pattern for pants for two... or is it already three years? And I joined her in the fight.

We tried about any method. Palmer-Pletsch, a Threads article, The Perfect Fit, a made to measure pattern from Burda,... whatever we did... fitting one edge created wrinkles, creases or whatever at another place. We were able to fit one or the other pattern in a way that made a wearable trouser, but nothing of it was really good.

Allerdings waren wir bisher noch nie streng systematisch vorgegangen. Mal haben wir an einem Schnitt gebastelt, dann wieder an einem anderen,...

Also haben wir uns zu einem ultimativen letzten Versuch entschlossen. Frau mhs hat in die "Fitting Shell" von Vogue investiert. Einen karierten Webstoff hat sie auch schon gekauft und wir haben am Donnerstag gemeinsam die zehn (!) seitige Anleitung genau durchgelesen.

Only we never worked really systematically. We tried to fit one pattern, then altered a bit on another,...

So we decided an ultimate last try. Frau mhs investet in the Vogue Fitting Shell. She already purchased a cheap fabric with a woven check and on Thursday we read all ten (!) pages of the instructions very carefully.

Schon das Lesen brachte einige interessante Erkenntnisse. Zum Beispiel, daß Vogue Hosenschnitte an der Taille 3,8 cm und an der Hüfte von 9cm Bewegungszugabe ausgehen. Das ist, mit Verlaub, relativ üppig und erklärt, warum viele Leute berichten, daß sie die Schnitte eine oder zwei Größen kleiner verwenden. (Und auch ich bei Hosen leicht eine Größe kleiner nehmen kann, als die Tabelle vorsieht.)

Bis nächste Woche will sie den Papierschnitt bügeln und kopieren. Da wir vermutlich ziemlich viel ändern müssen, möchten wir das originale Papier nicht zerschneiden, damit wir wieder von vorne anfangen können, wenn wir irgendwo einen Fehler machen.

Nächste Woche wollen wir dann Karneval ignorieren und sie genau nach der Anleitung des Schnittes vermessen. Außerdem wollen wir den Prozess hier im Blog dokumentieren. Also mal sehen, ob dieser Schnitt das Versprechen einer perfekten Hose einlösen kann.

Reading already gave some interesting results. For example that Vogue works with a wearing ease of 3.8 cm on the waist and 9 cm on the hips for pants. That is quite a lot and explains, why often people describe, that they need one or two sizes less than the table of measurement indicates. (And even I can use one size smaller if I want fitted pants.)

Over this week Frau mhs intends to iron the pattern paper and trace a copy. We'll have to do a lot of alterations and adjustments and in case we mess it up we prefer to have the original pattern for a fresh start.

Next week is carneval (very big and important day here!), but we intend to ignore that and instead taking her measurements according to the instructions. We also plan to blog about the whole fitting process and we'll see whether this will result in the perfect pants the pattern promises.

Da ich mich immer noch für keinen Schnitt entschieden habe, greife ich mein Thema vom vorletzten Post noch mal auf...

As I haven't decided yet for a pattern to sew I continue writing about ease...

Mit der Bewegungszugabe ist es aber noch nicht getan. Denn die vom Designer gewünschte und geplante Silhouette ist ja nicht immer körpernah, sondern kann auch mehr oder weniger weit sein. Dafür kommt also noch mal was drauf...

Wearing ease alone isn't the end. Not all clothes are planned to by slim fitting. So there is more to add...

Wenn ich den Schnitt selber entwerfe, kann ich natürlich selber entscheiden, wie weit oder eng es werden soll. Aber wenn ich mit einem Fertigschnitt arbeite wäre es manchmal schön zu wissen, wie weit das Kleidungsstück am Ende eigentlich werden wird.

Sind Photos dabei, sollte man diesen entnehmen können, ob ein Kleidungsstück eng oder weit am Körper fällt. Zumindest wenn man genau hinsieht. Aber wir wissen alle, daß aussagekräftige Photos nicht immer mitgeliefert werden. Und ist ein Modell nur gezeichnet oder habe ich nur die Schemazeichnung vorlieren, dann ist leider raten angesagt.

