Socks with hooks

Nachdem Bärbel mir ja schon die ganze Zeit was vorgehäkelt hat mußte ich es einfach mal probieren... Nur um zu sehen, ob es geht...

Socken häkeln. Und tatsächlich, es funktioniert und man kann sie sogar anziehen.

Since Bärbel did it all the time I finally couldn't resist and had to try it myself. Just to find out whether it works.

Crocheted sock. And indeed, it works and I can even wear them.

Natürlich habe ich mir auch Bärbels Buch Gehäkelte Trend-Socken vorgenommen. Nicht nur verschiedene Sockenmodelle sind drin, sondern auch schlichte Grundanleitungen. Ich habe die Grundanleitung für die "rundgehäkelte Socke" genommen.

Of course I used Bärbels Book Gehäkelte Trend-Socken. there are not only different fancy socks but also basic instructions you can use in any size. I used the instructions for "rundgehäkelte Socke". (Bärbel has it on ravelry as "Basic Socks".)

Und habe einfach der Anleitung gemäß gearbeitet. Hinten im Buch ist nämlich eine Lasche mit übersichtlichen Maschen- und Zentimeterangaben für verschiedene Größen. (Und ein aufgedrucktes Zentimetermaß ist ebenfalls nützlich, so mußte ich mein Bandmaß nicht auspacken.)

I had never crocheted socks before so I just made my way through the instructions. That worked well, there were only two things that irritated me a bit on my way. One was forming the heel, I had the knitted heel in mind so I ignored the instructions about distributing the added stitches. That looks a bit funny now, but when I'm wearing it it works well anyhow.

Die Anleitung funktionierte sehr gut, ich konnte mich einfach "entlanghäkeln". Irritiert war ich nur zwei Mal, einmal bei der Ferse, so ich die Zunahmen erst mal ungeschickt verteilt habe. Ich hatte die Strickferse im Kopf und verstand daher nicht, warum ich die Zunahmen verteilen soll. Und habe es daher auch nicht wirklich gemacht. Naja, man häkelt erst mal einen relativ flachen Teller, also muß man die Zunahmen verteilen. Tut man es nicht, sieht die Socke zwar etwas seltsam aus, beim Tragen ist es dann aber egal.

Der zweite Punkt war der Übergang zum Schaft, da heißt es nämlich, man soll die Abnahme wie bei der Nahtsocke machen. Dann mußte ich mir das erst mal durchlesen (hatte ich nicht vor gehabt) und es brauchte etwas Vorstellungsvermügen, wie das bei der Rundsocke geht. Aber ich habe es rausgefunden. :)

The second point were the decreases at the shaft. Here the instructions tell you to check at the sewn sock pattern. So I had to read that and figure out, because the other pattern is not in the round, so I needed some imagination. But I managed. :)

Die Socken sind elastischer als ich erwartet hatte und tragen sich gut. Etwas rauher finde ich, als gestrickte. Und jetzt sind sie in der Wäsche...

Excessive Swatching

Daß ich mit meiner Challengetasche so spät angefangen habe hatte natürlich Gründe. Da ich mit dem Männerpulli ja zumindest so weit fertig war, daß die Ausarbeitung Zuhause weiter erfolgen muß brauchte ich dringend wieder ein Strickprojekt für unterwegs. Ich wollte mein nächstes Laceprojekt aus "Victorian Lace Today" angehen, nämlich "Miss Lambert's Shetland Pattern for a Shawl",eigentlich ein recht unkompliziertes Muster.

Leider gefiel mir nicht nur das Muster, sondern auch die Farbe und die Gesamtanmutung der Stola, so daß ich gerne das Originalgarn genommen hätte. Nur leider war das ein handgesponnenes und sehr feines Wollgarn und damit begannen die Probleme...

There is a reason why I started so late with my Challenge bag. Since I had finished the men's sweater to an extend where the rest of the work like blocking and sewing would have to be done at home I was in urgent need for a new knitting project on the go. I had already choosen another easy lace project from "Victorian Lace Today", "Miss Lambert's Shetland Pattern for a Shawl". Didn't look complicated.

In this case I did not only like the pattern but also the colour and the over all impression of the shawl so I'd prefered to get the original yarn. Only this is some extra fine handspun woolen yarn which is not sold anywhere. And that's where the problems started.

Die Anleitung möchte extra dünnes Garn, feiner als Kid Silk Haze, da wird das Angebot dann schon recht klein. Jetzt wollte ich außerdem das leicht fusselige des Originals, kein fest gedrehtes Garn. Da wurde es dann auch in der Maschenkunst schwierig. Nur Alpaca 1 von Isager gefiel mir. Nur ist die halt aus Alpaca... aber ich nahm sie trotzdem.

Da ich lockerer stricke als die meisten Anleitungen vorsehen, aber dennoch ungefähr die gleiche Größe für den Schal haben wollte wie vorgesehen, machte ich also brav meine Maschenprobe in glatt rechts. Statt der angegebenen 3,5 nahm ich auch gleich 3,25er Nadeln und meine Maschenprobe (rechts im Bild) hatte die passende Breite. Höhe fehlte wie immer einige Reihen. Nähere Inspektion zeigte, daß meine Rückreihen immer deutlich kleinere Maschen hatten als meine Hinreihen. Also mein Knit Pro System einfach mit 3,25 Nadel für die rechten und einer 3,5 Nadel für die linken Maschen (also Rückreihen) bestückt und schon wurde das Gestrick gleichmäßiger und gewann auch an Höhe. (Wenngleich immer noch einige Reihen zur angegebenen Maschenprobe fehlten.)