Bei den großen amerikanischen Firmen steht dabei, wie es gemeint ist, von "close fitting" über "fitted", "semi-fitted", "loose fitting" bis "very loose fitting" verrät die Schnittmustertüte, was mich erwartet. (Oder erwarten sollte... )

Und die jeweiligen Designzugaben sind sogar auf der Webseite veröffentlicht:

Bei Burda und den meisten Zeitschriften hilft dann nur noch raten...

If I'm making my own patterns it's me who decides how much design ease I want. But working with purchased patterns it sometimes is not clear at all what we have to expect.

If there are photos they can help to guess how the garment hangs on the body. But the pics are not always helpfull. And some patterns only show paintings or technical drawings. Then guessing becomes hazardous...

The big american pattern companies luckily tell you from "close fitting" to "fitted", "semi-fitted", "loose fitting" to "very loose fitting" what you can expect. (Or what you are supposed to expect...)

Bei einem Mantel mißt man laut Tabelle die weiteste Stelle (ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, ob das für den Saum eines Mantels in A-Linie auch gilt...)

Das Hüftmaß des Schnittes ist bei Rock oder Hose relevant:

For skirt or slacks you take the measurements on the hip of the pattern:

Close Fitting (sehr körpernah): 0 cm - 5,1 cm

Fitted: 5,1 cm - 7,6 cm

Semi-Fitted: 7,6 cm - 10,2 cm

Loose Fitting: 10,2 cm - 15,2 cm

Very Loose Fitting (sehr weit): > 15,2 cm

Interessant ist dieses Wissen auch, wenn es um Schnittveränderungen geht. Denn bei wem stimmen die Körpermaße schon exakt mit den Maßen aus der Tabelle der Schnitthersteller überein? Bei mir nicht.

Wenn man also z.B. 5 cm mehr Hüftweite hat, als in der Maßtabelle vorgesehen, der Schnitt (zur Bewegungszugabe, nicht vergessen, die Designzugabe kommt dazu) aber ohnehin 10cm Mehrweite vorsieht, dann kann man durchaus ohne Schnittänderung davon kommen.

That knowledge is also very interesting when you fit your pattern. Do your body measurements meet exactly the measurement charts of the pattern companies? Mine do not...

So if, for example, your hips are 5 cm larger than the pattern chart has planned for, but the design ease is 10 cm you have a chance to get away without pattern alteration. (Don't forget, the design ease is on top of the wearing ease. The wearing ease you will need.)

Zum Schluß noch ein paar Worte zu keiner Bewegungszugabe bzw. negativer Zugabe: Außer bei elastischen Stoffen braucht man die auch bei allem, was wirklich eng sitzen muß oder soll. Die wichtigsten Beispiele sind enge Jeanshosen und Corsagen oder ähnliche enge Oberteile, die alleine am Körper halten sollen. Dabei nicht vergessen: Fett und Muskeln kann man noch ein bißchen zusammendrücken, Knochen nicht... ;)

To finish this topic some words about no ease and negative ease: You can do this on very elastic fabrics like swimwear, but there are some other exceptions that require a snug fit: tight blue jeans are one case, the other one are tight bodices (on a gown, for example) that have to stay on. But don't forget: You can compress fat and muscles, but not your bones... ;)

Also kommen hier erst einmal die Schnitteile der Jacke.

Unten auf dem Bild sind die beiden Rückenteile, darüber der Sattel. Oben liegen die beiden Vorderteile. Und rechts der Ärmel.

Auf dem Bild fehlt noch der Kragen und die Schulterklappen. (Von letzteren habe ich leider kein Bild gemacht. Für die Knopfblende und den Bund gibt es kein Schnitteil, die sind rechteckig und ich habe sie einfach vermaßt und direkt auf den Stoff gezeichnet.

I've never shown the "big whole"... from may. neither the whole outfit nor the pattern of the jacket.

So here are the finished pattern pieces of the jacket: on the bottom of the pic the side and middle back pattern, above them the yoke and an top the side and middle front pattern. On the right side the sleeve.

Not on the picture ist the collar and also the epualets. (I forgot to take pictures of the latter one.) For the buttonstand and the "waist"band (which is not on waiste level) I made no patterns. They are rectangular and I marked them directely on the fabric.

Und hier endlich.... ein Bild vom Gesamtoutfit.

Ich war mir relativ unsicher, ob die Proportionen mit dem kurzen Jäckchen bei meiner Figur eine gute Idee ist.