The pattern needs very thin lace yarn, finer than Kid Silk Haze and there are not too many yarns available in that class. (Even at Maschenkunst) Also I wanted the slight fuzziness of the shawl in the book and the extra fine lace yarns in wool were all firmly plied. Only Alpaca 1 from Isager had basically the look I wanted, only it's alpaca, not wool... but I bought two balls and went away.

Since I know that I usually need smaller needles to get the gauge I started swatching with 3.25 needles instead of 3.5. I know that a shawl can have any dimensions, but if you want about the same dimensions as the pattern tells you, you better swatch. In stockinette for this pattern. The number of stitches was fine that way, only I needed (as always) way more rows. Then I detected that systematically the stitches I had purled were smaller, shorter. So I loaded my Knit Pro system with one 3.25 and one 3.5 needle and made another swatch. Which was way more regular. Also a bit higher (still some rows short of the gauge).

Munter strickte ich los um nach einigen Reihen festzustellen, daß ich zum einen ständig Fehler machte und noch schlimmer das Muster nicht so recht wie in der Vorlage aussah. Irgendwie hatte ich nur Löcher, aber nix dazwischen, auf dem Bild sah das anders aus... :/

Also die ersten Reihen wieder aufgezogen (macht bei Alpaka auch sehr viel Spaß) und eine Maschenprobe gestartet. (Links im Bild.)

Ne, das ist kein Muster, das ist nur murks.

Alpaka verhält sich deutlich anders als Wolle. Das wußte ich schon mal, aber ich hatte es vergessen.

Confidently I cast on and started knitting the shawl. Some rows later I had to admit that I was not only making constantly mistakes and had to backstitch a lot, but also the pattern did not look like on the pic. Somehow I had only holes but nothing that makes the holes a pattern... :/

So I frogged the first rows (which was not too funny with alpaca) and made a new swatch. In pattern this time. (left one in the pic).

No, that is not a pattern. Alpaca behaves quite differently than wool. I knew that once but evidently forgot.

Um zu sehen, ob das Garn vielleicht einfach zu dünn oder die Nadeln für meine Strickweise einfach zu dick sind habe ich die Brutalmaschenprobe gemacht (rechts im obigen Bild): doppelter Faden und Nadelstärke 3. Auch das ging nicht in die richtige Richtung.

Also wieder in die Maschenkunst und schweren Herzens mit zwei Knäuel "Silvia" wieder rausgekommen. Ein schön fest gedrehtes Lacegarn aus Wolle, das für ein prägnantes Muster sorgen sollte.

To find out quickly whether the yarn was to thin for my knitting or the needles still to thick I made another swatch with two strands of yarn and a 3.0 needle. (right swatch on the pic above) It was different, but not better. Not even the right direction.

So back to Maschenkunst. I left with two balls of "Silvia", a firmly plied fine lace yarn that should produce a well defined pattern.

Ja, das wurde schon besser. Aber so ganz glücklich war ich nicht, weil ich ja eigentlich einen etwas fusseligeren Eindruck haben wollte.

Während ich so vor mich hin maschenprobte fiel mir plötzlich ein Tip ein, den ich von Liane mal in einem anderen Zusammenhang bekommen hatte. Und probierte das mal auf Löcher bezogen aus...

That was better. Still I wasn't completely happy since I still longed for a more fuzzy feeling of the shawl.

While I was swatching I suddenly remembered something Liane had once told me in other circumstances. And I tried that trick on holes...

Und voilà! Nicht perfekt, aber ein Muster.

Und ein Kompromiss mit dem ich werde leben können.

Allerdings brauche ich jetzt ein weiteres Knäuel von der Isager Wolle. Zwei Knäuel hätten ziemlich genau gereicht, aber mit den ganzen Maschenproben habe ich diesmal schon viel verbraucht. :o

And voilà! Not perfect, but a pattern.

And a compromise I'll be able to live with.

Only I used so much yarn for swatching that I'll need another ball of yarn. :o

... zumindest für den Herrenpulli den ich ja schon im Frühjahr angefangen habe.

End of summerbreak, at least for the men's sweater I've started in spring.

Nachdem ich einige Monate nur gehäkelt hatte fühlten sich die Stricknadeln übrigens irgendwie... "falsch" an und es dauerte, bis meine Hände sich wieder daran gewöhnten. Aber dann flutschte es wieder recht zügig. In den Wochen vor dem Urlaub hatte ich noch einige Sitzungen und Seminare, der Urlaub selber hatte Wartezeiten auf Flughäfen, Flüge und zwei längere Bahnfahrten und letztes Wochenende hatte ich noch eine Fortbildung, die nur meinen Kopf, noch aber meine Hände beanspruchte. :)

Und das heißt, ich bin tatsächlich fertig mit Stricken!

Rückenteil und Vorderteil sind auch schon gewaschen und gespannt, der zweite Ärmel ist mir gerade erst von der Nadel gerutscht und wie man sieht muß hier noch vernäht und gespannt werden.