Aber ich muß sagen, zu meiner eigenen Überraschung gefällt es mir tatsächlich. Und wenn ich genau hinsehe... Ich glaube mein Indienurlaub hat Spuren hinterlassen. Ein Kameez wäre länger, aber mit Churridar und einer Jacke (die auch länger wäre) würde es ähnlich aussehen.

Statt schwarzer Schuhe habe ich auch türkise und seit dem Schlußverkauf in Paris sogar weiße. (Na gut, off white...)

Eine Frage bleibt allerdings: Was für eine Handtasche paßt dazu? Ich könnte mir ja so ein oversized Riesenteil vorstellen (ein Vorteil wenn man dick ist, man kann beliebig große Handtaschen verwenden ohne auszusehen wie der sprichwörtliche Schwanz, der mit dem Hund wedelt...), aber wie genau sollte sie aussehen? Und welche Farbe?

Vorschläge? Ich bin offen für alles...

And here is finally the picture of the complete May outfit. I was not sure at all whether the cropped jacket was a good idea for my figure.

But to my own surprise... I like it! And if I give it a closer look... I think the holiday in India still shows. Sure, a kameeze would be longer, but with churridar and a typical jacket (which would be longer also)... it's not so far of. I think.

Instead of black shoes I also could wear turquoise ones and since the summer sale in Paris I also own white (okay, off-white) ballerinas.

Remains one question: What kind of a bag/tote/purse/... do I wear with that? I could imagine one of those huge oversized ones (an advantage when you are oversized you can wear big bags without looking like the tail that wags the dog....), but what exactely should it look like? And what colour would be good?

Any ideas? I'd appreciate to hear of them...

Zu guter letzt auch noch ein Bild von der Rückansicht der Jacke.

Aufgenommen NACH einem Tag tragen und einem Abend herumsitzen, deswegen ist sie so zerknittert und die Rückenfalte ist aufgedehnt.

Aber ich denke die Details wie die Rückenfalte und der Sattel sind wenigstens gut erkennbar.

And finally I managed to take a picture of the back of the jacket.

It was taken after a day of wearing the jacket and a long evening sitting around, so it is wrinkled and the box pleat on the center back is opened up.

But I think you can at least see the details like the pleat and the yoke.

So, dann ist hiermit der Montivationsmonat Mai auch abgeschlossen... Ist ja erst Juli... (und zu kalt um das Outfit anzuziehen.... :-/ )

So finally the May sew along is done. It's only July now... (and to cold to wear that outfit...:-/ )

Zwar ist schon Juli, aber vom Mai ist noch was nachzutragen. Und zwar fehlt meinem Kurzjäckchen ja noch der Stehkragen. Und auch der ist ganz einfach zu basteln.

It's already July, but there is still something missing from May. My short jacket also has a collar, a simple stand-up collar. And for those who have never done one I'll explain how to make it.

Zuerst einmal brauche ich die Linie an der der Halsausschnitt entlangläuft. Bei meinem Originalschnitt war der Ausschnitt etwas tiefer gesetzt, daher muß ich am Schnitt den Halsausschnitt verkleinern. In meinem Fall konnte ich eine bereits nach dem Schnitt genähte Jacke anziehen und eine Nähfreundin hat den Abstand Stoffkante zu meiner natürlichen Halslinien gemessen. (Man kann eine Kette um den Hals legen oder eine etwas scherere Kordel um die Linie zu finden.) Danach habe ich hinten 4cm zugegeben, vorne und an den Seiten etwas weniger. Bevor ich den Kragen konstruierte habe, habe ich die bis dahin fast fertige Kurzjacke (mit den Ärmeln, denn die können den Verlauf noch etwas verändern!) angezogen und danach den Ausschnitt hinten wieder etwas vergrößert. (Dran denken, daß Nahtzugabe dran ist!)

Ein Stehkragen verläuft eher nah am Hals aber im Detail ist das natürlich wieder persönliche Geschmackssache. Deswegen anprobieren und gucken.