After some month of crocheting knitting felt somewhat "wrong" and it took me some days to make my hands feel comfortable again with the needles, but then I went on quite fast again. The weeks before my holiday I had to attend some meetings and workshops, the holiday itself brought valuable knitting time while waiting on airports and on trains. And last weekend I took part in another seminar which only required my brain, not so much my hands.

So I'm finished with the knitting part.

Back and front have already been washed and blocked, the sleeves are knit but need weaving the threads and blocking.

Ein bißchen ist aber noch zu stricken, denn der Kragen ist recht hoch und der Reißverschluss bekommt innen eine Blende.

Der Plan ist, die Schulternähte zu schließen, den Kragen anzustricken und die Ärmel (nach dem spannen, versteht sich) anzunähen und den Pulli dann im November vor der endgültigen Fertigstellung dem künftigen Besitzer einmal anzuprobieren. Zwischenanproben waren ja nicht möglich und falls doch noch was neu gemacht werden muß, muß ich wenigstens nicht alles trennen....

There is still a bit of knitting left, because the collar is quite high and the zip gets a facing.

What I plan to do is closing the shoulder seams, knitting the collar and sew the sleeves (after blocking them, of course) and then try it on in november when I hope to meet the future owner of the sweater the next time. There was no possibility to try it on so far and if alterations are necessary I do not have to reopen all of the seams....

Crochet finished

So, das Werk ist vollbracht, nach vielen Knäueln ist die Tasche fertig. Zumindest fertig gehäkelt, denn damit aus diesem unförmigen Etwas eine Tasche wird, ist noch einige Arbeit nötig.

Erst mal waschen, dann ein Futter nähen, diverse sonstige Stütznähte, endlich mal genau überlegen, wie das mit den Henkeln sein soll...

Mal sehen, wie lange das noch dauert. Bei den aktuellen Wetter bekomme ich eher wieder Lust, meinen Manter fertig zu nähen...

It's done, after a lot of balls of wool the bag is finished. At least the crocheting part. There is some more work to do before this thing can be considered a bag.

Washing will be first, then making a lining, some seams to stabilize it, deciding about handles...

Let's see how long that will take. With the weather we have now I feel more like finishing my coat...

The Rack for Holes

Es ist vollbracht, mein erster Lace Schal ist fertig. Fertig gestrickt ist er schon seit einer guten Weile, aber jetzt habe ich ihn endlich auch mal nass gemacht und gespannt.

Was nicht so einfach war.

Das Muster ist "Large Rectangle with center diamond pattern" aus Victorian Lace Today. Gestrickt habe ich mit dem angegebenen Garn, Rowan Kidsilk Haze (aus der Maschenkunst).

Mit der Größe habe ich defintiv ein Problem. Die angegebene Maschenprobe im Buch wird glatt rechts gestrickt. Nach der dritten Maschenprobe hatte ich eine Nadelstärke gefunden, bei der ich auf die passende Breite komme, aber die Höhe stimmte nicht. Also habe ich das entsprechend der Maschenprobe umgerechnet und habe etliche Rapporte in der Höhe mehr gestrickt.

Mit dem Ergebnis, daß mein Schal (der ja auch noch den angestrickten Rand bekam) ein Stück länger wurde als laut Anleitung. Es hätten knapp 2m werden sollen, meiner ist deutlich länger. Da aber meine "Spannmatratze" nur 2m lang ist, habe ich dann etwas mehr in die Breite gezogen und vor allem in der zweiten Hälfte etwas weniger stark gespannt.

Also das mit dem Spannen muß ich wohl noch üben, vor allem worauf soll man denn so was langes spannen? Teppich habe ich keinen...

Als Verbrauch waren 4 Knäuel angegeben, das vierte habe ich aber nur angefangen, bei normaler Länge wären es wohl nur drei gewesen. (Nicht zu vergessen die vielen Maschenproben...) Aber der Schal ist sehr schön geworden, fühlt sich wirklich wie ein Nichts auf der Haut an und wärmt schön.

Jetzt muß ich nur noch meine Tasche fertig häkeln, den Herrenpulli stricken und dann kann ich mich ans nächste Lace Projekt machen... :)

My first lace scarf is finished. I finished knitting quite a while ago, but now I finally managed to block it also.

Which was not so easy..

The pattern is "Large Rectangle with center diamond pattern" from Victorian Lace Today. I used the yarn from the book, Rowan Kidsilk Haze (purchased from Maschenkunst).

The size is defintely a problem. The gauge is in stockinette stitch. After the third test square I had found a needle size that would give me the right number of stitches, but not the rows. So I recalculated the pattern length according to my stockinette gauge and knitted some chart lengthes more.

This resulted in my shawl beeing a good deal longer than the pattern said. It is supposed to be a little less than 2 m, mine is longer (including the knit on border, that could not be measured before). How long I cannot say, because the mattress I use for blocking has only 2m length. So I pulled it a bit larger and especially in the second half a little less in length.

I think blocking is something I'll have to practise... But how you do that when your longest mattress is 2 m long? (And I have no carpet in my house...)

According to the instructions the shawl lakes 4 balls, I needed only a bit more then three, even though my shawl is longer and I needed 3 samples to determine the gauge. So if you are short on money just reduce the length a bit and you should be able to get away with three. The yarn is worth the money, because the shawl is super lightweight, feels like a nothing on the skin but still quite warming.

Now I only have to finish my crocheted bag, then the men's sweater for my friend and then I can start my next lace project...

Summerstitches

Manche Dinge sind offensichtlich ansteckend. Und so kann man offensichtlich nicht mit Bärbel zusammensein, ohne daß einem dann "Häkeln" als Technik einfällt. Aber vielleicht von vorne...

Letztes Jahr im Mai hatte ich mir ja dieses Outfit genäht, nur fehlte mir die Handtasche. Zum einen wußte ich nicht recht, was ich überhaupt wollte und als sich langsam ein Bild ergab, nämlich weiß und sehr groß, gab es natürlich nichts passendes zu kaufen.

Und da meine Projekte ja oft aus dem entstehen, was mich umgibt... lag der Entschluß zumindest nicht fern, eine Tasche zu häkeln.

Last year in may I made this outfit for the "Motivationsmonat" sew along. the problem that remained over the winter was the handbag question. It took me months to find out what I wanted and in the end I couldn't find anything I liked. But at least I had decided I wanted it white and large.

And evidently it is not possible to hang around with Bärbel without ending with an idea for a bag in crochet...

Und so bin ich vor gut zwei Wochen in die Maschenkunst getrabt und habe mich mit 500g Garn eingedeckt.

Ich habe mir für "linen" von "katja" entschieden, denn es sollte nicht zu dick sein und reine Baumwolle ist schwerer als dieses Mischgarn. Außerdem nutzte ich die Gelegenheit, mal eine der ergonomischen Nadeln von Clover in 3,25 auszuprobieren.

Die Tasche sieht im Moment nicht sehr aufregend aus, aber da ich bislang fast nur feste Maschen gehäkelt habe, sind es eine ganze Menge Maschen. Aber ich habe endlich die geplante Breite erreicht, jetzt geht es nur noch für eine lange Zeit "Gradeaus" nach oben. Was schon klar ist, ist daß das Garn nicht reichen wird. Ich habe Daniela von der Maschenkunst zwar beschrieben, wie groß ich sie haben will und die festen Maschen fressen wirklich eine Menge garn, aber die Schätzung mit 500g lag weit daneben.

Das Garn häkelt sich gewöhnungsbedürftig, denn es ist nicht sehr fest gedreht. Und die Häkelnadel ist eine Krankheit. Für meine Häkeltechnik ist der breite und etwas eckige Griff absolut nicht geeignet. Ich muß die Nadel mit den Fingern drehen können und mit dem Griff geht das nicht. Aber da ich auch noch Garn brauche, sind bis dahin hoffentlich auch die KnitPro Häkelnadeln angekommen, die ich ohnehin lieber gehabt hätte...

So I went to Maschenkunst about two weeks ago and came back with 500g ot "linen" from "katia" and a Clover crochet hook. I wanted a not to thick yarn and the cotton linen blend has the advantage that it weigth a little less than pure cotton.

The bag so far does not look very thrilling, but as I'm using mostly single crochet there are already a lot of stitches done. I have reached the full width now and the next weeks will be simply crocheting straight on. What I can already say is that the yarn will not be enough. Daniela from Maschenkunst did a guess we both thought to be genereous, but I'll need more of it.

The yarn is not the best choice for crochet as it is not very firmly twisted, but I'm getting used to it. The crochet hook on the contrary... my technique needs a round handle because I'm turning the hook with my fingers. If people see me crochet they usually get a strange look, so evidently I'm doing it not the "right" way. Well, I'll have to get more yarn and I'll get another hook, I hope the ones from Knit Pro have arrived now...

Summerbreak!

Ja ne, nicht im Blog, keine Sorge. (Oder keine Chance, je nach Sichtweise... )

Aber ich hatte mir ja letzten Sommer dieses Outfit genäht, zu dem mir immer noch die Handtasche fehlt.

Nachdem ich mich endlich entschieden habe, daß ich wohl einfach eine weiße dazu will und natürlich keine gefunden habe, die mir gefällt, muß ich selber aktiv werden.

No, not for the blog, no worries (or no chance, depends on your view...)

Last summer I made myself this outfit, but the handbag question had remained open.

I finally made up my mind and decided I'm wanting a white one. So I started searching for one and couldn't find one I liked. So I'll have to make one myself.

Da ich die Tasche schon immer Sommer brauche, mein Freund seinen Pulli aber erst im Winter, geht der Pulli jetzt in die Sommerpause. Immerhin ist schon ein gutes Stück des Vorderteils geschafft.

Allerdings stricke ich die Tasche nicht, nein, sie wird... gehäkelt. Da sie groß werden soll und dicht gehäkelt... muß ich jetzt dringend mal loslegen.

As I'll be needing the bag already in summer and my friend will not wear his woolen sweater before next winter, the sweater gets a summerbreak now. With a good deal of the front done.

But I will not knit the bag, no, crochet is my technique of choice this time. It's supposed to be big and densely crocheted, so I should start very soon.

Irgendwie geht das sogar schneller als erwartet, das Rückenteil ist schon fertig. (Schon seit einiger Zeit, wie gesagt, im Moment stricke ich wohl schneller als ich blogge...)

Für lange und dünne Männer strickt es sich offensichtlich auch recht zügig.

Progress is quicker than expected, the back is already done. (For a while, actually. Seems I'm knitting quicker than blogging at the moment....)

Knitting for long but thin men seems to be a rather quick thing.