First I had to determine the neckline. My original pattern had a lowered neckline so I had to add to the pattern, getting the jacket going up to my neck. In this case, as I already had a finished jacket after the same pattern I just put the jacket on and had a sewing friend measuring the distance between jacket neckline and my natural neckline. (You can wear a short collier or just use a not to lightweight cord around your neck to see where the neckline is.) After that I added 4cm to the pattern neckline in the back middle and a little less on front and shoulder line. Before finally constructing the collar I put on my now sewn white jacket (sleeves set in because that can change the neckline of a garment) and decided to lower the neckline again by 1cm in the back middle, tapering zu the shoulder line. (When putting your garment on do not forget that the fabric has seam allowances!)

A stand-up collar normaly runs quite close to the neck, but how close is matter of personal taste. So try and check is best.

Danach markiere ich die Kragenansatzlinie an meiner Jacke und messe deren Länge mit einem senkrecht gestellten Maßband. (Zur Markierung nähe ich einfach eine Naht in 1,5cm Abstand von der Kante, auf der Naht nähe ich später den Kragen an, man sieht sie also nicht mehr. Man kann aber auch Kreide oder die eigene Lieblikngsmarkiermethode benutzen.)

Next step is to determine the length of the collar. For that I'm marking my seamline und measure the length of it with a flexible ruler or a tape measure. (To mark the line I'm just sewing 1,5cm from the cut edge with my sewing machine, later I'll sew the coller exactly to that line of stitches so it won't be visible. But you can also use chalk or whatever method you prefere.)

Die gemessene Kragenlänge teile ich durch zwei und schneide dann aus einen Blatt Papier ein Rechteck 1/2 Kragenlänge x gewünschte Kragenbreite. Ich habe mich für 4cm entschieden, was auch die breite der vorderen Belege an der Knopfleiste ist. Das sieht im Gesamteindruck harmonisch aus.

Die vordere Rundung zeichne ich erst auf und schneide sie dann so wie sie mir gefällt.

Als nächstes messe ich meinen Halsumfang und zwar vier cm über der Kragenansatznaht. Mein Stehkragen soll relativ eng anliegen, überlappt aber nicht. Daher benutze ich dieses Maß für die obere Kante meines Kragens.

Ich schneide etwa alle 2cm an der einen Kante meines Papiers ein und zwar fast durch, aber nicht ganz, so daß das Papier an der anderen Längskante gerade noch zusammenhängt. Und jetzt überlappe ich an der oberen Kante das Papier, bis ich die gewünschte Länge (bzw. "Kürze") erreicht habe. Ich überlappe immer nur einen halben Zentimeter (es wird also bei jedem Einschnitt einen Zentimeter schmaler) bis ich meine gewünschte Halsweite erreicht habe. Dadurch legt sich der Kragen automatisch schon fast in eine schöne Rundung.

Then I'm cutting a paper rectangle, length is half the measured length of the seamline, height is how I wand my collar to be. I choose 4cm because that is also the width of my buttonstand so the overall impresson of the garment will be calm and balanced. (Also my neck is long enough to look good with that collar width.)

The curved front of collar I'm just drawing free and cut it when I like the result. If not I just try again on another piece of paper.

Next step is to determine the length of the upper edge of the collar. Measuring again, this time my neck 4cm (=collarheigth) above the line where collar and jacket will meet. I wanted the collar quite close to my neck and it doesn't overlap at the front, so I just took that measure directly without adding ease.

To make my piece of paper a collar pattern I'm cutting every 2cm, from one long side to the other,but not completely through but I'm leaving hinges on the lower part of my paper (collar). The rest is just overlapping, not more than 0.5cm per cut (This means every cut-operlap section reduces the collerwidth on the upper end by 1cm.) until the desired width is reached. Overlapping only small amounts per cut forms a nice curve automatically, you don't need a curved ruler or anything like that.

Der Rest ist quasi Formsache... die rohe Kragenform wird noch mal auf ein frisches Blatt Papier gelegt, eine Nahtzugabe angezeichnet, der Stoffbruch in der hinteren Mitte markiert und der Kragen beschriftet.

Schon fertig.

Den Eintrag darüber zu schreiben dauerte länger als den Kragen zu konstruieren... :o)

The rest is just finishing touches.... I position the "raw" collar pattern on a fresh sheet of paper, I add seam allowances, mark the fold on the middle back and lable my new collar pattern.

Done.

Writing this entry took much more time then constructing the collar... :o)