Und falls ihr euch wundert, warum es so häufig Bilder vom Fortschritt gibt: Der künftige Eigentümer des Pullis liest mit. Immerhin hat er die Wolle auch schon bezahlt. ;)

In case you wonder why I'm blogging the progress rather often: The future owner of the sweater is reading here. And he already payed for the yarn... ;)

Now I'll speed up

Ich habe ja versprochen, daß ich versuche, meine Strickfortschritte endlich zeitnah zu posten, deswegen gibt es jetzt schon wieder eine neues Bild.

Ab hier geht es nämlich schneller weiter: Ich habe die Abnahme für den Armausschnitt beendet, das sind schon 32 Maschen weniger, das merkt man in jeder Reihe.

Am Muster habe ich eine kleine Änderung vorgenommen: Ich lasse eine Rippe rechter Maschen am Armausschnitt entlang hochlaufen. Das gefällt mir besser. Keine große Sache, aber offensichtlich kann ich einfach keine Anleitung benutzen, ohne wenigstens ein bißchen was zu ändern. *g*

As I've promised to post my knitting progress more up to date, here is more knitting news.

From here my knitting will speed up, because I did the decreases for the armhole, that makes 32 stitches less, that is enough to feel the difference in every row.

Here I made a small alteration of the pattern: I decided to have a rib of two stitches going up next to the armholeshaping. Not a big deal, but evidently I can do no pattern without changing something... *g*

Another ball of wool

Da ich ja schon seit vor Ostern an dem Pulli stricke bin ich inzwischen natürlich ein Stück weiter. (Mit dem Posten von dem Pulli bin ich definitiv hinten dran, aber ich gebe mir Mühe, aufzuholen und künftig aktueller zu berichten.)

Das erste Knäuel gab ja nicht mehr so viel her. Nach den ganzen Maschenproben reichte es kaum über das Bündchen hinaus.

Mit dem zweiten kam ich dann doch schon weiter, wie man sieht. Nicht so gut gefiel mir allerdings der Knoten im zweiten Knäuel. Das ist jetzt nicht so ganz die Qualität, die ich schätze. Mal sehen, wie das weitergeht...

As I started this sweater before Easter there is of course some progress since then. (I'm a bit behind with my postings of my knitting, but I'm trying to catch up and being more up to date in the future.)

What was leftover from my first ball after the swatching didn't bring me far, just the cuff and two more rows. That was it then.

The second ball did bring me much further, as the picture shows. What I was less happy with is the fact, that the yarn was broken and the ends knotted together towards the end of the ball. That is actually not the quality of yarn I prefer. So I hope this will not happen on every second ball...

Außerdem habe ich mal eine neue Technik ausprobiert, das Garn des neuen Knäuels anzuknüpfen.

Bisher habe ich immer einfach aufgehört, ein neues Knäuel angefangen und dann eben die Enden vernäht. Bei Socken habe ich auch schon mal einfach Ende vom einen und Anfang vom nächsten Knäuel miteinder verdrillt und dann über einige Maschen beide Fäden zusammengestrickt. Für einen Pulli will mir das jedoch nicht gefallen, ein bißchen sieht man es doch.

Ich habe aber auch Anleitungen gesehen (ich kann mir dummerweise nie merken, wo ich was gefunden habe, deswegen kann ich auch nie nachgucken, wie es genau ging), bei denen der Faden geteilt wird, dann die Hälfte vom alten mit der Hälfte vom neuen Garn zusammengedreht wird und dann einige Maschen mit diesem "halb-halb" Garn gestrickt werden, bevor man ganz auf das neue Knäuel wechselt.

Gut, das funktioniert... aber wo der Vorteil ist, erschließt sich mir nicht ganz. Jetzt habe ich auf der Rückseite halt zwei Mal zwei halbe Faden, statt zwei Mal einen ganzen Faden zum Vernähen. Da fehlt mir wohl noch der entscheidende Punkt?

Also I decided to try a new technique for joining the new ball.

So far I had just stopped at the end of one ball when the yarn got to short and knitted the next stitch with the new ball. And at the end I had to weave in the ends, of course. On socks often I just twisted both ends over some centimeters and knit some stitches with that "double yarn". For socks okay, but not for a sweater, because it remains a bit visible.

Sometime ago I've seen somewhere (I never remember where I've found something, I just remember the facts, so I can not look again, what it was exactely) another techniques: You untwist the end of both balls and separate them into two strands each. the you twist together one half of the old ball and the other half of the new ball and knit some stitches with that newly twisted yarn before you go on with the new ball alltogether. Well, that works nicely, but I must have missed the point somewhere. Instead of two dangling strands of yarn I have four half strands of yarn dangling. (And to weave in at the end.) So, what's the point?

A train journey...

.. bringt das Stricken voran.

Als ich vor Ostern (oh, so lange ist das schon wieder her?) meine Mutter besucht habe, hatte ich Dank zweier Bahnfahrten quer durch Deutschland viel Zeit zum Stricken.

So wurde nicht nur meine Stola fertig, sondern ich habe auf der Rückfahrt den Pulli aus Männermaschen angefangen. Angeschlagen habe ich die Maschen noch vor dem Start und auch zwei Reihen Bündchen gestrickt, aber der Rest war dann wirklich nur eine Bahnfahrt. (Bis Frankfurt, ab da gab es keine Sitzplätze und im Stehen strickt es sich dann doch nicht so gut.)

When I visited my mother before Easter (oops, that long ago?) I had to travel across Germany and as I was going by train I had a lot of time to knit.

So I did not only finish my stole, I also started the men's sweater from "Männermaschen". What you see on the pic is one train journey (until Franfurt, then I had to change the train and all seats were already taken. And knitting standing in an overfull train is not so much fun.) minus casting on and knitting the first two rows of the cuffs. That I had already started before leaving my mother.

Testing helps

Ich habe ja den Titelpulli aus "Männermaschen" vor ("Zopfrautenpullover für jeden Tag") und damit ich nach dem Ende meiner Lace-Stola gleich losstricken kann, habe ich schon mal Probeläppchen gestrickt.

My next knitting plan is the sweater from the cover of "Männermaschen" (called "Zopfrautenpullover für jeden Tag") and as I want to start immediately after finishing my lace scarf, I already did swatches.

Zuerst mal mit Nadelstärke 4, wie es in der Anleitung steht. Dabei fiel mir dann auch der erste Fehler in der Anleitung auf... Beschrieben ist "Um 3 M nach rechts zu verkreuzen, 2 M auf die Hilfsnd nehmen und hinter die Arbeit legen. Die folgende M links str., dann die 2 M auf der Hilfsnd rechts str." Wenn man das tut, wären die rechten Maschen hinten und nicht mehr sichtbar. Korrekt muß es heißen "Um 3 M nach rechts zu verkreuzen, 1 M auf die Hilfsnd nehmen und hinter die Arbeit legen. Die folgenden 2 M rechts str., dann die M auf der Hilfsnd links str." Und schon sieht das Muster aus, wie auf den Photos in der Anleitung.

Da ich eher locker stricke, war es nicht so überraschend, daß meine Maschenprobe mit Nadelstärke 4 nicht so ganz funktionierte. Die Anleitung fordert 22 M x 32 R für ein 10 cm x 10 cm Quadrat. Meine Maschenprobe hatte 21 M x 31 R. Fast, aber nicht ganz. Liane gab mir dann allerdings noch den heißen Tip, die Maschenprobe mal zu waschen, denn Merino würde sich da doch deutlich verändern. Hmtja... richtig, hatte ich auch schon mal davon gehört. Echt lange her, daß ich "richtig" gestrickt habe... Danach paßte die Maschenprobe wenigstens gar nicht mehr, 20 M x 30 R kam raus.

The instruction suggest needles size 4 so I tried that for my first swatch. And I found a mistake in the description of the pattern... . But the pics in the book are very clear, so I could easily correct the mistake.

As I know that I tend to loose knitting I was not surprised to find, that my swatch had not exactly the required size. 22 stitches x 32 rows are supposed to make a 10 cm x 10 cm square. Mine was 21 stitches x 31 rows, so nearly correct. Only Liane gave me the valuable hint to wash my swatch because merino can change a lot. (Yes, I vaguely remembered that. It's really a long time since I did serious knitting...) And indeed 20 stitches x 30 rows was definitely wrong.

Also das ganze noch mal mit Nadel 3,5. (Auf dem Bild die rechte Maschenprobe.) Jetzt sind es 23 M auf 30 R. (Den Effekt hatte ich übrigens schon öfter, meine Maschenproben verändern sich zwar in der Breite, aber kaum oder nicht in der Höhe....) Die fester gestrickte Maschenprobe verändert sich auch nach dem Waschen nicht sehr. Jetzt sind es knapp 23 M und 31 R in der Höhe. Wobei sich die Maschenprobe aber genauso gut auf 22 M Breite glattstreichen läßt. Und ein Pullover dehnt sich immer etwas durch das Eigengewicht, von daher werde ich ihn mit 3,5er Nadeln stricken (und die Bündchen mit 3er Nadeln).

Daß sich die festere Maschenprobe durch das Waschen nur wenig verändert hat noch einen Vorteil: Ich kann die Einzelteile vor dem zusammennähen Waschen und in sauber in Form legen, muß aber den Pulli nicht noch mal waschen, nachdem ich den Kragen angenäht habe... (Und gut, daß ein ein Zusatzknäuel geschenkt bekommen habe, die Probeläppchen waren wohl etwa ein halbes Knäuel.)

So picking needles size 3,5 and next swatch (the right one on the pic above). Now I have 23 stitches x 30 rows. (That is something that often happens to me, my swatch changes in width, but not in length...) This swatch changes less after washing. The result is a scant 23 stitches and 31 rows. And I can easily smooth it to the desired stitch and row count. And a sweater always changes a bit because of its own weight when its worn. So size 3,5 will be my needles (And 3,0 for the cuffs.)

The firmer knit swatch changes evidently less and that has another advantage: I can wash the pieces and shape them well before sewing the sweater, but I don't have to wash the sweater again after doing the knit on collar.... (All that swatching took about half a skein of wool, really good I got one extra.)

Finally wool!

Meine derzeitige Stola ist ja beim letzten Rapport angelangt, also wird es Zeit, an das nächste Projekt zu denken, der Titelpulli aus Michael Weinreichs "Männermaschen" soll es werden. Daß Schachenmayr Extra Merino offensichtlich keine Standardqualität ist hatte ich ja schon gemerkt. Wir haben ja nur etliche Wollgeschäfte hier, aber entweder die haben gar kein Schachenmayr, oder sie haben diese Qualität nicht oder nur in rosa und schwarz. Mein französischer Freund wollte aber blau.

Doch Daniela in der Maschenkunst in Köln konnte mir das Garn bestellen. Und diese Woche hatte ich endlich Zeit, es auch abzuholen. Und nicht nur das... ich wollte 19 Knäuel und das zwanzigste bekam ich obendrein geschenkt! Danke, sage ich!

(Jetzt kann ich auch sicher sein, daß das Garn für zwei oder drei Maschenproben reicht, denn die Stola hat mir gezeigt, daß ich unterschiedliche Garne offensichtlich unterschiedlich fest verstricke. Und die Knit-Pro Nadeln gibt es ja nicht nur in halben, sondern auch in viertel Schritten...)

My current shawl is in the last pattern repeat on the needles, so it's about time to think about the next project, the sweater from the cover of Michael Weinreichs "Männermaschen" will be next on my needles. I had thought "Extra Merino" from Schachenmayr to be quite a standard quality, available nearly anywhere. I had already found out that this is not the case: Cologne has several yarn shops, but either they don't carry the brand at all or they don't have the quality or they only have it only in pink and black. But my french friend who will wear the sweater in the end, wants blue.

But Daniela from Maschenkunst in Cologne could order it for me. And now it finally arrived and this week I had time to fetch it in the shop. And not only that, I had ordered 19 skeins and got number 20 for free! Thank you!

(Now I can be sure that I will have enough yarn for swatching. My shawl experience showed me, that I seem to knit firmer or looserm according to the yarn quality. And Knit-Pro needles are not only in half-sizes available but in quarter-sizes....)

MüMu-scarf, the pattern

Passend zur erneuten Schnee und Kältewelle und wie ich es versprochen hatte kommt hier die Anleitung für den Schal für den ich das schöne Buch gewonnen habe.

Da der Schal gleichzeitig eine Mütze und einen Muff ersetzt, habe ich ihn "MüMu-Schal" genannt.

Und er ist ganz einfach zu stricken.

Material: ca 3 Knäuel (150g) Schachenmayr nomotta "Kid Light", eine kurze (40cm) Rundstricknadel Nr. 5, ein Nadelspiel Stärke 3,5.

Der Schal sollte locker gestrickt sein, weil er sonst zu steif und dick wird. Ich stricke eher locker, ein durchschnittlicher Stricker kann wohl eher eine halbe Nadelstärke weniger nehmen. Am besten macht man eine kleine Maschenprobe...

I had promised to post the pattern for the scarf I won the book with. So here it is. As tha scarf replaces bonnet ("Mütze" in German) and muff I called it "MüMu-Scarf".

It's easy.

Materials: about 3 balls of Schachenmayr nomotta "Kid Light", a short (40cm) no. 5 circular knitting needle, 1 set of double point needles no. 3.5 (both cases european sizing)

The scarf should be knit rather loosly, elseway it might get to stiff. I'm normally knitting quite loosely, so the average knitter might use needles half a size smaller. Best you knit a swatch and check.

Wie das Bild zeigt ist der Schal einfach eine Röhre mit einer Öffnung an der einen Seite und einer doppelten Öffnung an der anderen Seite.

116M mit Nadel 3,5 anschlagen, auf das Nadelspiel verteilen, zur Runde schließen und im Rippenmuster 2re/2li 15 Runden stricken.

Danach auf die Rundnadel Stärke 5 wechseln und in Runden weiterstricken. Immer 9 Runden rechts, eine Runde links (Grundmuster).

Nach 33 Rapporten (oder 330 Runden) im Grundmuster werden die letzten 58 Maschen stillgelegt. Die ersten 58 Maschen stricken, 10M am Anschluss daran neu anschlagen und mit der ersten Masche wieder zur Runde schließen. Weitere 2 Rapporte Grundmuster stricken.

Eine Runde rechts stricken, dabei 12x jede 5. Masche abnehmen (=56 M). Auf Nadelspiel 3,5 wechseln, 15 Runden im Rippenmuster (2re, 2li) stricken und locker abketten.

Für die 2. Handöffnung 10M aus der unteren Kante der 10 neu aufgenommenen Maschen herausstricken, dann die 58 stillgelegten Maschen abstricken. Weiter in der Runde stricken, 2 Rapporte des Grundnmusters. Eine Runde rechts stricken, dabei 12x jede 5. Masche abnehmen (=56 M). Auf Nadelspiel 3,5 wechseln, 15 Runden im Rippenmuster (2re, 2li) stricken und locker abketten.

Fäden vernähen, fertig.

As the pic above shows is the scarf a tube, one opening ant one end, a double opening on the other end.

Cast on 116 stitches with needles 3.5, close to the round and knit ribs (k2, p2), After 15 rounds change to circular needle no 5 and knit the basic patter: [9 rounds knit, 1 round purl].

After 33 repeats of the basic pattern put the last 58 stitches on waste yarn or a spare needle. Knit the first 58 stitches, cast on 10 stitches directly after the 58 stitches and knit on in rounds. Make two repeats of the basic pattern. Then knit one round, decreasing 12x every 5th stitch (= 56 stitches). Change to needles 3.5, knit ribs for 15 rounds, bind off loosely.

Then pick up 10 stitches from the newly cast on stitches, knit the 58 stitches from the waste yarn and continue with the basic pattern in rounds for 2 repeats (20 rows). Then knit one round, decreasing 12x every 5th stitch (= 56 stitches). Change to needles 3.5, knit ribs for 15 rounds, bind off loosely.

Weave in loose ends, finish!

Die letzten Bilder zeigen die beiden Tragevarianen. Entweder ein ganz normaler Schal.

Wenn einem dann an den Ohren kalt wird, dann steckt man den Kopf in die große Öffnung, drapiert den Schal locker hinter den Kopf, so wie man mag, legt ihn einmal um den Hals und läßt ihn über die Brust nach vorne hängen. Und dann kann man die Hände in die beiden kleinen Öffnungen stecken.

Wichtig ist, daß der Schal lang genug ist, da'man die Hände gut reinstecken kann, ohne sich selber zu würgen. Wer klein ist, braucht ein paar Zentimeter aus, wer einen langen Oberkörper hat braucht ein paar mehr.

The last pictures show the two possibilities to wear the scarf. Of course you can just put it around your neck, like any other scarf.

And when your ears get cold, then you put the big opening over your head, drape the scarf loosely behind your head (as you like it), run it once around your neck and let the rest hang on your front. When your hands get cold also, put them in the small openings.

It is important to make the scarf long enough. If it's to short you strangle yourself when you put your hands in. So if you are short, your scarf can be shorter, if you are long better add one or two repeats of the basic pattern.

So, jetzt bin ich mal gespannt, ob jemand Lust hat, auch so einen Schal zu stricken. Die Rechte für den Schal und das Muster liegen bei mir, nachstricken zum persönlichen Gebrauch ist erlaubt und erwünscht. Ich freue mich, wenn ihr mir einen Link auf Bilder von eueren Variationen schickt. Man könnte den Schal ja auch mehrfarbig machen... Wenn er winddichter werden soll, dann die Nadeln vielleicht etwas kleiner oder etwas dickeres Garn? Die Anleitung darf nicht kopiert und weitergegeben werden, bitte gibt einen Link auf dieses Post weiter. Danke!

I did win, too!

Und nicht nur gelost, sondern so richtig mit Jury und ausgewählt, ist das nicht cool!?! Und das mir... die ich in der Schule in Handarbeit die schlechteste war und gerade mal einen halben Meter Schal schaffte, wo andere zwei lange strickten... Ich gewinne einen Preis bei einem Schalwettbewerb! (Gut, der zehnte Platz, aber trotzdem...) Ich finde es immer noch nur cool!!

And not just the kind of "we draw a winner", no, a real price, chosen by a jury and that, ain't that cool!?! I still can hardly get it, me, who was the worst pupil in knitting and needlecraft at school. Tho one whose scarf would hardly make 50cm while others did two long ones in the same time... I was judged to become a prize for a scarf! (Okay, as number ten, but still...) I can only find that so cool!!

Aber vielleicht sollte ich vorne anfangen... beim OZ Verlag wurde vor einiger Zeit ein Wettbewerb für den kreativsten Schal ausgerufen und da ich noch einiges an Strickgarn rumliegen hatte, habe ich mich auch beteiligt. Mit einem Schal der gleichzeitig als Mütze und Handwärmer dienen kann.

Wirkliche Chancen auf einen Preis hatte ich mir nicht ausgerechnet, aber ich hatte einfach Lust, die Idee umzusetzen und habe mein Photo eingeschickt. Als ich dann die anderen tollen Einsendungen gesehen hatte, war ich mir sicher, daß ich nicht dabei sein würde.

But maybe I should tell the whole story from the beginning... quite a while ago the OZ Verlag (they edit craft books) started a competition for the most creative scarf. Well, I had yarn, an idea jumped through my brain... and I did something. A scarf that includes bonnet and hand warmers.

I had not seriously thought about winning, but as I wanted to try my idea anyhow and the scarf was finished in time I sent in my photo. After having seen what the other had done I was sure mine was far out of the real competition.

Um so überraschter war ich, als ich dann eine Mail vom Verlag bekam, mit der Aufforderung, mir ein Buch aus dem Verlagsprogramm auszusuchen. Das war dann echt harte Arbeit... ein Buch, von so vielen. Mir war gar nicht bewußt, daß OZ-Verlag inzwischen so viele Handarbeitsbücher hat. Ich kannte die ja eher als Bastelverlag und das ist nicht so ganz meine Welt. Nach ganz viel hin und her habe ich mich letztlich für ein Strickbuch von Kaffee Fasset entschieden. Eigentlich mehr als Augenfutter, aber ich habe schon große Lust bekommen, einiges davon nachzustricken... Wann auch immer das sein soll...

So I was really surprised when I recived an email that I was among the winners and had the right to choose a book from them. That was real work... I hadn't realized how many sewing, knitting and crocheting books OZ-Verlag has. I only knew them for more non textile crafty stuff which interests me far less. Finally I decided for a knitting book of Kaffee Fasset. More intended to be a coffee table book, but since I have it here I feel the itch to knit more than one of the items. Whenever that may happen...

(Und weil mich schon jemand gefragt hat: Die Anleitung für den Schal gibt es denn demnächst auch hier im Blog, ist ganz einfach.)
